1．主の怒り
10章の初めの4節は、9章の続きで、それは、イスラエル北王国に対する神の怒りを語っています。災いなるかな、「不義の掟」を定め、「不当な判決」を下している者たちよ、と。不思議なもので、いつの時代にあっても正義が力なのではなく、力が正義、権力を握った者が、自分の思うままに、物事を動かそうとすることがあります。そして正しい者が浮かばれない、そのような状況があるものです。しかし、正しいことをなさる神は、これらすべてにおいて、正しいさばきを遅らせることはありません。神は、このような社会の在り方に憤りも感ぜず、我関せずという方ではないのです（4節）。では、どのようにして神は裁きをつけようとなさるのか。5節からは、神の裁きの執行者となったアッシリアについて語るものです。
2．アッシリアの奢り
5節「ああ、アッシリア、わたしの怒りのむち」神は、アッシリアを、諸国を懲らしめる鞭として用いられると言います（5、6節）。しかし、7-11節、当のアッシリアは、そのように自分たちのことを考えませんでした。神は、アッシリアがそのように謙虚さを失い、高ぶっていることを理解しており、もしアッシリアがそのことに気づいて悔い改めないのなら、アッシリアもまたお裁きになる、と言います（12節）。カルノは、BC738年、カルケミシュはBC717年、ハマテはBC738年、アルパデはBC740年、サマリヤはBC721年、ダマスコはBC732年にそれぞれアッシリアに攻められて、滅ぼされた町々でした。そのアッシリアが、エルサレムをも攻め、これを陥落させ、エルサレムを守る方を、これまで陥落させた国々の偶像と同じように考え、自らを全能者のように考えるなら、神は、その思い上がりを罰せずにはおかないだろう、と言うわけです（18節）。
3．残りの者
20節以降は、アッシリアによって滅ぼされたユダ南王国の再生について語っています。アッシリアは確かに強い国でした。しかしその強さも、神が与えられたもの。ですから、神がそれをよしとせねば、アッシリアも力を失い、滅んでいく運命にあるのです。しかし、ユダ南王国は、いかに弱い国であろうとも、神がこれを再生させようと思われる限り、徹底的に滅ぼされることがあっても、またそこから起き上がってくるのです。
ですから20節、アッシリアに打たれたものの、そこには「残りの者」「逃れの者」がいて、再び、主の民の国を再生するとイザヤは言います。ここで注目すべきは「残りの者」が何であるかです。それは、捕虜としてバビロンに連れ去られた後、イザヤの預言を思い起こし、気づきを与えられて悔い改め、神に立ち返った者たち、そして、エルサレム再建のために戻ってくることができた者たちと言えます（21、22節）。
10章は、アッシリアの奢り（5-19節）、残りの者の救い（20-27節）、そしてさらなるアッシリアの進撃の勢い（28-32節）、にもかかわらず主にあって救いが起こる預言（33-34節）が語られています。大切な要点は、すべての決定権を持つのは神である。神が高めし、低めもする。人ではない。神が人も国も、時代も支配している、ことでしょう。しばしば人は他人の能力を羨み、自分の無能ぶりを嘆くものです。しかし、たとえ優れた能力が認められることがあっても、それは、神のみこころがよしとしただけで、奢り高ぶる者は、早晩、その名誉を失うことになります。正しいことをなさる神の前に謙虚になり、神はそれぞれに、必要なものを豊かに与えてくださっていることを覚えたいものです。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Isaiah 10: God both exalts and brings low
1. the wrath of the Lord
The first four verses of chapter 10 are a continuation of chapter 9, which speaks of God’s wrath against the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Woe to those who have established “unrighteous laws” and have given “unjust judgments,” he says. It is a strange thing, that in every age, justice is not power, but power is righteousness, and those who have power may try to move things as they see fit. And there are situations in which the righteous soul will not rest in peace. But God, who does what is right, does not delay righteous judgment in all of this. God is not indignant or indifferent to the state of society (v. 4). How then does God intend to bring judgment?
2. Arrogant of Assyria
God says that He will use Assyria as a whip to chasten the nations (vv. 5, 6). However, vv. 7-11, Assyria did not think of itself in that way. God says that He understands that Assyria has lost its humility and is exalted in such a way, and that if Assyria does not realize this and repent, He will judge Assyria as well (v. 12). Carno in 738 BC, Carchemish in 717 BC, Hamath in 738 BC, Arpadae in 740 BC, Samaria in 721 BC, and Damascus in 732 BC were cities that were attacked and destroyed by Assyria. If Assyria, then, should attack Jerusalem and cause it to fall, and should think of the One who defends Jerusalem as the idol of the nations that have fallen, as if He were the Almighty, then God will not fail to punish that hubris (v. 18).
3. the rest
Verses 20 and following speak of the rebirth of the southern kingdom of Judah, which was destroyed by Assyria. Assyria was indeed a strong nation. But that strength was also given by God. Therefore, if God did not approve of it, Assyria would lose its strength and be doomed to destruction. But the southern kingdom of Judah, however weak it may be, will rise again, even if it is thoroughly destroyed, as long as God wills to revive it.
So in verse 20, Isaiah says that although struck by Assyria, there will be a “remnant” or “escapees” there, who will once again regenerate the kingdom of the Lord’s people. What is noteworthy here is what the “remnant” is. It can be said to be those who, after being taken captive to Babylon, were reminded of Isaiah’s prophecy, were given notice, repented, and turned to God, and were able to return to rebuild Jerusalem (vv. 21, 22).
Chapter 10 speaks of the Assyrian delicacy (vv. 5-19), the salvation of the remnant (vv. 20-27), and the momentum of further Assyrian advances (vv. 28-32), and the prophecy of salvation occurring in the Lord despite this (vv. 33-34). The important main point is that God is the one who makes all decisions. God raises and lowers. Not man. God rules over people, nations, and eras. Often people envy the abilities of others and lament their own incompetence. However, even if one’s superior abilities are recognized, it is only because God’s will is good, and those who are proud and arrogant will lose their honor sooner or later. We should humble ourselves before God, who does what is right, and remember that God has given us each what we need in abundance. I wish you a good day today.
