イザヤ書9章 ひとりのみどりごが生まれる
1．メシヤ預言
2節「やみの中を歩んでいた民は、大きな光を見た」。人が通る闇は、しばしば一瞬では終わらないものでしょう。それは、何年も、何十年も、いやこのまま人生が終わってしまうのではないか、と思うほどに長く、深い闇であったりするものです。そして人は疲れ、物事に諦めを感じ、諦めてはいけないと思いつつも、もはや気力がついていかないと思うこともあるものでしょう。
ユダ南王国に起こる悲惨な未来の預言（8:19-22）に続いて語られるのは、その後の輝かしい希望です（9:2-7）。戦乱が止み、平和が訪れる未来です。その平和をもたらす者の特徴が描かれています。彼は「不思議な助言者」と呼ばれます。人間的なものを遙かに超えた、優れた知恵を提供する方、つまり、アハズのように先を見誤り、国家を滅びに至らせたような浅はかな者ではないのです。そして「力ある神」つまり、神そのものです。そして「永遠の父」。人間の支配は、一時にすぎませんが、この王は、永続にその主権を保持される方。しかも父としての配慮のある、愛とまことによって国を治めるお方です。「平和の君」という言い方は、完全な統治を実現するお方であるということです。そのお方の熱心さによって、ユダ南王国には、また新しい未来が開ける、というわけです。
2．預言の繰り返し
さて8節から、イザヤは、ユダ南王国ではなく、エフライム、つまりイスラエル北王国に向かって語っています。エフライムは北王国で最も重要な部族で、しばしばイスラエル北王国の代名詞とされます。エフライムは高ぶり、神を信頼せず、むしろ人間の力を信じました。そして彼らは、イザヤの預言に対して、国が打ち破られ、滅ぼされるなら、もっと立派に再建してみせると豪語するのです。「いちじく桑」が倒されたならもっと高価な「杉の木」を植えて、素晴らしい町に変えてみせると自信たっぷりでした（10節）。しかし、事の勝敗を決するのは神です。神は、「レツィンに敵対する者たち」つまりエフライムに対する敵対者としてさらに強いアッシリヤを起こし、エフライムを裁くと語られます。
しかし12節、そんな警告も、北王国には全く効き目がありません。13節「頭」と「なつめやし」は貴族、「尾」と「葦」は庶民を象徴することばです。つまりすべての者が、神の裁きを受け苦しい目に遭いながら決して悔い改めようとしない。そして国家を指導する者が、国民すべてを滅亡へと道ずれにしていく（16節）。こうして神の御怒りは、北王国すべての者に留まり（17節）、やがて国は散々な事態を迎えることになるだろうと言います（20、21節）。
確かに、この預言どおりに、やがてイスラエルは、アッシリアに国を破壊され、国民は強制移住で諸国に散らされ消滅してしまいます。他方ユダ南王国は、それからさらに後のこと、バビロンに同じように国を滅ぼされ、国民も散らされたにも関わらず、神の約束のとおりに再びエルサレムに国を再建するのです。後の時代の人々に、このイザヤの預言が希望となり、国を再建する力となったことに間違いはありません。実際には、この預言は、さらに後の時代のイエス・キリストの誕生を預言しているとするのが、一般的な解釈ですが、当時の人々が、イエス・キリストならぬ救い主を信じて、国の再建へと向かった、神のことばを与えられることの恵みを教えられるところです。人生諦めそうな思いになったら、また、諦める前に力が尽きそうと思うことがあるなら、まず神のことばを開くことでしょう。そして昔も今も変わらず生きて、この世界の万物を支配しておられる、神の励ましを受けたいところです。今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Isaiah 9: A Child is Born
1. Messiah Prophecy
Verse 2: “The people who were walking in darkness saw a great light. The darkness through which one passes will often not be over in a moment. It can be a darkness so long and deep that one wonders if it will last for years, decades, or even life itself. And then one gets tired, feels like giving up, and thinks that one should not give up, but that one no longer has the energy to do so.
The prophecy of a disastrous future for the southern kingdom of Judah (8:19-22) is followed by a glorious hope (9:2-7). It is a future in which warfare will cease and peace will prevail. The characteristics of the one who will bring that peace are described. He is called the “Wonderful Counselor. He is not a shallow man like Ahaz, who misjudged the future and brought the nation to ruin. And the “Mighty God,” i.e., God Himself. And the “Eternal Father. Human rule is only temporary, but this King is the One who retains His sovereignty in perpetuity. He is the one who rules the nation with fatherly care, in love, and in truth. The phrase “Lord of Peace” means that he is the one who will bring about a perfect reign. Through his zeal, a new future opens up for the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
2. repetition of prophecy
Now, beginning in verse 8, Isaiah is addressing Ephraim, the northern kingdom of Israel, not the southern kingdom of Judah. Ephraim is the most important tribe in the Northern Kingdom and is often synonymous with the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Ephraim exalted themselves and did not trust in God, but rather in the power of men. They responded to Isaiah’s prophecy by saying that if the nation was to be defeated and destroyed, they would rebuild it better. They were confident that if the “fig mulberry tree” was destroyed, they would plant more expensive “cedar trees” and turn it into a great city (v. 10). But it is God who decides who wins or loses. God says that He will raise up a stronger Assyrian as an adversary against Ephraim, “those who are against Rezin,” and He will judge Ephraim.
But verse 12, such warnings will have no effect on the Northern Kingdom. v. 13, “head” and “nightshade” are words that symbolize the nobility, while “tail” and “reed” symbolize the common people. In other words, all will suffer the judgment of God and never repent. And those who lead the nation lead all the people astray to destruction (v. 16). Thus God’s wrath will remain on all the northern kingdom (v. 17), and the nation will soon be scattered (vv. 20, 21), he says.
Indeed, in accordance with this prophecy, Israel will be destroyed by Assyria, and its people will be scattered among the nations in a forced exodus. On the other hand, the Southern Kingdom of Judah would later rebuild its kingdom in Jerusalem, as God had promised, even though Babylon had similarly destroyed the kingdom and scattered its people. There is no doubt that Isaiah’s prophecy gave hope and strength to the people of the latter days to rebuild their nation. In fact, the common interpretation is that this prophecy prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ in a later time, but it is a lesson in the grace of being given the Word of God that the people of that time believed in a Savior other than Jesus Christ and went on to rebuild their nation. Whenever you feel like giving up on life, or if you ever feel like your strength is about to run out before you give up, the first thing you should do is open the Word of God. Then we should receive encouragement from God, who lived in the past and still lives today, and who rules over all things in this world. I pray that today will be another good day.
