Chapter 18 David’s son-in-law

  1. Saul, whose vessel was small

David who defeated Goliath became a hero. The life of a young man who was just a shepherd will be transformed into the limelight. Moreover, the Israeli women whispered, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” It was a natural situation for David’s victory. However, Saul rages, “They have credited David with tens of thousands, but me with only thousands.” The only thing he doesn’t have is the throne.” Saul realized that he was no longer popular. And when David, a person who gains more trust and recognition than him, appears, Saul becomes a mass of suspicion and jealousy, and eventually he is even captured by murderous intent.

I think the small Saul is not unrelated to us, to varying degrees. Once self-esteem is hurt and anger burns up, or jealousy grows, people take actions that cannot be dealt with. People have weaknesses that they cannot honestly admit and accept their faults, mistakes, and what has happened. People will think that they are not really themselves, they are more worthy of evaluation. People can’t accept it because of their broken heart, even if they have a slight feeling of what they really are. Whether or not he can look deep into his heart, underwater, and take what he really is related to his personal maturity.

  1. Saul’s solution

Again, Saul needed David’s kin. David is called as a kin player , not a hero. However, David has been struck by Saul’s murderous intentions twice. Saul tried to pierce the wall with a spear, aiming for killing chance. Instead of having his daughter as his wife, he sought to quarrel with the Philistines and, hopefully, bury him. However, all attempts by Saul to dismiss David were counterproductive.

That is because the Lord was with David, not with Saul. Saul was afraid of David, and he had no choice but to continue to be David’s enemy. But, like Cain, who was jealous of Abel, “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it” (Genesis 4:7). He should have remembered the word of God. Saul was receiving the Holy Spirit of God. He was once counted as one of the prophets. However, he was not a person who had a connection with the Lord. In other words, it wasn’t that God wasn’t with Saul, but that he didn’t want Him to be with Him. That is also an important point for us. Because, as John says, God’s love was clearly shown on the cross, and God is with anyone who calls the name of the Lord. Those who call the name of the Lord should expect the blessing of the Lord. Even if he feels weak, suffers from inferiority complex, and is almost overwhelmed by jealousy towards others. That does not mean that the Lord will abandon him. Rather, even at such times, you should decide not to leave the Lord who has shown the love of the cross. If you believe that you are forsaken by God, you can never start a new happy life.

Keep the conviction that “God makes us happy. He will not be rejected by his loved ones.” And you are willing to forget the bad things of the past. Stop the habit of thinking boring things forever. It’s about spending time nurturing new heart habits, forgiveness and love heart habits that are always in Christ. And you aim to be nourished by God until such a habit that is difficult to acquire becomes a habit of your heart. For that purpose, we attend church meetings, worship services, and prayer meetings. There is also a Bible reading that touches God’s heart, spending good times with God. I pray that today will be a good day.

<Quiz corner>

First, yesterday’s quiz. Which tribe had 700 stone-throwing masters who could throw stones at a single hair and never fail? The answer was the Tribe of Benjamin (Judges 20:16). So, today’s Bible quiz. What is the “foreskins” that Saul asked David for instead of bridal fees? The answer is tomorrow, and I pray that today will be a good day.
