1．バベルの塔（11:1-9）
人類が増え広がり、町を建て上げていくことは、神のみこころにかなうものでした。しかし、その本質が「肉」である人間のすることは、常に、神の存在を否定する、あるいは、神に敵対するものになってしまうのでしょう。人は、自分を生み出した神を愛することも、従うこともできない存在なのです。
さて人は、自分たちの力と結束を証しする印として、バベルの塔を建てようとしました。今日このような塔は、ジグラットと呼ばれ、メソポタミア地方一帯に30基以上も発掘されています。その中でも、イラク、ヒッラー近郊のバビロンの古代遺跡から車で約2時間半のナースィリーヤ近くで発掘されたジグラット、エ・テメン・アン・キを、この11章に書かれたバビロンの塔であったのではないか、とする説があります。それは底面約91×91メートル、高さ推定約90メートルの7層建てで、最上階には神殿が設けられたものでした。メソポタミア文明最古の文化を築いたと言われるシュメール人によって建設が始められ、長らく中断していた工事を、アッカド王シャル・カリ・シャルリ（BC2250年）が再建、さらに戦争などで幾度か中断、放置されていたものを新バビロニヤ帝国のネブカデネザル二世（BC605-562年在位）が完成した、とされています。しかし、あくまでも参考までです。この物語は、バビロンの特定の塔に関連づける根拠はありません。
ともあれ当初は、この塔に上って、より神に近付いて祈ることが目的でしたが、いつしかその意味は忘れ去られ、人々は、高くそびえる荘厳な塔に自分たちの力を誇り、神を否定し、驕り高ぶるようになったと言われています。
さて神は、人間が優れた能力を自分たちの欲望の赴くままに用い、自らの限界を超えて偉大さを誇示しようとする状況に懸念を示しました（６節）。神のおられる天にまでのぼり、そこに自らの王座を築こうとする試みに、神は、裁きを下されるのです（7節、イザヤ14:13-14）。人間は被造物の限界を超えてはならない、その限界にあってこそ、人間としてありうるのだと言うべきでしょう。
神は人間のことばを混乱させ、人々は全地に散らされていきます。これは、既に、ノアの洪水の後、人類が全地に増え広がったことを別の角度から語るものです。そして大切なのは、ことばが通じなくなったという意味です。それは翻訳機で解消する程度のことではなく、分かり合えなくなった、ということです。つまり、人は神を信じようとしませんでしたが、その不信感は、人にも向けられるようになったのです。分かり合えない人間の現実は、まさに現代社会においても経験されていることです。
2．セム、テラの歴史（11:10-32）
10節からのセムの歴史は、全体的に5章の系図の書き方とよく似ています。セツの系図がアダムからノアまで10代であると同様、セムの系図もセムからアブラハムまで10代とそろっています。しかし、どう考えても、10代以上の時間が流れているはずです。つまりこれもユダヤ人の完全数10に合わせて、記憶しやすさを狙った技巧的な書き方と考えられます。また先のセツの系図に比べて、こちらでは、父祖たちの年齢が次第に短くなっていきます。私たちが常識的に理解できる程度の年齢に縮められているのは、ノアの時代を機に、人間の年齢を120歳とする神の決断が実行に移されたということなのでしょう（6:3）。いずれにしても、全人類を創造した神の見守りの中に彼らの歩みはあったのです。
27節からはテラの歴史です。いよいよ、聖書の本題に入っていくわけですが、大切なのは、神の選びの民とされたアブラハムの家族の性質に注目することです。ノアはまったき人であり、神と共に歩んだ人でしたが、アブラハムの父テラは、ヨシュア記24:2で、「ほかの神々に仕えていた」とされています。いわゆる偶像崇拝者なのです。また「カルデヤ人のウル」は、シュメール文化の中心であり、BC3000年末期から2000年初めにかけて繁栄を極めた大都会です。つまり、アブラハムは、大都会に埋もれた偶像崇拝者の一家族に生まれた人でした。
アブラハムは信仰の父、イスラエルの祖とも言われ、神の大いなる祝福を受けた象徴的存在です。これまでの系図で見たとおり、彼も、他の人々と同じように、神の見守りと支配の中にあったのは間違いありません。しかし、ノアとは異なり、神に特別な好意を受けるような者ではありませんでした。それなのに、彼は神に選ばれて、信仰の父、イスラエルの祖となっていくのです。
それは、私たちにはよく理解のできない、神の不思議なる計画とあわれみによるものでした。しかしそれは、私たちの先例です。自分もこの地上の喧騒の中に埋もれた一人の人間であり、神の好意を受ける特別なものを持たない、むしろ偶像崇拝者である、と思う人がいたら、ここにあなたの人生を変える物語があると知るべきでしょう。つまり神はあなたにも同じ目を向けているということです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Genesis 11: The Tower of Babel, Genealogy
- the tower of Babel (11:1-9)
It was God’s will for mankind to multiply and spread out and build up the city. However, what man, whose nature is “flesh,” does will always be something that denies the existence of God or is hostile to God. Man is incapable of loving or obeying the God who created him.
Now man sought to build the Tower of Babel as a sign of their power and unity. Today, more than 30 such towers, called ziggurats, have been excavated throughout Mesopotamia. Among them, there is a theory that the ziggurat, E Temen an Ki, excavated near Nasiriya, about a 2.5-hour drive from the ancient site of Babylon near Hillah, Iraq, may have been the Babylonian tower described in this chapter 11. It was a seven-story structure with a base of about 91 x 91 meters and an estimated height of about 90 meters, with a temple on the top floor. The construction was started by the Sumerians, who are said to have built the oldest culture of Mesopotamian civilization, and after a long period of interruption, the Akkadian king Shar Kali Shahri (d. 2250 BC) rebuilt it. Nebuchadnezzar II (reigned 605-562 BC) of the New Babylonian Empire completed it. However, this is only for reference. There is no basis for linking this story to a specific tower in Babylon.
It is said that the original purpose of the tower was to climb up and pray closer to God, but the meaning of the tower was forgotten and people began to boast of their power in the majestic towers that soared high, denying God and becoming conceited.
Now God is concerned about the situation in which human beings use their superior abilities to their own desires and try to show off their greatness beyond their own limits (v. 6). God will bring judgment on their attempts to ascend to heaven, where God is, and to establish their own thrones there (v. 7; Isaiah 14:13-14). It should be said that man must not exceed the limits of creation, and it is only in those limits that he can be human.
God will confuse man’s speech, and people will be scattered throughout the whole earth. This already speaks to another angle of the increase and spread of mankind throughout the earth after Noah’s flood. And the important thing is that it means that the language is no longer understood. This is not something that can be resolved with a translator, but it means that we no longer understand each other. In other words, people no longer wanted to believe in God, but their disbelief was now directed at others as well. The reality of people’s inability to understand each other is exactly what is being experienced in contemporary society. - History of Shem and Terah (11:10-32)
The history of Shem from verse 10 is overall similar to the genealogical writing of chapter 5. Just as the genealogy of Setu is ten generations from Adam to Noah, the genealogy of Shem is ten generations from Shem to Abraham. However, by all accounts, there must have been more than 10 generations. In other words, this is also a technical way of writing the genealogy in order to make it easier to remember, in accordance with the perfect Jewish number 10. Also, compared to the earlier Setu genealogy, the ages of the fathers here are gradually shortened. The fact that the ages are reduced to a level that we can understand with common sense may mean that God’s decision to set the age of man at 120 years was put into practice after the time of Noah (6:3). In any case, their progress was under the watchful eye of the God who created all mankind.
From verse 27 onward is the history of Terah. We now come to the main topic of the Bible, and it is important to note the nature of Abraham’s family, who were God’s chosen people. Noah was a perfect man who walked with God, but Terah, Abraham’s father, is described in Joshua 24:2 as “serving other gods. He is a so-called idolater. Ur of the Chaldeans” was also the center of Sumerian culture, a great city that flourished from the late 3000 to early 2000 BC. In other words, Abraham was born into a family of idolaters buried in the great city.
Abraham is said to be the father of faith, the founder of Israel, and symbolic of God’s great blessing. As we have seen in the previous genealogies, he, like the others, was undoubtedly under God’s watchful eye and control. Unlike Noah, however, he was not one who would receive special favor from God. And yet, he was chosen by God to become the father of faith and the founder of Israel.
It was through God’s mysterious plan and mercy, which we cannot quite understand. But it is our precedent. If you think that you are one of those who are buried in the hustle and bustle of this earth, who do not have anything special to earn God’s favor, but rather are idolaters, you should know that here is a story that will change your life.
