1．終わりの日の困難（3:1-9）
「終わりの日」は、イエスの地上の生涯の時から（ヘブル1:1-2）、イエスが再臨される時までのことを言います。それが「終わりの日」と呼ばれるのは、神の目的が完成される時だからです。
しかしもはや2000年も経ってしまいました。確かに、地球は、終わりに向かう危機に瀕しているような気もしますが、イエスが再臨されるというのは、どんなものか、と思う方々も多いでしょう（2ペテロ3:3）。しかし、それはイエスの時代から現代に至るまで、キリスト教会では信仰を持って受け止められているものです。
そこでパウロは、言います。その日が近づけば近づくほど時代は難しくなるだろう、と。というのも、どんどん人は自己中心になり、金銭や快楽を愛し、的外れな人生を歩むようになる、つまり罪の闇も深まると言います。そして、パウロは、見かけだけ敬虔そうに生きている人に注意しなさい、と言います。人は、表面的な付き合いではわからないものです。しかし、良く見極めて付き合っていく必要があるのも人です。何が怖いかと言えば、人間が一番怖い、ということはあるものです。
パウロは、具体的に、ヤンネとヤンブレという人物を取り上げます。彼らは、モーセがエジプトからヘブル人を脱出させようとした時に、パロの宮廷にいて敵対した二人の魔術師でした（出エジプト7:11）。つまり注意すべき人物の象徴的な特徴を表すことばなのでしょうが、その本質は、8節、真理に逆らっている人々です。ただ、そのような人は放っておけばよいのでしょう。いずれ誰の目にも、彼らの問題は明らかになります（9節）。
2．聖書に留まれ（3:10-17）
大切なのは、14節、「けれどもあなたは、学んで確信したところに留まっていなさい」と言うことです。彼らはどうでもいいが、あなたは、聖書の教えにしっかりと立ちなさい、と。そして聖書の効用を語ります。聖書は「教え」と「戒め」と「矯正」と「義の訓練」のために有益である、と。「教え」というのは、何が正しいか、「戒め」は何が間違っているか、「矯正」はどのように正しくなれるか、「義の訓練」はどのように正しくあり続けられるかを言っています。つまり、聖書は、私たちに、正しいこと間違っていることを教えるのみならず、どのように自分を正し、正しくあり続けられるかを教えてくれるのです。そのような聖書にしっかり取り組む人は、神の人として整えられることに間違いはありません。
ただ問題は、実際にそのように聖書に親しんでいる人は少ないことです。聖書の耳当たりのよい言葉だけを拾うように読んでいく人、斜め読みするだけの人、知的に研究するだけの人はいくらでもいますが、聖書の言葉に照らして、自分を吟味し、敬虔さを形作るように読んでいく人など、少ないものです。けれども、パウロは、テモテが、自分の「教え、生き方、計画、信仰、寛容、愛、忍耐に…よくついて来てくれた」と、彼がその数少ない一人であることを認めています。
キリスト教会に来て何がよかったか、と言えば、お友達ができた、自分の居場所が出来た、聖書がわかるようになった、ということもあるかもしれません。しかし、私は、やはりイエスとの出会いであろうと思います。人間の屑とも言うべきこのような罪人の私をも愛してくださるイエス。そして人間として誠実な歩みを励ますイエスに出会ったことです。また、そのイエスが再臨されると言う信仰を共有し、人間としての成長を志し生きる人々に加えられた、ということのように思います。

Second Epistle of Timothy, Chapter 3: Remaining in the Scriptures
1. The Difficulties of the Last Days (3:1-9)
The “last days” are from the time of Jesus’ earthly life (Hebrews 1:1-2) to the time of His return. It is called the “last days” because that is when God’s purpose will be accomplished.
But no longer, it has been 2000 years. In fact, the earth seems to be coming to an end, and many people wonder what the second coming of Jesus will be like (2 Peter 3:3). But it is something that has been received with faith in the Christian Church from the time of Jesus to the present day.
This is what Paul says. The closer we get to that day, the more difficult the times will be, he says. He says that the closer we get to that day, the more difficult the times will be, because people will become more and more self-centered, more and more lovers of money and pleasure, and more and more misguided in their lives, which means that the darkness of sin will also deepen. Paul then says to beware of those who seem to live a pious life. You can’t tell people by their superficial associations. But they are also people who need to be carefully discerned and dealt with. Sometimes people are the most frightening of all.
Paul specifically mentions Janneh and Jambres. They were two magicians in Pharaoh’s court who opposed Moses when he tried to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt (Ex 7:11). In other words, the word may be a symbolic characterization of a person to watch out for, but in its essence, verse 8, it is people who are against the truth. However, such people should be left alone. Eventually, their problems will become apparent to everyone (v.9).
2. Abide in the Bible (3:10-17)
The important thing is verse 14: “But you will abide in what you have learned and are convinced of. They don’t matter, but you, he says, stand firm in the teachings of the Bible. Then he talks about the usefulness of the Bible. The Bible is useful for “teaching,” “reproof,” “correction,” and “training in righteousness. By “teaching,” he means what is right; by “reproof,” what is wrong; by “correction,” how to be right; and by “training in righteousness,” how to stay right. In other words, the Bible tells us not only what is right and wrong, but also how to correct ourselves and remain righteous. There is no doubt that a person who is committed to such a Bible will be prepared as a man of God.
The problem, however, is that few people actually engage with the Bible in this way. There are many people who read the Bible as if they were just picking up the most relevant words, or who read the Bible obliquely, or who study it intellectually, but there are few who examine themselves in the light of the words of the Bible and read it in such a way that it shapes their godliness. Yet Paul acknowledges that Timothy is one of those few, saying that he was one of the few who followed his “teaching, his way of life, his plans, his faith, his forbearance, his love, and his patience…well.
If I had to say what was good about coming to Christ Church, I might say that I made friends, I found a place where I belonged, and I came to understand the Bible. But I think it was meeting Jesus. Jesus loves me, a sinner, a scrappy human being, and encourages me to walk in integrity as a human being. I think it means that I have been added to a group of people who share the belief that Jesus will return and who are striving to grow as human beings.
