1．家を出たヤコブ（28:1-9）
ヤコブは、母親の言うことを聞いて、兄エサウを騙したことで、恨みを買い、窮地に立たされていきます。「子よ、あなたへののろいは私の身にあるように」（27:13）と語った母親リベカも、ヤコブを守り切れなかったのです。この時、彼はどれほど自分の判断力の悪さを感じたかは、よくわかりません。ともあれ、彼は、母親の故郷である叔父ラバンのもとへと逃亡していきます。
ここで、印象深く思わされるのは、父イサクの願いです。イサクは、自分が祈った祝福が、確実となることを願い、ヤコブに繰り返し、送り出すのです。出て行って良き妻を見つけるように、そして必ず、神が、アブラハムの祝福を受け継がせてくれるように、と。
小さな家族的な社会の中で、激しい憎しみは、結果殺し合いへと発展しかねません。事件が起きる前に、ヤコブを外に出すことは、賢明な措置であったと思われます。その先はどうなるか、全く予測もつかなったことでしょう。自分が祈った祝福も、どうなるかわからない。そうであればこそであったのかもしれません。神の祝福の祈りが、神によってなされるように、とただ神に願い、イサクは神を信頼してヤコブを送り出すのです。
他方エサウは、両親のヤコブに対する対応を知り、自分の結婚が両親の気に入らないことに気づきました。そしてイシュマエルの家からもう一人の妻を迎えるのです。なんともいじましいものです。イシュマエル人は、アブラハムのもう一人の妻ケトラの子、身内です。小さな家族的な社会に残った者としては、関係をよく保つための精一杯の行為であったのかもしれません。その後の3人の家族については、聖書は何も語っていませんが、ヤコブが帰ってきた時の様子からすれば、両親とエサウは、独立して生活をしたようです。
2．神に出会うヤコブ（28:10-22）
ともあれ、創世記の著者の関心は、ここから「神の祝福のことば」の遺産を受けたヤコブの人生へと向かうのです。昨日「神の祝福」は、有形の財産ではなかった、むしろそれは、「神の祝福のことば」を信頼して神と共に歩むという、無形の財産の相続であるとお話をしました。つまり、神の祝福に与るというのは、神の契約に入れられた民として生きることに他ならないのです。そこで、創世記の著者は、ヤコブが、それまで祖父アブラハムや父イサクを通して見聞きしていたことを、自ら体験していく、つまり神と直接出会って、神と共に生き、神の素晴らしさを味わっていく人生が始まったことを語っていくのです。
家を出て最初の夜、ヤコブは硬い石をまくらにして野宿しました。なんともやるせない思いを胸に、疲れもあって、いつの間にか眠ってしまったのでしょう。すると、そんな一人ぼっちのヤコブの側に、神が立たれるのです。そしてヤコブは夢を見ました。神は様々な方法で人にご自分の意思を伝えられると言いますが、ここでは夢をお用いになっています。そして、イサクが語り伝えた「神の祝福のことば」は気休めのことばではなく、真実であるという約束を繰り返し、極めつけに「わたしは、あなたに約束したことを成し遂げるまで、決してあなたを捨てない」と語るのです。
ヤコブは、人から聞かされて信じる信仰ではなく、直接神に語られて神を信じる経験をしました。ヤコブは朝早く目が覚めると、自分が枕にした石を立てて油を注いで聖別し、請願を立てました。それほど忘れられないはっきりとした夢であったのでしょう。彼はその夢を真剣に受け止めて、人生ここにかけていくと腹を決めていくのです。
信仰というのはそういうものです。神の言葉にかけていくと腹をくくる行為です。ヤコブは「神の祝福のことば」を聴いて、そうなればいいなあ、と淡い希望を抱いて生きたわけではありません。アブラハム同様に、神のことばはなる、と信じて生きる決心をしたのです。まさにヤコブはアブラハムの信仰を継承していくのです。
人の人生には様々なことが起こるものです。ヤコブのように、人の口車に乗せられて、窮地に立たせられることもあるものでしょう。自分がバカだったのだ、と思っても後の祭り、ただ一人で途方に暮れることもあるものでしょう。しかし、神はいると思えばいるし、いないと思えばいない、そのような存在ではなく、ヤコブのように「まことに主はこの場所におられる。それなのに、私はそれを知らなかった」という存在です。何の可能性もなき所、何の希望も見出しえない事態にあっても、神がともにいてくださるのです。この神に懸けていく人生に、私たちの思いを超えた可能性が開かれることを信じ受け入れていきたいものです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネルの登録、メンバーの登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Genesis 28: Jacob who dreamed a dream
- Jacob leaves home (28:1-9)
Jacob is in a tight spot because of a grudge against his mother for listening to him and deceiving his brother Esau. Even his mother Rebekah, who said, “Son, let the curse be on me for you” (27:13), could not protect Jacob. It is not clear how badly he felt his poor judgment at this time. At any rate, he flees to his uncle Laban, his mother’s hometown.
What strikes me here is the wish of his father Isaac. Isaac sends Jacob off, repeatedly, hoping that the blessings he has prayed for will be assured. He asks that he go out and find a good wife, and that God will make sure that he inherits Abraham’s blessing.
In a small, familial society, intense hatred can result in killing each other. It would have been a wise step to let Jacob out before the incident occurred. There would have been no telling what would happen next. He had no idea what would happen to the blessings he had prayed for. Perhaps that was the case. Isaac simply asks God to make his prayer for God’s blessing come true, and trusting God, he sends Jacob on his way.
Esau, on the other hand, knew how his parents treated Jacob and realized that his marriage was not to their liking. So he takes another wife from the house of Ishmael. What a tease! The Ishmaelites are the children and relatives of Abraham’s other wife, Keturah. As the remainder of a small familial society, this may have been the best one could do to keep the relationship well. The Bible does not tell us anything about the three families after that, but from the looks of things when Jacob returned, it seems that his parents and Esau went on to live independently. - Jacob meeting God (28:10-22)
At any rate, the interest of the author of Genesis turns from here to the life of Jacob, who received the legacy of “the blessed word of God. Yesterday, I told you that “God’s blessing” was not a tangible possession; rather, it was an inheritance of intangible property, of walking with God, trusting in “God’s blessed word. In other words, to receive God’s blessing is to live as a people who have been brought into God’s covenant. The author of Genesis tells us that Jacob began to experience for himself what he had seen and heard through his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac, in other words, he began to meet God directly, to live with God, and to experience the wonder of God.
The first night after leaving home, Jacob camped out in the field with a hard stone as a pillow. He must have fallen asleep before he knew it, feeling very tired and with a sense of helplessness in his heart. Then, God stood by Jacob’s lonesome side. Then Jacob had a dream. God is said to communicate His will to people in various ways, but here He uses a dream. He repeats the promise to Isaac that the “blessed word of God” that Isaac had spoken to him was not a comforting word, but the truth.
Jacob had an experience of believing in God not because he was told to do so by others, but because God spoke directly to him. When Jacob awoke early in the morning, he set up the stone that he had used as his pillow, anointed it with oil to sanctify it, and made his petition. It must have been such an unforgettable and clear dream. He took his dream seriously and decided to devote his life to it.
That is what faith is all about. It is an act of determination to hang on to God’s word. Jacob did not live his life with a faint hope that he would hear “the word of God’s blessing. Like Abraham, he made a decision to live his life believing that the word of God would come true. Jacob is indeed inheriting Abraham’s faith.
Many things happen in a person’s life. Like Jacob, we are sometimes put in a difficult situation by the mouthpieces of others. There will be times when you think you were a fool, but it is too late, and you are at a loss. But God is not like that; if you think He is there, He is there; if you think He is not there, He is not there. But I did not know it. God is with us even when there is no possibility, no hope. We need to believe and accept that in this life of commitment to God, there are possibilities that transcend our own expectations. God’s Word is true. God bless you all.
