1．「始まる」ために「終わる」（21:1-15）
１節「以前の天と、以前の地は過ぎ去る」とあります。私たちは自分たちの未来について、あまり深く考えもせず、毎日を過ごしているのではないでしょうか。しかし地球温暖化、大気・海洋汚染、エネルギー資源の枯渇、核開発と戦争の危機、ナショナリズムの強化と民族紛争の拡大など、人間が生きる環境は深刻な状況にあります。この地球は、いつまで持ちこたえられるのだろうか、と疑問を感じている方々も多いことでしょう。
地球の未来をどう考えるか、考え方も様々です。ハリウッド映画によく見られるように、たとえ核戦争や大惑星の衝突が起こる事態になり、地球滅亡の危機にさらされても、人間は科学力と勇気でそれを乗り越えていく、と考えることも可能でしょう。あるいは、「悟ればこの世も極楽、悟らねばこの世も地獄」と、確実な今だけに集中する、マインドフルネス的に自分自身の中で解決する方法もあります。さらに、円環のように人の世は連続し、永遠に終わらないと輪廻転生に思いを巡らすことも可能でしょう。
聖書は、この世界は神によって造られた、その神が人間の歴史を終わらせる日が来ると語ります。ある意味で、ハリウッド的ですが、人間の科学力も勇気も役には立たず人類の滅亡は避けられないという終末史的な見方です。ただ、それだけではありません。この世が終わるのは、新しい始まりのためである、と次の世界があることを語るのです。最後の21と22章は、その新しい世界、新しいエルサレムの素晴らしさを語るものです。
2．新しい世界（21:16-27）
その世界は、今の世とは全く連続性のない新しい世界です。そこには、神がおられるのです（3）。預言者エゼキエルの幻でも、町の名は、「主はそこにおられる」（エゼキエル48:35）と語られていました。そしてその世界では4節、「もはや死はなく、悲しみも、叫びも、苦しみもない」と言います。人が死ねば、残された者には悲しみがあります。しかし新しい世界には、死がないので、死の悲しみもありません。そして、神が私たちの魂や心の傷を深く癒してくださり、過去はすべて過ぎ去ってしまうので、私たちは、トラウマに苦しめられることもないのです。
16節からは、その新しい世界の外観が詳しく語られます。そのサイズは、一万二千スタディオン。一スタディオンが185メートルです。計算すれば2220キロメートル。大ざっぱにアフリカ大陸の広さを底辺とした立方体です。ちょっと想像できない大都市です。しかし、これも黙示文学特有の表現で、文字通りに受け止めるものではありません。「非常に大きな都」と言う程度の意味です。
また城壁があります。これは、防御のためのものではありません。なぜならすべての敵は滅ぼされたからです。入れる人と入れない人がいるということです。門がありますが、それは、エゼキエル書42:16-19の記述を踏まえているのでしょう。城壁の下には、「12の土台石」があります。門の12部族の名と土台の12使徒の名、それは旧約と新約、つまり天地創造から終末に至るまでに救われた人々が一つとなる世界です。さらにその世界は、様々な宝石で飾られています（18節）。実際にそのような宝石で飾られているというのではなく、人類がまだ経験していないことを、既に人類が経験していることをもって語ろうとしています。つまりそれらは大祭司の胸当ての宝石と同じで、神の臨在を象徴します（出エジプト28:17-20）。通りは透き通ったガラスのような純金。透き通ったガラスの中では、小さな傷も目立ちます。つまり完全な純粋さを意味します。その世界の光源は子羊であり、子羊は神と同じ存在であると語られます（22節）。そして暗くなると地上の都は門を閉じますが、この都の門は決して閉じられることがありません。夜がないからです（25節）。これも一種のたとえで、新しい天での生活は充実していることを物語っているのでしょう。
3．誰が入れるのか？
そしてヨハネは繰り返します。27節、「すべて汚れたもの、また忌まわしいことや偽りを行う者は、決して都に入れない。入ることができるのは、子羊のいのちの書に記されている者たちだけである。」と。これは8節に書かれた「おくびょう者、不信仰の者、忌まわしい者、人を殺す者、淫らなことを行う者、魔術を行う者、偶像を拝む者、すべて偽りを言う者たちが受ける分は、火と硫黄の燃える池の中にある（8節）」と言い換えです。
ウェストミンスター大教理問答書は、人を殺してはならないとは、他人に暴力を振るい、息の根を止めることだけではなく、飲食、睡眠、労働などが適切であること、また進んで人とやわらぎ赦す姿勢があることも含めていると言います。そうなると結局この素晴らしい神の御国に入れる人は誰もいないのではないかと思う方も多いでしょう。
しかし、神は言われます「ことは成就した…わたしは渇く者に、いのちの泉からただで飲ませる」（6）そこに入れる人々は、イエスのこの言葉を受け入れた人々です（ヨハネ19:30）彼らは勝利者とも呼ばれていますが（7節）ただの勝利者ではありません。4章で学んだように、勝利者でありながら、自らの勝利の冠を神にお返しする謙遜な人々です。つまり、キリストの前に自分は全く罪人であり、神のあわれみと助けがあったればこそ古い世界も生き抜けたし、この新しい世界にも入ることを許されたのだ、と遜った心を持った人たちです。そのような人だけが入れる場所となれば、そこは確かに今の世とは全く異なる世界でしょう。
新しい世界は、この世の世界の延長でもバージョンアップ（更新）でもありません。明らかに非連続な世界です。けれども、イエスの十字架にある罪の赦しという架け橋によって、行くことのできる世界なのです。終末は人類の分かれ道です。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Revelation 21: A New Heaven and a New Earth
- “To Begin” and “To End” (21:1-15)
Verse 1 says, “The first heaven and the first earth will pass away.” We spend our days without giving much thought to our future. However, the environment in which humans live is in a serious state, with global warming, air and ocean pollution, the depletion of energy resources, the threat of nuclear development and war, the strengthening of nationalism and the expansion of ethnic conflicts, etc. Many people are probably wondering how long this Earth can hold out.
There are many different ways of thinking about the future of the Earth. As is often seen in Hollywood movies, even if a nuclear war or a collision of planets occurs and the Earth is in danger of destruction, it is possible to think that humans will overcome it with scientific power and courage. Or there is a way to solve it within yourself in a mindful manner, focusing only on the certain present, thinking, “If you realize, this world is paradise, but if you do not realize, this world is hell.” Furthermore, it is possible to think about reincarnation, that the human world continues like a circle and will never end.
The Bible tells us that this world was created by God, and that one day God will end human history. In a way, it is Hollywood-like, but it is an apocalyptic view of history in which human scientific ability and courage are useless and the extinction of humanity is inevitable. However, there is more to it than that. It tells us that the end of this world is for a new beginning, and that there is a next world. The final chapters 21 and 22 talk about the splendor of that new world, the New Jerusalem. - The New World (21:16-27)
That world is a new world that has no continuity with the current world. God will be there (3). In the prophet Ezekiel’s vision, the name of the city was also spoken of as “the Lord is there” (Ezekiel 48:35). And in that world, verse 4 says, “There will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.” When a person dies, there is sorrow for those left behind. But in the new world, there is no death, so there is no sorrow of death. And God has deeply healed the wounds of our souls and hearts, and all that has passed away has passed away, so we are no longer tormented by trauma.
From verse 16 onwards, the appearance of the new world is described in detail. Its size is 12,000 stadia. One stadium is 185 meters. This works out to 2,220 kilometers. It is roughly a cube with the base the size of the African continent. It is a huge city that is hard to imagine. However, this is also an expression unique to apocalyptic literature and is not to be taken literally. It only means something like “a very great city.”
There is also a wall. This is not for defense, because all enemies have been destroyed. It means that there are people who can enter and those who cannot. There are gates, which is probably based on the description in Ezekiel 42:16-19. Under the wall are “twelve foundation stones.” The names of the 12 tribes on the gate and the names of the 12 apostles on the foundation are the world where all those who have been saved from the Old Testament and the New Testament, that is, from the creation of the world to the end of the world, will be united. Furthermore, the world is adorned with various precious stones (verse 18). It is not that the world is actually adorned with such precious stones, but rather that it is trying to speak of something that humanity has not yet experienced, but that humanity has already experienced. In other words, they are the same as the jewels on the breastplate of the high priest, and symbolize the presence of God (Exodus 28:17-20). The street is pure gold like transparent glass. Even small scratches stand out in transparent glass, which means perfect purity. The light source of that world is the Lamb, and it is said that the Lamb is the same being as God (verse 22). And when it gets dark, the city on earth closes its gates, but the gates of this city will never be closed. Because there is no night (verse 25). This is also a kind of parable, and it seems to tell us that life in the new heaven will be fulfilling.
- Who can enter?
And John repeats: Verse 27 says, “No unclean thing shall enter into the city, nor anyone who practices abominations or lies; only those who are found written in the Lamb’s book of life.” This is a paraphrase of verse 8, “The portion of the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexual immorality, sorcerers, idolaters and all liars will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone (verse 8).”
The Westminster Larger Catechism says that not killing does not only mean using violence against others and taking their life, but also includes proper eating, drinking, sleeping, working, etc., and being willing to be gentle and forgiving towards others. Many people may think that in the end, no one can enter this wonderful kingdom of God.
But God says, “It is accomplished…I will give to him that thirsts to drink freely from the fountain of life” (6). Those who can enter are those who have accepted these words of Jesus (John 19:30). They are also called overcomers (verse 7), but they are not just overcomers. As we learned in Chapter 4, they are overcomers who are humble enough to return their crowns of victory to God. In other words, they are people who have a humble heart and believe that they were completely sinners before Christ, and that it was only because of God’s mercy and help that they were able to survive the old world and were allowed to enter this new world. If only such people could enter the new world, it would certainly be a completely different world from the current world.
The new world is not an extension or upgrade of the current world. It is clearly a discontinuous world. However, it is a world that can be entered by the bridge of forgiveness of sins on the cross of Jesus. The end is a crossroads for humanity. God’s word is true. May God bless you.
