イスラエルの民は、エジプトから救い出された後、約束の地を目指して旅を続けました。すでに十戒（5章）を受け取り、それを守るよう教えられていました（6章）。
しかし、ここで重要なことがあります。それは、約束の地に行くまでの40年間の荒野の旅が、ただの苦難ではなく、信仰を学ぶ大切な時間だったということです。
1．神の真実を知る（1-10節）
少し想像してみてください。
あなたは広大な砂漠を歩いています。強い太陽が照りつけ、地面の熱で焼けそうです。次の食事や飲み物がどこから来るのかもわかりません。しかし、目の前にはただ一つ、「神の約束の地に向かう」という目標だけがあります。このような状況で生き延びるには、神の約束を信じ、進み続けるしかありません。
これこそが、申命記8章に登場するイスラエルの民の状況でした。彼らは40年間、ただ迷っていたわけではありません。神はこの時間を使い、彼らに信仰を教えようとしたのです。そのポイントはこうです。
＊ 人間は本来どのようなものなのかを知る
＊神の命令に従うと、神の愛の関わりがあることを理解する
＊単なる「苦しい時間」ではなく、神と共に歩むことを学ぶ
＊神と共に物事を乗り越える経験によって、次のチャレンジに臨むことを学ぶ
イエス・キリストも、申命記8:3の言葉を引用しました。「人はパンだけで生きるのではない。」これは、食べ物だけでなく、神の言葉によって生きることが本当に大切であるという意味です。イスラエルの民も、これを心の奥深くまで理解する必要があったのです。
2．高慢と忘れることへの警告（11-20節）
8章の後半では、神がイスラエルの民に「成功した後の注意点」を語ります。イスラエルの民は、苦労を重ねて約束の地に入ります。しかし、神は彼らに警告しました。「定住し、人生が楽になったとき、苦労の教訓を忘れてはいけない。」
これは、私たちの人生にもあてはまる話です。人は富や成功を手にすると、それまでの苦労を忘れがちです。例えば、こんなことはないでしょうか？
＊ 大変な時期に助けてもらったことがあるのに、後でそれを忘れてしまう。
＊ 「私の努力のおかげで成功した」と思ってしまう。
申命記8章は、この人間の弱さを指摘します。
「心が高ぶり、神を忘れないように。」（14節）
「この富を築いたのは私の力だ」と思わないように。（17節）
神の導きによって得た祝福を、自分の努力の結果だと誤解してはいけません。どんなに努力して成功したと思っても、それは神のおかげなのです。努力は大切ですが、最終的に成功させ花を咲かせてくれるのは神の恵みです。旧約の民が、神とアブラハムの契約によって祝福されたように、私たちも神がキリストを通して契約を結んだために祝福されています。もし、私たちが祝福を受けたとき、それを神への感謝として受け取るならば、ますます神の恵みを受けることができます。しかし、自分の力だと考え始めると、その祝福は取り消されるのです（19-20節）。
3. 試練の中での信仰（イエスの従順）
イザヤ書53:7にある「彼は痛めつけられ、苦しんだが、口を開かなかった。」ということば、これは、神の御心に黙って従ったイエス・キリストの姿を示しています。この従順な姿勢こそ、私たちの人生に祝福をもたらします。もちろん、神が導いてくださる試練と、自分から飛び込んでしまった苦難は違います。ただ、自分からわからずに飛び込んだ苦難も、神の愛の配慮によって、神が導いてくださる試練になることはわかっておきましょう。
ともあれ、人生の困難の中で、神がどのように私たちに愛を持って関わってくださっているかを考えることは大切です。過去に神が助けてくださったことを思い出し、今の試練も乗り越えられると信じることが求められています。
そして、イエスがそうであったように、黙って神に従うことが、人生を前進させる道なのです。あなたが信仰を持って歩むとき、神の恵みが豊かに満ち溢れますように。ではまた明日、お会いしましょう。
Deuteronomy 8: Lessons from the Wilderness
After leaving Egypt, the people of Israel traveled toward the Promised Land. They had already received the Ten Commandments (Chapter 5) and learned how to follow them (Chapter 6).
But before reaching their destination, they spent 40 years in the wilderness. This was not just a difficult journey—it was a time to learn faith and trust in God.
1. Learning God’s Truth (Verses 1-10)
Imagine yourself walking through a vast desert. The sun is burning, the ground is hot, and you do not know where your next meal will come from. There are no stores, no easy solutions—only God’s promise that He will lead you to a better place.
This was the situation of the people of Israel in Deuteronomy 8. For 40 years, they walked through the wilderness. But God had a purpose—He was teaching them to trust Him.
Here are the key lessons:
Understand human weakness and depend on God.
Follow God’s commands and experience His love and care.
See the journey as a time of learning, not just suffering.
Trust God to provide and overcome challenges together.
Jesus also quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 when facing temptation in the wilderness:
“Man shall not live by bread alone.”
This means that life is not just about physical needs—it is about following God’s words and purpose. The people of Israel needed to learn this deeply.
2. Warning Against Pride and Forgetfulness (Verses 11-20)
In the second half of Deuteronomy 8, God warns Israel about what will happen after they reach the Promised Land.
They will settle, build homes, and life will become easier. But then, a danger arises:
They might forget the lessons learned in the wilderness.
This happens in real life too. When people become rich or successful, they sometimes forget:
The hard times that helped shape them.
The people who helped them.
The role of God’s guidance in their success.
Deuteronomy 8 warns:
“Do not become proud and forget the Lord your God” (Verse 14).
“Do not say in your heart, ‘I built this wealth by my own strength’” (Verse 17).
God gave Israel blessings and success, but they should never think it was only their hard work that made it possible. All success comes from God’s help.
In the Old Testament, Israel was blessed because of God’s promise to Abraham.
In the New Testament, we are blessed because of God’s covenant through Jesus Christ.
When we receive blessings, we should always give thanks to Jesus, because God’s love and faithfulness—not our own strength—brought success.
But if we forget and believe we succeeded by ourselves, we risk losing God’s blessings (Verses 19-20).
3. Faith in Trials (The Obedience of Jesus)
Isaiah 53:7 says:
“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth.”
This verse describes Jesus’ obedience to God’s will. He did not complain—He trusted God completely.
This teaches us an important lesson:
Obedience brings blessing.
Of course, there is a difference between trials sent by God and difficulties caused by our own choices. But even if we make mistakes, God can still guide us and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.
When facing trials, we should remember:
God has helped us before—He will help us again.
Like Jesus, we should trust God’s plan and keep moving forward.
Faith means obeying God, even when we don’t fully understand the situation.
When we walk by faith, God’s grace and blessings will fill our lives.
