1. 人は皆悔い改めが求められている（13:1-9）
1節「ピラトがガリラヤ人たちの血をガリラヤ人たちが献げるいけにえに混ぜた」とあります。この時、エルサレムでは、供給水量の増大を計る必要が生じ、上水道整備の計画が進められていました。ピラトは、その費用をまかなうために、神殿に蓄えられているユダヤ人のお金に目をつけたのです。ところが神殿のお金をそのような公共事業に使うのは間違っていると、ユダヤ人たちは反発しました。そこでピラトは、ローマの兵士を送り込み、彼らをぶちのめし、強制的にお金を取り上げようとしました。ちょうどガリラヤ人の宗教祭儀中、つまりちょうどいけにえの血を祭壇に注いでいた時にこの事件が起こり、死傷した人たちの血がそのいけにえの血に混じってしまったというわけです。
また、シロアムの塔が倒れて圧殺された18人の事件は、この上水道整備の工事中に工事現場で崩落事故があって、死傷者が出たことを言っています。神殿のお金を勝手に使ったがゆえに、事故が起こった、それは、神の裁きによる、と考える者たちがいました。
しかし、イエスは、その因果応報的な考えを否定したのです。人に何か不幸が起るとその人が格別罰当たりなことをしたからだと考える、それは誤りです。私は、クリスチャンがすべてを神のみこころとして受け止めるのは、正しいことだと思っていますが、因果応報的に物事を決めつけて考えてしまうのは、どうかなと考えています。神のみこころをわかったつもりになってはならないからです。神のみこころなど、天に行って、神と膝を交えて語り合うまで、完全にはわからない部分があるのです。ヨブの出来事を思い出しましょう。ヨブは、生きている間、天でサタンとの取引があったことは一切知らされませんでした。因果応報的に考え自分の人生に希望を失ってしまうような考え方の癖は、捨て去りましょう。
なお、6節以降のぶどう園の番人のたとえは、物事にはタイムリミットがあることを伝えています。ただそれは、神の我慢にも限界があると言っているわけではありません。人間の寿命のリミットを意識させているのです。悔い改めの時を逃してはなりません。
2．キリストと苦難を共にする（13:10-35）
しかし残念なことに、人は自分のタイムリミットも、昨日お話した何が正しいかも悟ことのできない愚かさを持っています。10節、18年も病の霊につかれた女性が安息日に癒されたエピソード、それに伴って起こった議論は、まさに物の道理がわからない人間の現実を指摘しているのです。イエスは、安息日の定めがあろうとも、牛やろばに水を飲ませるように、困った人がいれば助けるのは当たり前のことだ、と語ります。しかしイエスの行動に目くじらを立てた会堂司は、生身の人間が助けられるよりも制度が守られることを重んじたのです。実に的外れで、頑迷な会堂司です。しかしそれは自分の姿なのかもしれません。日々ニュースを見ながら、一方的な我欲に支配されて暴力が振るわれる、指導者たちの愚かさによって戦争が続く、政府の都合で、地方自治が捻じ曲げられる、そんな状況に痛ましさを感じますが、一旦体制側につけば、自分も同じようなことをするのではないか、と思うところがあります。
23節、ある人が問いかけました。「主よ、救われる人は少ないのですか」ここは、「そうだ」と返されるところでしょうが、イエスは、言いました。24節「狭い門から入るように努めなさい」と。「努めなさい」と訳された言葉の語源は「苦悶」です。人が人らしくあるためには、どこか悩みと痛みを負うのが本当なのでしょう。26節、信仰者も色々、神を信じて、神の側に立っていると思い込んでいるだけで、実際には、神と心かけ離れ、神の心の痛みを共に負わぬ人生もあります。30節は、マルコやマタイとは異なる文脈で使われています。読み比べると意味が鮮明になります。つまり、先と逆に痛みを負う人生を、卑下し、神の御心に沿っていないと迷う必要はない。イエスの足跡に従っている痛みであるのならば、神はその隠れた忠実な信仰の歩みを見出し、報いてくださることでしょう。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。
Luke 13: Repent.
1. all men are called to repentance (13:1-9)
Verse 1: “Pilate mixed the blood of the Galileans with the sacrifices offered by the Galileans. At this time, Jerusalem needed to increase its water supply, and plans were underway to build a waterworks system. Pilate turned to the Jewish money stored in the Temple to cover the cost. However, the Jews objected, saying that it was wrong to use Temple funds for such a public works project. So Pilate sent Roman soldiers to beat them up and forcibly take away the money. This incident occurred just as the Galileans were pouring the blood of the sacrifice on the altar, and the blood of the dead and wounded was mixed in with the blood of the sacrifice.
Also, the incident of the 18 people who were crushed to death when the tower of Siloam collapsed says that there was a collapse at the construction site during the construction of this water supply system maintenance, resulting in casualties. There were those who thought that the accident was caused by God’s judgment because the temple’s money was used without permission.
Jesus, however, rejected this retributive view. It is a mistake to think that when something unfortunate happens to a person, it is because he or she has done something exceptionally wrong. I think it is right for Christians to accept everything as God’s will, but I don’t think it is right to think of things in a cause-and-effect manner. We should not think that we understand God’s will. There are parts of God’s will that we will never fully understand until we go to heaven and talk with God on our knees. Let us remember the incident of Job. During his lifetime, Job was not informed of any dealings with Satan in heaven. Let us discard the habit of thinking in terms of cause and effect that causes us to lose hope in our own lives.
In addition, the parable of the keeper of the vineyard from verse 6 onward tells us that there is a time limit to things. But that is not to say that there is a limit to God’s endurance. It is making us aware of the limit of human life span. We must not miss the time for repentance.
2. share suffering with Christ (13:10-35)
Unfortunately, people have the foolishness to realize neither their own time limit nor what is right, as I mentioned yesterday. Jesus is not a man who knows the Sabbath day. Jesus tells us that it is natural to help those in need, just as we would give water to an ox or a donkey, regardless of whether the Sabbath is observed or not. But the synagogue bishop, who was annoyed by Jesus’ actions, valued the observance of the institution more than the help of flesh-and-blood human beings. He is a very misguided and obstinate congregation leader. But perhaps that is what I am. As I watch the news every day, I am pained by the violence waged by one-sided selfishness, the wars that continue due to the stupidity of leaders, and the twisting of local autonomy for the convenience of the government. Once you are on the side of the regime, you wonder if you will do the same thing.
In verse 23, a man asked, “Lord, who will be saved? The root of the word translated “strive” is “anguish. Verse 26, there are many believers who believe in God and think they are standing on God’s side, but in reality, they are far from God and do not share in the pain of God’s heart. The meaning becomes clearer when you compare the two verses. The meaning becomes clearer when we compare the two readings. In other words, there is no need to despise a life that bears pain contrary to the previous one and stray from it as not being in line with God’s will. If it is pain that is following in the footsteps of Jesus, God will find and reward that hidden faithful walk of faith. So I wish you a good day today.
