はじめに
もしあなたが、余命がわずかだと知らされたら、どうしますか？旧約聖書「列王記第二」20章には、そんな絶望的な状況に置かれた王ヒゼキヤの物語が描かれています。私は牧師として、似たような思いを抱える方々と出会うことがあります。そのため、この物語は決して昔話だとは思えません。まずは、本章の流れを簡単にたどっていきましょう。
1．本章の構成
本章は3つのエピソードに分かれています。最初は「ヒゼキヤの病と癒し」（1～11節）です。ヒゼキヤ王は死を宣告されますが、涙を流して神に必死に祈ったことで、寿命が15年延びるという奇跡を経験しました。また、日時計の影が10度戻るという特別なしるしも与えられます。
次は「バビロン使節への対応」（12～19節）です。回復したヒゼキヤは、バビロンから来た使者に宝物庫や財産をすべて見せてしまい、これが思わぬ失敗となりました。このエピソードからは、人間の弱さや信仰の揺らぎがうかがえます。
最後は「ヒゼキヤの業績と死」（20～21節）です。彼の最大の功績は、エルサレムの水源を守るためにトンネルを造り、水を引き入れたことです。このトンネルは実際に考古学でも発見されている、歴史的にも確かなものです。
ここから、特に大切なポイントに注目してみましょう。
2．涙に寄り添う神
まず心に残るのは、神が人間の涙に心を動かされる、という点です。ヒゼキヤは重い病に倒れて死を告げられ、壁に顔を向けて必死に涙しながら祈りました。その姿には孤独さと必死さが感じられます。聖書は「神はその涙を見た」と語ります。これは重要な場面です。神は人間の感情に無関心ではなく、涙にも心を寄せてくださるのです。
新約聖書でも、イエスが友人ラザロの死を悲しみ、涙を流した場面が思い起こされます。ヒゼキヤは祈りによって命を15年延ばしてもらい、さらに日時計の影が10度戻るという奇跡を体験しました。これは時間さえも神が支配していることを示しています。つまり、私たちのいのちは神の手にあるのだと強く感じさせられます。
また、「わたしのしもべダビデのために」という言葉が繰り返されていることにも注目しましょう。ここで神は、ヒゼキヤの涙だけに心を動かされただけではありません。神は、父祖ダビデへの約束を守るために、ヒゼキヤの願いにも応えたのです。これは、私たちにとってはイエスとの約束が基になって、神が私たちにも良いことをしてくださる、という深い意味を示しています。
3．ヒゼキヤの失敗
しかし、物語はそれだけで終わりません。回復したヒゼキヤは、バビロンからの使者を歓迎して、国の財産のすべてを見せてしまいました。これが問題を引き起こします。
当時、イスラエルはアッシリアという強国の脅威に悩まされていました。そのため、バビロンは頼れる味方に見えたのでしょう。ヒゼキヤは強い味方を得たくて心を許し、バビロンと親しくなってしまいました。けれども、これは「人間同士の依存心」に他なりません。
もちろん仲間や協力者に恵まれるのは嬉しいことですが、本当に最後まで助けてくださるのは神だけだということを、忘れてはいけません。いつも頼るべきお方は主であるということを、心から大切にしたいものです。
4．ヒゼキヤの偉業
最後に注目したいのは「トンネル工事」です。ヒゼキヤはエルサレムの水源を守るため、ギホンの泉から城内までトンネルを掘って水を引き入れました。実際に1880年、シロアムの池でこの工事を証明する碑文が発見され、歴史的にも事実だと分かっています。今では観光客がそのトンネルを歩くこともでき、私自身も訪れたことがあります。現地には碑文のレプリカも置かれてあり、歴史と信仰が出会う場所となっています。
まとめ
この章から学べるのは、神は人の祈りや涙に必ず応えてくださるということです。イエスの名による祈りが、私たちにとっての希望になります。

Season 6: 2 Kings 20 – Hezekiah’s Illness and Healing
Introduction
If you were told that you only have a short time to live, what would you do?
The Old Testament book of 2 Kings chapter 20 tells the story of King Hezekiah in such a desperate situation. As a pastor, I often meet people who feel the same way. So, this story is not just an old tale. Let’s first look at the flow of this chapter.
1. Structure of the Chapter
This chapter has three parts.
The first is “Hezekiah’s illness and healing” (verses 1–11). Hezekiah was told he would die, but he prayed to God with tears. Then, his life was extended for 15 years. As a sign, the shadow on the sundial moved back ten steps.
Next is “Hezekiah and the Babylonian envoys” (verses 12–19). After his recovery, Hezekiah showed all his treasures to the envoys from Babylon. This was a big mistake. It shows human weakness and how faith can waver.
The last part is “Hezekiah’s achievements and death” (verses 20–21). His greatest achievement was building a tunnel to bring water into Jerusalem. This tunnel has been found by archaeologists, so it is a historical fact.
2. God Who Sees Our Tears
The most touching point is that God cares about human tears. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed with tears. The Bible says, “God saw his tears.” This is very important. God is not cold. He cares about our feelings.
In the New Testament, Jesus also cried when His friend Lazarus died. Hezekiah prayed and lived 15 more years. The shadow on the sundial moved back ten steps. This shows that even time is under God’s control. Our life is in His hands.
Also notice the words “for the sake of my servant David.” God answered not only because of Hezekiah’s tears but also because of His promise to David. For us, this means God blesses us because of His promise in Jesus.
3. Hezekiah’s Failure
But the story does not end there. Hezekiah welcomed the envoys from Babylon and showed them all his treasures. Why was this wrong?
At that time, Israel was afraid of Assyria, a strong empire. Babylon looked like a good friend. Hezekiah wanted help and trusted them too much. But this is human dependence.
It is good to have friends and partners. But the one who truly helps us to the end is God. We must always trust Him first.
4. Hezekiah’s Great Work
Finally, let’s look at the tunnel. Hezekiah built a tunnel to bring water from the Gihon Spring into the city. In 1880, an inscription was found near the Pool of Siloam that proves this work. Today, tourists can walk through the tunnel. I have been there myself. There is a replica of the inscription. It is a place where history and faith meet.

This chapter teaches us that God answers prayer and sees our tears. Prayer in the name of Jesus gives us hope.
