22章　アハブの死

1．アラムとの戦争

イスラエルの王アハブがアラムに戦争をけしかけた、と言います。これが一般史のいつ頃に相当する出来事であったのかはわかっていません。ただ、この戦争は、イスラエルとアラムが結んだ協定、つまり、イスラエルとアラムの国境の町ラモテ・ギルアデを返還するものが守られなかったために起こったものでした（20:34）。

そこでアハブは戦勝を帰して、預言者たちの助言を求めるのです。約400人の預言者が集められ、彼らはアハブに勝利を予告しました。しかし、共に戦うように要請されたユダの王ヨシャパテは、その答えに満足できないものがあったようです。そこで彼は、預言者ミカヤに助言を求めます。ただミカヤは、アハブから嫌われていました。というのも、いつも自分の意に反することを語るからです。実際ミカヤの預言は、四百人の預言者を偽預言者とし、アハブの死と軍隊の壊滅を語り、警告するものでした。

アハブに遣わされた使者たちは、ミカヤにその預言を訂正するように求めましたが、ミカヤは、自分の命を懸けて、神のことばを語るのです。人というのは、自分の耳に良いことを語る人のことばに耳を傾けやすい者でしょう。それは人の心の弱さです。しかし、大切なのは、愛をもって真実を語ってくれる人を見極め、聞いていくことです。

2．アハブの誤算

アハブは、ミカヤが警告したにもかかわらず、「変装」をして戦いに出ました。幾つかのギリシャ語写本では、目立たないようにして戦争に出たことが示唆されています。しかし、アハブに対するミカヤの預言は、全く考えもしないような事態で実現しました。一人の兵士が何げなく宙に放った弓が、アハブの鎧の隙間に命中し、胸を射抜いてしまうのです（34節）。その傷は深かく、致命傷となりました。かつて、気まぐれにナボテの命を弄んだアハブは、気まぐれな兵士の矢でいのちを落としていくのです。

注目すべきでしょう。人の勝利や失敗、あるいはいのちや死は、人の計画どおりに進むものではない、ということです。人は健康に気遣い、危険を避け、少しでも長生きすることを願います。しかし、そんな努力が全く無駄になるようなことはよくあるものでしょう。人は自分の人生を全くコントロールできない者です。私たちのいのちも人生も、皆神の御手の中にあるのです。私たちが何を望もうとも、神が私たちの味方にならない限り、私たちに本当の勝利はありません。結局、神を畏れ、神の命令を守ることが人間にとってすべてなのです。

2．人生において悟る

その後、ヨシャパテは主の目にかなう歩みをしたと列王記の著者は語ります。アハブの子アハズヤが、協同の貿易を申し出ましたがそれも断っています。アハブの出来事に悟ることがあり、その不釣り合いな交友を避けたのでしょう。

本来ヨシャパテは、戦う必要のない戦争に巻き込まれました。それはイスラエルの王アハブの娘と結婚したためです。釣り合わぬくびき（unequal yoke)を負うこと自体が、私たちに災いをもたらすことがあります。しかし多くの場合、私たちは物事の結末をよく考えずに、安易に人生の選択を行っているものです。けれども人が自分の人生を左右することも、それを見通すこともできないというのなら、やはり人生を支配し、守り助けられる神を恐れ、神のことばに聞き従いましょう。そして神の命令を守る者たちとのつながりを大事にしましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 22 Death of Ahab

1. War with Aram

It is said that Ahab, the king of Israel, started a war on Aram. It is not known when this was an event in general history. However, the war was caused by the failure to uphold the agreement between Israel and Aram, that is, the return of Ramoth-Gilead, the border town of Israel and Aram (20:34).

So Ahab returns to victory and seeks the advice of the Prophets. About 400 prophets were gathered and they foretold Ahab the victory. However, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, who was asked to fight together, seemed unsatisfied with the answer. So he seeks advice from the Prophet Mikaya. However, Mikaya was hated by Ahab. Because he always talks about things that are against his will. In fact, Mikaya’s prophecy made 400 prophets false prophets, telling and warning of the death of Ahab and the destruction of the army.

The messengers sent to Ahab asked Mikaya to correct his prophecy, but Mikaya risked his life and spoke the word of God. A person is one who is easy to listen to the words of those who say something good to their ears. It is the weakness of the human heart. But the important thing is to identify and listen to those who tell the truth with love.

2. Ahab miscalculation

Ahab went into battle in “disguise” despite Mikaya’s warning. Some Greek manuscripts suggest that he went into war unobtrusively. However, Mikaya’s prophecy for Ahab came true in a completely unthinkable situation. A bow that a soldier casually　 shoots into the air hits a gap in Ahab’s armor and shoots through his chest (verse 34). The wound was deep and fatal. Ahab, who once tampered with Nabote’s life on a whim, drops his life with the arrow of a whimsical soldier.

It should be noted. A person’s victory or failure, or life or death, does not go according to one’s plan. We hope that people care about their health, avoid dangers, and live as long as possible. However, it is often the case that such efforts are completely wasted. A person has no control over his or her life. All of our lives are in the hands of God. No matter what we want, we have no real victory unless God is on our side. After all, it is all for humans to fear God and keep God’s command.

3. Enlightenment in life

After that, Jehoshaphat took steps in the eyes of his Lord, says the author of Kings. Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, offered to trade in cooperation, but refused to do so. Perhaps he was aware of what happened in Ahab and avoided that disproportionate companionship.

Originally, Jehoshaphat was involved in a war that did not need to be fought. It was because he married the daughter of King Ahab of Israel. Taking on an unequal yoke can itself be disastrous for us. But in many cases, we make life choices easily without thinking about the consequences of things. But if one cannot influence or see through one’s life, then fear the God who will rule, protect and help him, and listen to His Word. And cherish the connection with those who keep God’s command.
