1．サルディスの教会へ＝霊的に死んでいることの危険性（3:1-6）
今日は、サルディスの教会から見ていきます。イエスは、ご自分について「神の七つの御霊、および、七つの星を持つ方」と語ります。ユダヤ人の文化で、七は完全数です。完全な神、教会の指導者すべてに支配を及ぼしていると言うわけです。その神がサルディスの教会の問題を指摘します。「あなたは、生きているとは名ばかりで、実は死んでいる（1節）」
立派な教会と思いきや、それは蝋人形の館である、と言うのです。外見は健全に見えながら、いのちのない形骸化した教会。イエスは、そのような教会に、目を覚まし、新しい命を燃やすように命じています。そして、死にかけている他の人を力づけなさい、と言います。また、そうなるためには、自分がどのように信仰に入ったのか思い起こし、悔い改めよと言います。
信仰を持つ、それは始まりです。あなたは神のいのちとその聖さに与るように、また信仰によって新しい人生を形造って、それを完成しなくてはならないのです。もしそのようにあなたが生きるのなら、あなたには三つの祝福があると言います。白い衣を与えられ、いのちの書の名前は確約され、さらに神が公の前でその人の名を呼ばれます。つまり神は、ご自身との関係を永遠に保障し、死後の安息といのちを守ると約束しているのです。
2．フィラデルフィアの教会へ＝チャレンジしないことの危険性（3:7-13）
フィラデルフィアは、地理的に東の玄関口として知られ、ギリシアの文化と言語を、トルコの東側に伝える重要な拠点でした。神は、福音を宣べ伝えるために、この教会を守り、用る、と約束します。だから、誰にもその特権を奪われないようにしなさいと言います。神が与えておられる賜物をよく知り、それを用いて、福音を宣べ伝えなさいと語られる。その努力は実を結ぶと約束されるのです。
3．ラオディキアの教会へ＝無関心にあることの危険性（3:14-22）
最後にラオディキアにある教会。ラオディキアは、経済的に豊かな町でした。紀元前60年の大地震で町が崩壊した時も、市民だけの経済力で町を復興したと言います。ローマ帝国の援助は不要だったのです。しかし、その有り余る豊かさの中で、信仰的な情熱を失ってしまった教会でした。ただ自己満足的に、世俗的な楽しみに浸るだけの教会、それがラオディキアの教会でした。
そこでキリストは、彼らの豊かさが、どこから来ているのかを思い起こさせています。神の守り無くして、その豊かさはなかったのです。それを忘れている状況に神はむかつきます。そして、懲らしめられる前に悔い改めよと勧めます。神は叱責しますが見捨てるお方ではありません。これは、豊かさにまどろむ教会への警告として、18章で再び語られることになります。
以上イエスは、7つの教会それぞれに特定の私信を送り、すべての教会が自身と対面し、ふさわしい応答をすることを繰り返しています。初めの愛に冷えていたエペソの教会は、キリストの愛に触れる必要がありました。苦難を恐れていたスミルナの教会は、復活し勝利した力あるキリストに触れる必要がありました。苦難に妥協し、いい加減な信仰生活を送っていたペルガモンの教会は、忠実なキリストと交わる必要がありました。偽預言者イゼベルに振り回されていたティアティラの教会は、キリストの主権に触れる必要がありました。そして見掛け倒しのサルディスの教会は、キリストのいのちに、小さな群れであったけれども大きな可能性を秘めていたフィラデルフィアの教会はキリストの力に、そしてラオディキアの教会は、キリストの熱意に触れる必要がありました。
イエスはあなたの心の戸を叩き続けておられます。私には関係がないと思いますか。いや、当時の七つの教会は、現代の教会のあり様をよく物語っているものです。私たちが素直に内省するところに、教会の霊的な再生があることでしょう。サイズの問題ではありません。悔い改めて、教会の主であるキリストと共に一歩を踏み出すこととしましょう。

Revelation 3: The Second Half of the Letter to the Seven Churches
1. to the church in Sardis = the danger of being spiritually dead (3:1-6)
Today we will look at this from the church in Sardis. Jesus speaks of Himself as “the One who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars. In Jewish culture, seven is the perfect number. So we say that He is the perfect God, exerting control over all the leaders of the church. That God points out the problem with the church in Sardis. You call yourself alive, but in fact you are dead (v. 1).”
He says, “You think you are a fine church, but you are a house of wax dolls. A church that looks healthy on the outside but is a lifeless skeleton. Jesus commands such a church to wake up and kindle new life. And he tells them to empower others who are dying. And to do so, he says, remember how you came to faith and repent.
Having faith is a beginning. You must complete it by shaping your new life by faith so that you may partake of God’s life and His holiness. If you live that way, he says, you will have three blessings. You will be given a white robe, your name in the Book of Life will be confirmed, and God will call your name in public. In other words, God promises to guarantee an eternal relationship with Himself and to preserve rest and life after death.
2. to the church in Philadelphia = the danger of not being challenged (3:7-13)
Philadelphia, known geographically as the gateway to the east, was an important center for bringing Greek culture and language to the eastern part of Turkey. God promises to protect and use this church to preach the gospel. Therefore, he tells us not to let anyone take that privilege away from us. He tells us to know well the gifts God has given us and to use them to proclaim the gospel. He promises that their efforts will bear fruit.
3. to the church in Laodicea = the danger of being indifferent (3:14-22)
Finally, the church in Laodicea. Laodicea was an economically prosperous town. Even when the town collapsed in the great earthquake of 60 B.C., it was rebuilt by the economic power of its citizens alone. They did not need any assistance from the Roman Empire. However, in the midst of this abundance, the church had lost its religious passion. The church of Laodicea was a church that only indulged in worldly pleasures in a self-satisfied manner.
So Christ reminds them where their abundance came from. Without God’s protection, they would not have had that abundance. God is disgusted at the situation of forgetting that. He encourages them to repent before they are chastised. God rebukes but does not abandon. This will be repeated in chapter 18 as a warning to the churches slumbering in abundance.
Above, Jesus sends a specific personal letter to each of the seven churches, reiterating that all churches must come face to face with Himself and respond as they deserve. The church in Ephesus, which was cold to love in the beginning, needed to be touched by the love of Christ. The church in Smyrna, fearful of suffering, needed to touch the risen and victorious and powerful Christ. The church in Pergamum, which had compromised with tribulation and lived a lax life of faith, needed to be in communion with the faithful Christ. The church in Thyatira, which had been swept away by the false prophetess Jezebel, needed to touch the Lordship of Christ. The church in Sardis, which had been disingenuous, needed to be touched by the life of Christ; the church in Philadelphia, which was a small flock but had great potential, needed to be touched by the power of Christ; and the church in Laodicea needed to be touched by the zeal of Christ.
Jesus keeps knocking at the door of your heart. Do you think I am not involved? No. The seven churches of that time are a good illustration of what the church is today. Where we honestly introspect, there will be a spiritual rebirth of the church. It is not a matter of size. Let us repent and take a step forward with Christ, the Lord of the Church.
