1．恐れるな
先の42章では、二つの歌、「しもべの歌」（42:1-9）と「嘆きの歌」（42:18⁻25）を読みました。今日の43章は、それらを踏まえたものです。神を神として敬うこともなく、退けてきたイスラエルに、神は変わらぬ愛を語り掛けています。神のその愛の深さは、どこから来るのか。まず気づかされることは、神が父であり、創造者である、ということです（1節）。
2節、わずか6行のフレーズの中に、イザヤは、ノアの洪水、航海渡渉、ヨルダン渡河など、イスラエルの歴史に起こった、数々の驚くべき神の御業をイメージさせます。そして、それらを取り上げる真意は、そのような驚くべき御業を行う創造者である神が、「あなたとともにいる」、あなたを愛している、ということです。そして、あなたのために戦われる、と言うことです。3節は、エジプトがペルシアに滅ぼされた歴史的出来事を想定しているようです。ともあれ神はイスラエルを大切にし（4節）、これを特別に扱われてきました。それは選ばれた民が、神ご自身の何であるかを知るためでした（10節）。まず、神を深く味わい知ること、それが、神がイスラエルに対して持っておられる願いであり、それは、同時に、神が唯一であり、救い主であり、全能者であることを証することになるのです。この神以外に救いはない、と。
2．バビロン滅亡の予告
13、14節は、バビロン滅亡に関する予告です。愛するイスラエルのために、積極的に戦われる神の姿がイメージされています。しかもそれは一度だけではありません。歴史的に繰り返されてきた事実だと言うかのように、16、17節、エジプトの紅海を、イスラエル人が渡った歴史的事件が取り上げられます。
18節「先のことに心を留めるな。昔のことに目を留めるな。見よ、わたしは新しいことを行う」神のなさることは常に人の思いを遥かに超えています（19節）。そうであればこそ、神の栄誉を語り伝えずにはいられない（21節）、ということでしょう。神を味わい知るならば、神を伝えずにはいられないのです。宣教は、心の確信として自然に出てくるものです。
22節以下は、そのような偉大な創造主の配慮を受けながら、その神に背を向け続けてきたイスラエルが見捨てられずにいること、そしてそれは、全く神の愛と恵みに基づいていることを語ります。神がイスラエルを選ばれたのは不合理な愛の結果です。つまり、神は理屈なしにイスラエルを愛してこられたのです。何ら神の期待通りに生きることもなく、反逆を繰り返すイスラエルを赦すのは、彼らの善い行いのため、彼らの何かの素晴らしい業績のため、彼らの人知れぬ苦労のためというのではありません（25節）。ただ神は、自らが生み出したイスラエル（21節）を、愛しておられるというわけです。
このイザヤ書を、メシヤ預言として解釈した初代教会は、明らかにこの愛が、私たちにも同様に注がれていることを確信していました。恐れるな。主は、あなたとともにいる。あなたに対する主の愛は深い、と。そして主の愛を味わえば、自然に神を語ること、つまり宣教もなされていくのです。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 43: The Love of the Maker
1. do not be afraid
In the previous chapter 42, we read two songs, the Song of the Servant (42:1-9) and the Song of Lamentations (42:18-25). Today’s chapter 43 builds on them. God speaks of His abiding love to Israel, which has not honored Him as God and has retreated. Where does the depth of that love of God come from? The first thing we notice is that God is Father and Creator (v. 1).
In verse 2, a phrase of only six lines, Isaiah conjures up images of many amazing acts of God in Israel’s history, including Noah’s flood, the navigational crossing, and the crossing of the Jordan. And the real point of taking them up is that God, the creator of such marvelous deeds, is “with you” and loves you. Verse 3 seems to be referring to the historical event of the destruction of Egypt by Persia. At any rate, God cares for Israel (v. 4) and has dealt with it in a special way. God has always cared for Israel (v. 4) and treated it specially, so that His chosen people might know what God Himself is (v. 10). First, to taste and know God deeply, which is the desire that God has for Israel, and at the same time to testify that He is the One, the Savior, and the Almighty. There is no salvation but in Him.
2. the prediction of Babylon’s destruction
Verses 13 and 14 are a warning about the destruction of Babylon. It is an image of a God who will actively fight for His beloved Israel. And it is not just once. In verses 16 and 17, the historical incident of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea in Egypt is mentioned, as if to say that this is a fact that has historically been repeated.
Verse 18: “Do not set your minds on what is ahead. Do not fix your eyes on the old things. Behold, I will do new things.” What God does is always far beyond the thoughts of man (v. 19). This being the case, we cannot help but speak of God’s honor (v. 21). If we taste and know God, we cannot help but tell of Him. Proclamation comes naturally as a conviction of the heart.
Verse 22 and following speaks of the fact that Israel, which has continued to turn its back on its God while receiving the care of such a great Creator, has not been abandoned, and that this is based entirely on God’s love and grace. God’s choice of Israel is the result of irrational love. In other words, God has loved Israel without reason. It is not because of their good deeds, or because of some great achievement of theirs, or because of their unacknowledged hardships, that He forgives Israel, who never lived up to God’s expectations and repeatedly rebelled (v. 25). God simply loves Israel (v. 21), whom He has brought into existence.
The early church, which interpreted Isaiah as a Messianic prophecy, was clearly convinced that this love was poured out to us as well. Do not be afraid. The Lord is with you. His love for you is deep. And when we experience His love, we will naturally speak of God, that is, we will preach. I pray that you will have a good day today.
