1．静まり、見よ
1節、神は、「島々よ、わたしの前で静まれ。諸国の民よ、新しく力を得よ」と語ります。どうでしょう。希望がないな、と思う暗き世にあって、このように語り掛ける声がするとしたら。静かにその声の語ることに耳を澄ませてみましょう。そして、語られる神を仰ぎましょう。いつも、人の評価、噂話、そんなことに心を振り回され、萎縮し、うなだれている、もし、そのように思うところがあるならば、しばしそのような社会の喧騒から退いて、静まり、聖書を開いて神のことばに耳をじっと傾けてみるのです。神が何を語られているのか。
２節、「誰が一人の者を東から起こし、その行く先々で勝利を収めさせるのか」誰だろうと考えてみましょう。歴史的にトップに立っている、各国の首脳の顔を思い浮かべながら、どうしてあの人は力を得ているのか。ここでイザヤが語る「一人の者」については、アブラハム、ペルシヤの王クロス、種々の説があります。大切なことは、バビロンを倒したクロスにしても、イスラエルの祖となったアブラハムにしても、彼らがそのようなひとかどの人物になったのは、彼らの力によるのではなく、神によるものではないか、ということです。人を起こし、人に力を与えられる主なる神がいる。そしてその神は、木や石を削って神々しく作り上げた巷に見かける偶像ではありません（6、7節）。目には見えませんが、この天地と人をお造りになった、生きて力ある神です。
2．神の約束
その神がさらに語ることばに注目しましょう。10節。「恐れるな。わたしはあなたとともにいる。たじろぐな。わたしがあなたの神だから。わたしはあなたを強くし、あなたを助け、わたしの義の右の手で、あなたを守る。」神は、イザヤ以前の時代、アブラハムにもそう語りかけられました（創世記15:1）。神は昔も今も変わりはありません。ですから私たちにも同じように語り掛けています。後のイスラエル人は、このことばに心に刻んで、祖国再建の偉業を成し遂げました。私たちも同じように、望みがないと物事にへたり込んでおらず「荒野を水のある沢とし、砂漠の地を水の源とする」（18節）生きておられる神がいることを信ずべきでしょう。望みはあるのです。以前イスラエルに行った時に、テルアビブからエルサレムまで電車で向かいました。途中「杉、アカシヤ、ミルトス、オリーブ、もみの木、すずかけの木、檜」が生い茂る美しい森林地帯を通り抜けました。イスラエルの荒涼とした荒野とは別世界、神は荒野をこのように変えられるというのか、と思わされたことがあります。打ち破れ、廃れてしまった人生も、水と緑に溢れた人生となると神は語ります。
3．神の訴え
さて21節からは、偶像と偶像礼拝者に対する神の挑戦的なことばです。預言で実際に実現した例があるのなら、それをあげてみよ、と言います（22節）。そして25節から再び、神はご自身が歴史の主であることを明言します。25節の「北から起こされた人」についても、具体的にアブラハム、クロスを想定する二つの説があります。そして東も、北もパレスチナから見て侵略が起こる方位、と考える説もあります。いずれにせよ、大切な点は、神が人を起こすと言う事実なのでしょう。能力のある人物が登場してくるのではない、神がそれを起こすのです。どうでしょう、このように語り掛け、約束し、訴えられる神がいます。あなたはもう終わったのではないし、一人でもない。偶像ではなく、まことの神をもとめて、聖書を開き、神の声に聴きなさいと言うのです。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 41 – Look Up to Heaven
1. be still and behold
In verse 1, God says, “Be still before me, O islands. Let the peoples of the nations receive new strength. What do you think? What if there is a voice speaking to us like this in the midst of a dark world where we think there is no hope? Let us quietly listen to what that voice is saying. Let us look up to the God who speaks. If you find your mind always being swept away, shriveled up, and nodding off by the evaluations of others, gossip, and the like, then take a moment from the hustle and bustle of society, be still, open your Bible, and listen intently to the Word of God. What is God saying?
Consider verse 2, “Who will raise up a man from the east and make him victorious wherever he goes?” Who is it? Think of the faces of the leaders of the nations, who are at the top historically, and how does that person gain power? There are various theories about the “one” Isaiah speaks of here, such as Abraham, King Cross of Persia, and many others. What is important is that whether it is Cross who defeated Babylon or Abraham who became the founder of Israel, it is not by their own strength but by God that they became such a man. There is a Lord God who raises people up and gives them strength. And that God is not an idol seen on the street, carved out of wood or stone and made into a godly figure (vv. 6, 7). He is a living and powerful God, invisible to the eye, who made heaven and earth and man.
2. God’s Promises
Notice what God says further in verse 10: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. Do not be afraid. I am with you. Do not falter, for I am your God. For I am the LORD your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will defend you with the right hand of my righteousness.” God spoke this to Abraham in the days before Isaiah (Genesis 15:1). God was and is the same. Therefore, He speaks to us in the same way. The later Israelites took these words to heart and accomplished the great task of rebuilding their homeland. We, too, should not be content with the hopelessness of things, but trust that there is a living God who “makes the wilderness a stream of water and the desert a source of water” (v. 18). There is hope. When I visited Israel before, I took the train from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. On the way, we passed through a beautiful forested area with “cedars, acacias, myrtos, olives, fir trees, spruce trees, and cypresses. It was a different world from the desolate wilderness of Israel, and I once wondered if God could transform the wilderness in this way. God tells us that even a life that has been beaten down and ruined can become a life overflowing with water and greenery.
3. the appeal of God
Now beginning in verse 21 are God’s challenging words to idols and idolaters. He says, “If you have an example of a prophecy that has actually come true, give it to me” (v. 22). Then, beginning in verse 25, God again declares that He is the Lord of history, and there are two theories about the “man raised up from the north” in verse 25, one that specifically posits Abraham and the other Cross. And some believe that both the east and the north are the directions in which the invasion will take place from Palestine. In any case, the important point is probably the fact that God raises people. It is not that a competent person will appear; God will cause it to happen. How about this, there is a God who speaks, promises, and appeals in this way. You are not finished, and you are not alone. He says, “Seek not idols, but the true God; open your Bible and listen to His voice. I wish you a good day today.
