ヤコブの手紙3章 舌を制御する
1．舌に注意せよ（3:1-12）
教師になりたいと思う人は多いものでしょう。というのも人は、基本的に教えたがりです。そのような人間の本質的な問題はよく理解しておくべきでしょう。もちろん、教師を目指すことは大切な志です。しかし、キリスト教の教師は、神についての自分の考えを述べるわけではありません。パウロがテサロニケ人への手紙第一、2章で語っていたように、神の真理を真っすぐに伝える者です。ですから外れたことを教えるのなら、「より厳しい裁きを受ける」とヤコブは言うのです。教えるという祝福の立場にあることよりも、その深い責任をよく理解しなくてはならないのでしょう。
特に意識すべきことは、舌、つまりことばです。普段人は、何気に変なことを言っているものです。しかし、普通は、あまり気にも留めず聞き流しているのです。ところが何か問題が起こると、色々と思い起こして、言っていたことばを批判されるようになります。そしてその批判は山火事のように、留まることを知らない勢いで広まるものです。大切なのは、普段から、思慮深く語ることなのでしょう。
人間はあらゆる動物を飼い慣らしてきながら、舌だけは制御できていないとも言います（8節）。舌は矛盾し、神を賛美もし、人を呪いもします。舌は人を慰め、役立つこともありますが、常にではありません。もちろんヤコブは、沈黙は金なりと言いたいわけではありません。大切なのは、リンゴの木はリンゴの実だけをならせるのに、舌は相反する二つの実をならせることに注意することです。
2．舌を制御するコツ（3:13-18）
そもそもの問題は、どこにあるのか、それはイエスが言うように心でしょう（16節、マルコ7:20-23、マタイ15:18）。不平、自慢、嘘、偽り、といった心にあるものがことばとなるのです。どうして嘘偽りを語るのか。それは、心がごまかしに満ちているからです。ことばを制御するよりも、心を整える必要があるのです。いつも主と心通う時を持ち、主の誠実さや愛に満たされていくのなら、舌も制御されるでしょう。
そこで13節以降は、神と心を通わせること、神と時を過ごすことで、心を満たされ、その人間性が整えられるべきことを語るのです。
ヤコブがここで対比しているのは、上から来た知恵と、苦いねたみと敵対心です。キリストにあって救われた私たちは、絶えず天来のマナに養われる、つまり、上からの知恵に生きています。もはやバプテスマを受ける前の、古い肉の思いだけで生きているわけではありません。ここで言う知恵があるというのは、単に頭がよい、ということではありません。弁舌が巧みだということとも違います。むしろそれは清いもので、次に平和で、優しく、協調性があり、また、あわれみと良い実とに満ち、偏見がなく、偽善もない、と言います。ある意味で、クリスチャンの品性を形作る内容そのものです。絶えず、神に繋がり、上から、神に与えられる知恵に生きていく。それが信仰を持った者の新しい人生なのです。私たちの生活のどこかに、この上につながる十分な時がなければ、私たちは、相変わらずバプテスマを受ける前の、苦いねたみ、自慢、そして敵対心に生きる他ありません。それは、名ばかりのクリスチャン、成長のないクリスチャンです。クリスチャンになるというのは、何かの能力を身に付けた、という結果が出る以上に、神と時を過ごす、上から知恵を与えられる時を持つ、ということが何よりも大切なのです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。ではまた明日、このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
James 3 Controlling the tongue.
1. watch your tongue (3:1-12)
Many people want to be teachers. This is because people are basically eager to teach. Such a problem of human nature should be well understood. Of course, wanting to become a teacher is an important aspiration. However, a Christian teacher does not state his or her own ideas about God. As Paul said in 1 Thessalonians, chapter 2, he is a straightforward communicator of God’s truth. So if you teach out of line, James says, ‘you will be judged more severely’. We probably need to be well aware of our deeper responsibility than being in the blessed position of teaching.
What we should be particularly aware of is the tongue, or the word. People usually say strange things without thinking about it. However, we usually don’t pay much attention to them and don’t listen to them. However, when a problem arises, they recall a lot of things and criticise the words they said. And that criticism spreads like wildfire, with a momentum that knows no bounds. The important thing is probably to speak thoughtfully, on a regular basis.
It is said that man has tamed all animals, but has not been able to control his tongue (v. 8). The tongue contradicts, it both praises God and curses people. The tongue can comfort and help people, but not always. Of course, Jacob does not mean to say that silence is golden. It is important to note that the apple tree produces only apple fruit, but the tongue produces two opposing fruits.
2. the trick to controlling the tongue (3:13-18)
Where the problem lies in the first place, it will be the heart, as Jesus says (v. 16; Mark 7:20-23; Matt. 15:18). It is what is in the heart that becomes the word: complaining, boasting, lying, deceitfulness. Why do we tell lies and falsehoods? It is because the heart is full of deceit. Rather than controlling the words, the heart needs to be set in order. If we always have a heart-to-heart with the Lord and are filled with His sincerity and love, then we will be able to control our tongues.
So from verse 13 onwards, it talks about the need to have heart-to-heart contact with God, to spend time with Him, so that one’s heart can be filled and one’s human nature can be prepared.
What James is contrasting here is wisdom from above and bitter envy and hostility. We who are saved in Christ are continually nourished by the heavenly manna, i.e. we live in wisdom from above. We no longer live only in the old fleshly thoughts we had before we were baptised. Wisdom here does not simply mean being smart. It is not the same as being oratorically adept. Rather, we say that it is pure, then peaceful, gentle, co-operative and full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. In a sense, this is the very content that shapes Christian character. Constantly connected to God, from above, living in God-given wisdom. That is the new life of a person of faith. If there is not enough time to connect to this from above somewhere in our lives, we have no choice but to live in the same bitter envy, boasting and hostility as before our baptism. It is a Christian in name only, a Christian without growth. Becoming a Christian is more than the result of acquiring some ability, it is more important to spend time with God, to have time with Him, to be given wisdom from above. The Word of God is true.
