1．クシュへの宣告
18章は、クシュへのメッセージです。クシュは古代エチオピアのことです。古代エチオピアは、現在のスーダンをも含めた広い地域のことを言いました。1節「羽コオロギ」は「羽をぶんぶんならすもの」の意味で、一説にツェツェバエと考えられています。それが多く生息している国です。2節「背の高い、はだのなめらかな国民」も、エチオピア人のことを言っています。彼らは古代世界では背の高い民族として知られていました。ただし「なめらかな」と訳されたことばは、「先のとがった剣が、いつでも使えるように光り磨き上げられている状態」を意味するとも言います。戦いのためによく武装されているということです。実際、BC715年、古代エチオピアはエジプトを征服、第25王朝を開きました。そして古代エチオピアは、エジプトを支配するやいなや、直ちに世界の覇者になるため反アッシリア同盟を作ろうと使者を諸国に送ったのです。その使者はエルサレムにもやってきて、同盟国にするにはさぞ頼もしく感じられたのでしょう。
しかし、イザヤは、人間のよくある一時の争乱に巻き込まれてはいけない、と言います。アッシリアの侵略を防ぐための同盟は、考えるにおよばない（3節）。人間的には得策に見えても、神が意図されないことは、起らないからだ、と言うのです。事実エチオピアは、BC663年アッシリアに征服されてしまいます。
2．神の時がある
では、何もしなくてもよいのか。アッシリアの脅威の前に手をこまねいていてよいのか、ユダの国の人々は心配したのでしょう。イザヤは言います。夏の照りつける太陽や朝の露のように、時間が止まったかのように思えることがあっても（4節）、神が手をこまねくことはない、と。むしろそれは「刈り入れ前」の静けさである。鎌を入れるちょうどよい時を、神は待っておられるのだ、と。
海に沈む夕日は、日が水平線に接するまでは、ゆっくり沈むように見えます。しかし一旦水平線に接すると、みるみる沈んでいくから不思議です。神の時も同じで、時来れば一挙にそれは動いていくのです。
そこで分脈としては、17:12-18:7を一つの区切りとして読むべきなのでしょう。つまり17:14は、具体的にアッシリアのエルサレム攻撃を指しています。彼らは、エルサレムを飲み尽くす勢いで迫ってきましたが、神の不思議な介入によって、退散させられました（2列王19:35）。ですから、2節、「すばやい使者よ、行け」と言うのは、同盟を結びに行け、ということではなく、神がエルサレムを守られたその事実を、エチオピアに知らせよ、ということでしょう。そうすれば、7節、エチオピアは、アッシリアを打ち砕く神を認め、ユダ南王国に同盟を求めるのではなく、貢ぎ物を携えてくるようになる、と言うわけです（7節）。実際、後にエチオピアは、BC663年アッシリアの攻撃を受けて滅んでいきます。
目の前の現実を見ながら、それに囚われることなく、さらに先のことを考える。それは、難しいことです。そして先のことを予測しても、その通りになるとは限りません。ただ、人は目先の現象を見て、最も良いと思われる物事に心を動かされやすい弱さがあるのは事実です。そして物事は最前と思われるとおりに進むとも限りません。大切なのは、すべてが神の支配下にあることを覚えることです。つまり、仮に、どんなに情勢が右に動いていくように見えても、神がお許しにならなければ、右には動きません。また右に動いたとしても、それは土壇場で覆されてしまいます。となれば、目に見えない神と親しみ、神の御心を知り、従うことが何よりも大切であり、神を信じる者であるなら、なおさらそうすべきなのです。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 18: A Faithful View
1. a pronouncement to Cush
Chapter 18 is a message to Cush. Cush is ancient Ethiopia. The ancient Ethiopia referred to a large area that included what is now Sudan. v.1 “winged cricket” means “something that ruffles its wings,” and is thought to be a tsetse fly. Verse 2, “tall, smooth-bodied people,” also refers to the Ethiopians. They were known in the ancient world as a tall people. However, the word translated “smooth” is also said to mean “a pointed sword, polished and shining, ready for use. It means well armed for battle. In fact, in 715 BC, ancient Ethiopia conquered Egypt and opened the 25th dynasty. As soon as Ethiopia conquered Egypt, it immediately sent messengers to the nations to form an anti-Assyrian alliance in order to become the world champion. The messengers came to Jerusalem, which must have seemed very encouraging to make an ally.
But Isaiah says that we must not get caught up in the common temporal strife of mankind. An alliance to prevent an Assyrian invasion is not to be considered (v. 3). For what God does not intend will not happen, even though it may seem humanly expedient. In fact, Ethiopia was conquered by Assyria in 663 BC.
2. there is a time for God
So, is there nothing to be done? The people of the land of Judah must have wondered if they should stand idly by in the face of the Assyrian threat. Isaiah says, “The summer sun and the morning dew are the best of times. Isaiah says that even though time may seem to stand still, like the summer sun or the morning dew (v. 4), God does not fold His arm. Rather, it is the stillness of “before the reaping”. God is waiting for just the right time to put in the sickle.
The sunset over the ocean appears to be slow until it touches the horizon. But once it touches the horizon, it sinks quickly and mysteriously. It is the same with God’s time. When the time comes, it moves at once.
So, as a context, 17:12-18:7 should be read as a break. In other words, 17:14 refers specifically to the Assyrian attack on Jerusalem. They came upon Jerusalem with a force that swallowed it up, but were driven back by God’s mysterious intervention (2 Kings 19:35). Thus, verse 2, “Go, swift messenger,” does not mean to go and make an alliance, but to let Ethiopia know that God has protected Jerusalem. Then, verse 7, Ethiopia would recognize God’s crushing of Assyria, and instead of seeking an alliance with the southern kingdom of Judah, it would come with tribute (v. 7). In fact, Ethiopia would later be attacked and destroyed by Assyria in 663 BC.
It is difficult to look at the reality in front of us and not get caught up in it, but to think further ahead. That is a difficult thing to do. And predicting what lies ahead does not necessarily mean that it will come to pass. But it is true that people have a weakness to look at immediate phenomena and be easily moved by what seems best. And things do not always turn out as they seem best. The important thing is to remember that everything is under God’s control. In other words, no matter how much things seem to be moving to the right, they will not move to the right unless God permits it. And even if it does, it will be overturned at the last minute. Therefore, it is most important to be close to the invisible God, to know and follow His will, and if you are a believer in God, you should do so even more than anything else. I pray that today will be another good day.
