1．金の子牛を崇拝する（32:1-6）
出エジプト記の32章では、18章から途絶えていた歴史的な記録が再開されます。それまでの19章から31章では、イスラエルの民に与えられた律法や神礼拝のあり方についての教えが語られていました。
モーセはシナイ山に登り、40日間も山の上にとどまっていました。イスラエルの民は、モーセが長期間戻らないことに不安を感じ、彼が山で亡くなったのではないかと心配しました。本来ならば、昼は雲の柱、夜は火の柱が神の臨在を示すものでしたが、それも自然現象のように見えてしまい、彼らは神の時を待てずに現実的な何かを求め始めました。
そこで、イスラエルの民は自分たちを安心させるために偶像を作ることにしました。人間は、自分で作ったもので安心を得ようとする生き物かもしれません。偶像を作ってそれを拝むことで安心する人もいれば、家を建てたり財産を築いたりして安心する人もいます。いずれにしても、何か物質的なものに頼って安心しようとするのが人間の性です。
モーセが不在の間に指導者を務めたアロンは、民の要求に応じて金の装身具を集め、鋳物の子牛を作り、それを神の象徴として礼拝することを許してしまいました。アロンは、民の圧力に屈し、芯のない指導者としての姿を示してしまったのです。
2．とりなすモーセ（32:7-35）
神は、イスラエルの民が金の子牛を崇拝しているのを見て、モーセに山から降りるように指示しました。モーセが山を降りてくると、民が鋳物の子牛を礼拝しながら騒いでいるのを耳にしました。それはまるで異教徒のような乱痴気騒ぎでした。
先の30章で、彼らは聖霊の油注ぎを受けて神に特別に選ばれた民であることを学びましたが、ここでは偶像を礼拝することでその教えを忘れたかのように振る舞っています。神はイスラエルの民に激しく怒り、モーセには「彼らを滅ぼすが、あなたは大いなる国民とする」と言いました（10節）。
ここで注目すべきは、モーセがその神の約束を受けながらも、イスラエルの民の側に立って、彼らと共に歩む決意をしたことです（へブル11:25）。彼は神のしもべとして、民を見捨てず、神にとりなしを始めるのです。
モーセは民に「あなたがたは大きな罪を犯した。だから今、私は主のところに上って行く。もしかすると、あなた方の罪のために宥めをすることができるかもしれない。（30節）」と言いました。そして、主の下に戻ると「今、もしあなたが彼らの罪を許してくださるなら、しかし、もし、かなわないなら、どうかあなたがお書きになった書物から私の名を消し去ってください（32節）」と祈りました。
これは、まことのとりなしというものがどういうものであるのかを、深く教えてくれるエピソードです。モーセは自己保身を考えず、民と共に生きることを選びました。その姿勢は、まさにキリストの十字架での行動と重なるものです。そして聖霊のあぶら注ぎを受けるというのは、このような姿勢を貫ける者であることを意味するのです。
指導者も色々です。イエスが指摘したように、雇人のような牧者もいるのです（ヨハネ10:7-15）。そのような牧者は、羊を利用し、狼が来るのを見ると、羊を置き去りにして逃げ出してしまいます。さらに、羊を奪ったり散らしたりするのです。自己保身を考え、人を切り捨てるずるい牧者、これは現実問題としてあることでしょう。しかし、人が人のせいにして、逃げ出すような時に逃げ出さない、むしろいのちを棄てるまことの指導者もいるのです。
モーセは、民が赦されるなら自分の命と引き換えに祈り続けました。神はモーセの真剣なとりなしと祈りによって、民を救われました。実に彼のとりなしと祈りがあればこそ、神は民を救ったと言ってもよいでしょう。この時代に求められる指導者とは、他人の罪を自らの罪として悔い改め、神にとりなし祈る者であるということを教えてくれます。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。では、また明日、このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Exodus Chapter 32: Israel Loses Its Distinction
Worshiping the Golden Calf (32:1-6)
In Chapter 32, the historical record resumes after being paused since Chapter 18. Chapters 19-31 focused on the laws given to the Israelites and how they should worship God.
Moses went up Mount Sinai and stayed there for 40 days. The Israelites got worried because Moses was gone for so long, and they thought he might have died on the mountain. They couldn’t wait for God’s timing and started looking for something tangible to rely on.
The Israelites decided to make an idol to calm their fears. Humans often seek security in things they can create or possess. Some find comfort in worshiping idols, building houses, or accumulating wealth.
While Moses was gone, Aaron, who was leading the people, gave in to their demands. He collected gold jewelry and made a golden calf, which they worshipped as a symbol of God. Aaron showed weak leadership by giving in to the people’s pressure.
Moses Intercedes (32:7-35)
God saw the Israelites worshiping the golden calf and told Moses to go down the mountain. When Moses came down, he heard the people celebrating wildly around the idol.
In Chapter 30, they learned they were chosen by God and anointed with the Holy Spirit. But now, they seemed to have forgotten this by worshiping an idol. God was very angry and told Moses He would destroy the people but make Moses into a great nation (verse 10).
What’s remarkable is that Moses, despite God’s promise to him, chose to stand with the people and intercede for them (Hebrews 11:25). He remained a servant of God and didn’t abandon the people.
Moses told the people, “You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin” (verse 30). When he returned to the Lord, he prayed, “Now, if You would only forgive their sin. But if not, please blot me out of the book You have written” (verse 32).
This episode teaches us about true intercession. Moses chose to live with the people and not think of his safety. This is similar to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Being anointed with the Holy Spirit means standing firm and not fleeing when others blame and run away. It’s about living a life distinct from sinners who try to protect themselves.
Moses prayed continuously, willing to trade his life for the people’s forgiveness. God saved the people because of Moses’ sincere intercession and prayer.
Leaders vary as well. As Jesus pointed out, some pastors are like hired hands (John 10:7-15). Such pastors take advantage of the sheep, and when they see the wolves coming, they leave them behind and run away. Furthermore, they take and scatter the sheep. A sly pastor who thinks of self-preservation and cuts people off, this may be a real problem. But there are also true leaders who do not run away when people blame others and run away, but rather abandon their lives.
