1．はじめに：なぜ今、サムエルの物語を読むのか？
現代は、情報があふれる時代です。スマートフォンやテレビ、SNSなどを通じて、毎日たくさんの「声」が私たちに届きます。しかし、その中から本当に大切な声を聞き分けるのは、決して簡単ではありません。
だからこそ、聖書に登場する少年サムエルの物語は、今の私たちに大切なことを教えてくれます。神さまの静かな呼びかけに気づき、それに耳を傾ける姿勢、それこそが、現代を生きる私たちにも必要なのです。
2．サムエルとエリ：神殿での生活
サムエルは、まだ3歳くらいの小さな子どものころに神殿に預けられました。母親は毎年、手作りの上着を持ってきて、祈りによってサムエルを支えていました。サムエルは祭司エリのもとで育ち、神さまに仕える生活を送っていたのです。
3．神殿のようすとサムエルの役割
サムエルがいた「シロの神殿」は、後のエルサレム神殿のような、聖所と至聖所の二つの部屋があるものではなく、一つの部屋でできていたと考えられています。神さまの箱（契約の箱）は、西側の壁のくぼみ（「壁龕（へきがん）」）に置かれていました。サムエルはその近くで寝ており、エリは別の部屋で休んでいたようです。
サムエルには、神殿の灯りを守るという大切な役目がありました。そのため、神さまの声を聞いたとき、エリの声と間違えてしまったのです。
ここで大切なのは、「神さまの近くにいること」が、神の声を聞くための第一歩だということです。
4．神さまの呼びかけとサムエルの応答
その時代、神さまの言葉や幻はほとんど現れていませんでした。そんな中、神さまは少年サムエルに語りかけます。
サムエルは最初、エリが呼んだのだと思い、何度もエリのもとへ走っていきます。しかし、エリは「それは神さまかもしれない。今度呼ばれたら、『主よ、お話しください。しもべは聞いております』と答えなさい」と教えました。サムエルは、エリの言葉どおりにします。
この言葉には、「ただ聞くだけでなく、従います」という心が込められています。そのようなサムエルに、神さまはそばに立ち、直接語りかけたと聖書に書かれています。
私たちは、神さまの声を直接聞くことはないかもしれません。しかし、聖書を通して、神さまは今も語っておられると信じています。大切なのは、心を開いて神さまの言葉に耳を傾けることです。聖書を開き、神さまの語りかけがあると信じて読む姿勢が大切です。
5．神のことばの内容と意味
神さまがサムエルに語ったのは、エリの家に対する厳しい裁きについてでした。これは初めての警告ではなく、すでに別の「神の人」が同じことを伝えていました。
神さまは、「エリの家の罪は、どんなささげ物でも償うことはできない」と言われました。これはとても重い言葉です。
私たちは、聖書の中でも、耳にやさしい言葉だけを選んで読んでしまいがちです。しかし、神さまの言葉は恵みと愛に満ちていますが、時には私たちに悔い改めを求める厳しさもあります。サムエルは、この厳しいメッセージを恐れながらも、エリに正直に伝えました。ここに、神の言葉に応答するサムエルの責任感と勇気が表れています。
6．現代の私たちへのメッセージ
今の私たちは、神さまの声を直接聞くことはないかもしれません。しかし、聖書を通して、神さまは今も語っておられます。大切なのは、自分にとって都合のよい言葉だけでなく、耳が痛い言葉にも心を開くことです。職場での判断、家庭での関係、社会での行動──どんな場面でも、神さまの導きを求める姿勢が必要です。
今日も、「主よ、お話しください。しもべは聞いております」と祈りながら、神さまの言葉に応答する一日を歩んでいきましょう。それでは、また明日。
Chapter 3: “Speak, Lord, for Your Servant Is Listening”
1. Introduction: Why Should We Read the Story of Samuel Today?
Today, we live in a world full of information. Every day, we hear many “voices” from smartphones, TV, and social media. But it is not easy to know which voice is truly important.
That is why the story of young Samuel in the Bible is helpful for us. Samuel teaches us how to notice God’s quiet voice and listen carefully. This attitude is very important for people living in today’s busy world.
2. Samuel and Eli: Life in the Temple
Samuel was only about three years old when he was brought to the temple. His mother visited him every year and gave him a handmade robe. She also prayed for him. Samuel grew up under the care of the priest Eli and lived a life of serving God.
3. The Temple and Samuel’s Role
The temple in Shiloh, where Samuel lived, was simple. It was not like the later temple in Jerusalem, which had two rooms. This temple had only one room. The Ark of God (the holy box) was placed in a small space in the west wall.
Samuel slept near the Ark, and Eli slept in another room. Samuel had an important job: he kept the lamp of God burning. One night, when God called Samuel, he thought it was Eli’s voice.
This shows us something important: being close to God helps us hear His voice.
4. God’s Call and Samuel’s Answer
At that time, God’s words and visions were very rare. But God spoke to young Samuel.
Samuel thought Eli was calling him, so he ran to him. This happened three times. Then Eli said, “Maybe it is God. Next time, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’”
Samuel did what Eli told him. This answer means, “I am ready to listen and obey.” The Bible says that God came and stood near Samuel and spoke to him.
Today, we may not hear God’s voice directly. But we believe that God still speaks to us through the Bible. So, we should open our hearts and listen carefully when we read it.
5. The Message from God and Its Meaning
God told Samuel a very serious message. It was about judgment on Eli’s family. This was not the first warning. Another “man of God” had already said the same thing.
God said, “The sin of Eli’s family cannot be forgiven by any offering.” These are very strong words.
Sometimes, we only want to read the easy and kind words in the Bible. But God’s words are not only about love and comfort. Sometimes, they ask us to change our hearts.
Samuel was afraid, but he told Eli the truth. This shows Samuel’s courage and responsibility. When God speaks to us, we should also be ready to share His message with others.
6. A Message for Us Today
We may not hear God’s voice with our ears. But God still speaks to us through the Bible.
It is important to listen not only to the words we like, but also to the words that are hard to hear. In our work, family, and daily life, we need to listen to God’s guidance.
So today, let us pray like Samuel:
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
