1．初子の聖別と記念（13:1-16）
モーセは神のことばを伝えます。与えられた初子は神のために聖別せよ、と。聖別は、特別に選り分けて、これを神に献げることを意味しました。初子は親のものでも、家のものでもなく、神のものである、と。それは、イスラエルの初子は、エジプトでの災いから特別に守られた出来事を踏まえているのでしょう。また、初子は、長子、跡継ぎとして重要な存在です。その最も大事なものを神が守られたのですから、神への感謝と崇敬を持って生きることは自然なことです。
続いて、これから行われることになっている過越節と（3-10節）初子を献げる儀式（11-16節）について、その細かな手順が述べられます。大切なのは、「覚えていなさい」という主の命令です。つまりこの出エジプトという歴史的な大事件は、神の力ある御業によることをよく覚えよ、というわけです。
今日、ユダヤ教徒はこの9節を文字通りに解釈し、革ひもに小箱がついたものを腕と頭に巻き付けています。腕用のものは、「テフィリーン・シェル・ヤ―ド」、額用のものは「テフィリーン・シェル・ローシュ」と言い、箱の中には出エジプト記13:1-10，11-16、申命記6:4-9、11:13-21羊皮紙の巻物が入っていると言います。ユダヤ人は朝の祈祷の時にこれをつけて祈ります。ここまでして神の御業を覚え続けるのか、と驚かされますが、その意義をよく理解しなくてはなりません。
つまり、それは、出エジプトの出来事が過去の一度きりの出来事では終わらないという信仰を持つためです。単に過去に素晴らしい出来事があったと記憶に留めるのではなく、新しい救いの根拠として覚えていくのです。
実際、出エジプトは、新約聖書においては、キリストの救いの御業と結びつけられています（ヨハネ1:29）。出エジプトは奴隷状態からの解放を象徴し、それはキリストによる罪からの解放と直接的に結びついています。あなたの人生にも、このイエスによる出エジプトが起こりうるのです。神は昔も今も変わることはありません。その信仰によってあなたの人生を神の祝福に満ちたものにすることです。
3．脱出の道(13:17-22 )
モーセとイスラエルの民たちは、ラメセスを出発し、約束の地カナンへと進みました。当時、エジプトからパレスチナに向かう道は、三通りありました。第一に、地中海を海沿いに北上する「海の道」。エジプト人は「ホルスの道」と名づけましたが、聖書では「ペリシテ人の国の道」と呼ばれています。それはエジプトからイスラエルへ徒歩で約2週間の最短経路で、エジプトの軍隊が駐留する軍用道路でもありました。第二の道は、「海の道」に平行し、内陸を通る「シュルの道」です。かつてエジプト人の女奴隷ハガルがアブラハムの家から逃れ、エジプトに向かったのは、この道であったとされます。主として遊牧民や商人が往来する商用道路でした。第三の道は、現在では巡礼者の道として知られている道で、スエズ湾からアカバ湾へとシナイ半島を横切る、最も内陸よりの道でした。
しかし、神が、イスラエル人を進ませた道は、そのいずれでもありませんでした。
聖書は、その点について「葦の海」を渡ったということ、「荒野の路」を通った、と述べているだけで、正確にその地点や経路については述べていません。ただ、さまざまな考古学的な研究でわかってきていることは、葦の海は、スエズ湾先端付近で、そこからスエズ湾に沿って、逆三角形のシナイ半島を南下し、シナイ半島の先端にあるシナイ山で折り返してアカバ湾沿いに北上、パレスチナに入ったということです。なぜこのような路を通ったのか。実際的に考えてみれば、200万以上の人口が一斉に移動するのですから、シュルの道や巡礼者の道という普通の商用道路では狭すぎたこともあるでしょうし、軍用道路を進んでエジプトの軍隊と衝突することもできなかった事情もあるでしょう。
ただ神のなさることは、常に私たちの思いを超えています。神は神の道、つまり人が進もうとはしないまったく新しい葦の海を奇跡的に渡る道を用意されました。神と共に歩む人生は、未踏の地に踏み出していくようなものです。そして神は「雲の柱、火の柱」となって、私たちの先を進まれ、私たちの新しい歩みを先導されるのです。

Exodus 13 Remember this.
- sanctification and commemoration of the firstborn (13:1-16)
Moses delivers the word of God. Moses tells us God’s word that the firstborn given to us is to be sanctified to God. Sanctification meant to make a special selection and offer it to God. The firstborn belongs to God, not to the parents or to the family. This may be based on the event in which the firstborn of Israel were specially protected from the plagues in Egypt. Also, the firstborn is important as the firstborn and heir. Since God protected that most important thing, it is natural to live with gratitude and reverence for God.
The detailed procedures for the Passover (vv. 3-10) and the ceremony of offering the firstborn (vv. 11-16), which are to take place in the coming days, are then described. What is important is the Lord’s command to “remember. In other words, remember that this great historical event, the Exodus, was the result of the mighty work of God.
Today, Jews interpret verse 9 literally and wear leather straps with small boxes attached to them around their arms and heads. The one for the arm is called “tefillin shel yad” and the one for the forehead is called “tefillin shel rosh,” and the box is said to contain parchment scrolls from Exodus 13:1-10, 11-16; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 11:13-21. Jews pray with it during morning prayer. It is astonishing that they would go to such lengths to continue to remember God’s work, but we must understand the significance of this.
The reason for this is to have faith that the Exodus is not a one-time event in the past. We are not simply to remember it as a wonderful event in the past, but to remember it as the basis for a new salvation.
In fact, the Exodus is linked to the saving work of Christ in the New Testament (John 1:29). The Exodus symbolizes deliverance from slavery, which is directly tied to Christ’s deliverance from sin. This exodus by Jesus can happen in your life as well. God was and remains the same. It is your faith that makes your life full of God’s blessings. - the way of escape (13:17-22 )
Moses and the Israelites left Rameses and proceeded to the Promised Land of Canaan. At that time, there were three ways to get from Egypt to Palestine. First, the “way of the sea,” which went north along the Mediterranean Sea. The Egyptians named it the “Way of Horus,” but in the Bible it is called the “Way of the Philistines. It was the shortest route from Egypt to Israel, about two weeks on foot, and was also a military road along which Egyptian troops were stationed. The second road is the “Road of Shur,” which parallels the “Road of the Sea” and runs inland. It is said that it was along this road that Hagar, a female Egyptian slave, once escaped from Abraham’s house and headed for Egypt. It was primarily a commercial road for nomads and merchants. The third road, now known as the pilgrim’s road, was the most inland, crossing the Sinai Peninsula from the Gulf of Suez to the Gulf of Aqaba.
But the road God led the Israelites on was neither of these.
The Bible does not say exactly where or how, only that they crossed the “Sea of Reeds” and that they took the “wilderness route. However, various archaeological studies have shown that the Sea of Reeds was near the tip of the Gulf of Suez, and that from there, the people traveled along the Gulf of Suez, southward along the inverted triangle of the Sinai Peninsula, turned around at Mount Sinai at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, and traveled northward along the Gulf of Aqaba into Palestine. Why did they take this route? Practically speaking, the ordinary commercial roads, such as the Shul Road and the Pilgrim’s Progress, would have been too narrow for a population of over 2 million people moving all at once, and it would have been impossible for them to proceed along the military roads and clash with the Egyptian army.
But what God does is always beyond our thoughts. God has prepared a divine path, a path that miraculously crosses an entirely new sea of reeds that no man would ever attempt to cross. Life with God is like stepping out into the unexplored. And God is “a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire,” moving ahead of us and leading us in our new walk.
