Chapter 2: God’s Compassion

1. just you

Traditionally, Song of Songs has been familiar to us as a book that speaks of God’s love for Christians. Before jumping to that conclusion, however, let us first savor the joy of Song of Songs as a sung drama.

The Lady of Shulam says, metaphorically, “I am the Rose of Sharon. In the third edition, this was translated as saffron. Sharon is a geographical term that refers to the plain extending from Joppa to the foot of Mount Carmel, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It was once a marshy area where crocodiles also lived, and the “Rose of Sharon” is thought to be the brightly colored red flowers that grew in clusters there (5:13). Also, lilies fill the valley. It seems to have been a flower resembling a lotus or a water lily, and not a white lily itself. Anyway, what the woman is trying to say here is that if she compares herself to a flower, she is an ordinary woman like any other. But the man who loves the woman says, “No, it is not true. But the man who loves the woman says, “No such thing; compared to you, other women are like thorns” (v. 2). Surely there is no man who does not think the woman he loves is the most beautiful woman in the world. The same is true for women. The man she loves is more wonderful than any other (v. 3). This is a somewhat itchy, private dialogue between two people. We might just dismiss it with a wry smile and say, “Love is a kind of sikness”.

 In verse 4, the two seem to be seeking each other more and more, and are growing in their desire to be united in mind and body. In ancient Israel, dried grapes, as well as apples, were used as a drug to enhance the enjoyment of lovemaking, and were enjoyed in addition to lovemaking. However, women are somewhat calm. Surely love is not a moment of momentary pleasure. It is a walk of mutual acceptance, support, and building up. It is a series of days of sharing everything with each other, joys and sorrows, pleasures and pains. It is a bond of deep communication and mutual support even in old age. Therefore, we should not unnecessarily “shake or stir up” (v.7) emotional feelings, but rather cherish the connection of the heart that grows naturally with time.

2. unstoppable love

 Note that from verse 8, the man is composing the song from the woman’s point of view, taking her heart into account. vv. 10-15 are the man’s words, but vv. 16 and 17 are again the man’s song, speaking for the woman’s heart. In other words, the man is speaking of love as he ponders the woman’s thoughts. What is important to note is that this poem was performed as an opera. Song of Songs is not a book to be read, but a script to be heard and seen. Therefore, this scene is where the spotlight is on the man, and the image of a man performing a monologue comes to mind. If you were a stage director, you would have this script in your hand, composing the scene and instructing the man on how they are in the throes of an unstoppable love sickness.

It is the season of spring festivals, when “winter is gone and the rains have passed away (v. 11)” and “the season of reaping has come (v. 12).” The “foxes and little foxes that ravage the vineyards (v. 15)” and the “young deer” grazing in the spring meadows, full of life (vv. 9, 17). Time goes on and on, and in between, there are many things that happen to the two of them, and there are those who stand in the way of their love, and then there are those who try to hinder their love, and then there are the two of them who are secretly in love. And the man’s dialogue, as he speaks of their private world, guessing the woman’s heart, speaks deeply of their unstoppable love. There will be about six more. I hope to savor the fun of Song of Songs even more. I wish you all a good day.
