1．背景
表題に出て来る「アラム・ナハライムやアラム・ツォバとの戦い」というのは、2サムエル記8:3-6に出てくる出来事です。ダビデが王となり、北東のユーフラテス川近くに遠征した時のこと、その隙をついてエドムとモアブが南方のユダに侵略しました。表題には1万2千人を打ち殺したときに、とありますが、サムエル記や歴代誌では1万8千人（2サムエル8:13、1歴代18:12）となっています。その違いは、戦争の期間をどこからどこまでとする計算の仕方の違いであったのか、写本の誤りであったのかは、よくわかっていません。
いずれにせよ、ダビデはヨアブを派遣し（1歴代誌19:6-9）この危機的事態に対処するわけですが、それは全く思いもよらぬ大敗でした。2サムエル記にも1歴代誌にも、甚大な被害を受けたとは書かれていませんが、実際には、3節、まるで不本意によろめかす酒を飲ませられたような、屈辱的な負け戦、惨敗であったとされます。
2．神にあって突き進む
考えてみれば、ダビデはサウルの執拗な攻撃から解放されたばかり、王となるやいなや、今度はその手腕を試される出来事に直面したのです。人生において試練や苦難は、尽きないと言うべきでしょう。乗り越えたと思ったら、また次の試練が押し寄せてくるのです。
しかしそれら一つ一つに落胆していてもしょうがないものでしょう。むしろ、絶えず神のことばに強められて、突き進んでいくのみです。実際、ダビデは逃げようとはしませんでした。ダビデは自分がこのような大敗を帰したのは、神の怒りによるもの、と考えました。しかしそうではなく、ダビデの力不足だったのです。大切な点です。なんでもかんでも、神や悪魔のせいにして、現実を受け止められないようであってはならないでしょう。物事に行き詰まることは、自分自身の問題だということもあるのです。しかし、たとえそうであっても神は優しいお方です。神に助けを求めるダビデに、神は「旗を授けられた」とあります。旧約聖書において旗は結束のシンボルです。神を恐れる旗印のもとに戦士が集められたということです。神はダビデに、人の助けを加えて、その力不足能力不足を補われたということです。
かつてイスラエルがエジプトを脱出した時のことを思い出してみましょう。モーセは「あなたが、「これらの異邦の民は私よりも多い。どうして彼らを追い払うことができるだろうか」と考える時にも、彼らを恐れてはならない。あなたの神、主がファラオに、また全エジプトになされたことをよく覚えていなければならない」（申命7:17、18）と語りました。たとえ私たちがどのようにしてこの問題を乗り越えられるのか、と思うことがあっても、恐れてはならず、誠実な神に信頼することです。神はダビデの力不足を補う助け手を送ってくださって、イスラエルの国の問題を解決してくださったのです。
大切な点です。神がダビデの訴えに応えられたのは、ダビデ個人を祝福するためではありませんでした。それ神がアブラハムを通して、その昔から約束された、イスラエル全体の利益を守るためでした。かつて主は、アブラハムに仰せられました。「わたしはあなたの子孫に、この地を与える。エジプトの川から、あの大川、ユーフラテス川まで。ケニ人、ケナズ人、カデモニ人、ヘテ人、ペリジ人、レファイム人、エモリ人、カナン人、ギルガシ人、エブス人を。」（創世記15:18-21）ダビデは、この約束を果たす歴史上のリーダーの一人に過ぎませんでした。そして彼はその責任を果たすにはあまりにも力不足ではあったのですが、彼が、自分の使命を理解し、神の助けを求めたところ、神は、ご自身の約束を果たすためにダビデの能力を補う多くの助け手を与えてくださったのです。神はダビデを成功させたのではなく、イスラエルを祝福してくださったのです（6-8節）。
そうであればこそ、「神にあって、私たちは力ある働きをします。神が、私たちの敵を踏みつけてくださいます」（12節）とも言いうるのです。信仰を個人化せず、このちっぽけな私でさえも、全人類に平和と祝福をもたらすために、お用いくださる神がおられることを覚える必要があるでしょう。リーダーは脚光を浴びやすいものですが、実際には能力不足のリーダーのもとに多くの強者が集められ、ただ主の人類に対するご計画が実現しているという現実があるものです。個人の社会的成功など誇るようなものではないということです。では、今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

1. background
The “battle with Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah” that appears in the title is an event from 2 Samuel 8:3-6. When David became king and led an expedition near the Euphrates River in the northeast, Edom and Moab took advantage of the opportunity to invade Judah in the south. The title says when they struck down 12,000 men, but Samuel and Chronicles give the number as 18,000 (2 Samuel 8:13; 1 Chronicles 18:12). It is not clear whether the difference was due to a difference in how the period of the war was calculated, or an error in the manuscripts.

We should not blame God or the devil for everything and be unable to accept the reality of the situation. Sometimes it is our own problem that we get stuck in things. But even so, God is kind. When David asked God for help, God “gave him a banner. In the Old Testament, the flag is a symbol of unity. It means that warriors were gathered under the banner of the fear of God. God compensated David for his lack of strength and ability by adding human help.
Let us remember what once happened to Israel when they escaped from Egypt. Moses said, “You said, ‘These Gentiles are more numerous than I am. Do not be afraid of them, even when you think, “How can I drive them away? You must remember well what the Lord your God has done to Pharaoh and to all Egypt” (Deut. 7:17, 18). Even though we may wonder how we can overcome this problem, we are not to fear, but to trust in God, who is faithful. God sent a helper to compensate for David’s lack of strength and to solve the problems of the nation of Israel.
An important point. God did not respond to David’s appeal to bless him personally. Rather, it was to protect the interests of Israel as a whole, which God had promised through Abraham all those years ago. The Lord once said to Abraham, “I will bless your offspring with this blessing. I will give this land to your descendants. From the river of Egypt to that great river, the Euphrates. And the Kenites, and the Kenazites, and the Kademites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaimites, and the Emorites, and the Canaanites, and the Gilgashites, and the Jebusites.” (Genesis 15:18-21) David was just one of the leaders in history to fulfill this promise. And although he was far too weak to fulfill that responsibility, when he understood his mission and sought God’s help, God gave him many helping hands to supplement David’s ability to fulfill His promises. God did not make David successful; He blessed Israel (vv. 6-8).
It is precisely because of this that we can say, “In God we do mighty works. God will trample down our enemies” (v. 12). We need not personalize our faith, but remember that there is a God who uses even this tiny me to bring peace and blessings to all mankind. Leaders are often in the limelight, but the reality is that many powerful people are gathered under leaders who lack ability, only to see the Lord’s plan for mankind come to fruition. Individual social success is not something to be proud of. I pray that today will be another good day.
