1．偶像を捨てよ
イスラエルの指導者たちがエゼキエルのもとにやってきて、助言を求めています。彼らはどうやら、エゼキエルのもとに度々足を運んだようです（8:1、20:1）。まだまだバビロン捕囚は続き、この先どうなるのか、と彼らの心は落ち着きませんでした。次から次と捕虜が連れてこられ、結果、エルサレムは完全に消滅してしまい、自分たちは帰るべき祖国を失ってしまうのか、それともかつてエレミヤに預言されたとおりに、いつしか祖国に戻って国を再建する時が来るのか。彼らは、思案していたのです。
そのように助言を求めてくる指導者に、エゼキエルは神のことばを伝えます。4節、いつもだったら偶像に心を向け、神のことばなど求めもしないあなたがたなのに、今、神のことばを求めるとはどうしたことか、と。6節、もし、神のことばを真剣に聞きたいのなら、一切の偶像を捨て、ただ神にだけ心を向けよ、と。確かにエゼキエルが言うとおりです。例えていえば、キリスト教信仰をもちながらも、普段は、聖書を本棚に終い込んで開こうともせず、礼拝にも気の向くままに通っている、そして占いや風水など様々な宗教的な慣習にも心を許しているような人が、いざ、時代が悪くなり、生活に困り、木や石で出来た偶像はどうも当てにならないと、まことの神様を求めて、まことの神様のおことばを頂きたいとやってくるわけです。普段からいつでも神のことばは聞けるのに、どうしてこんな時に限って来るのか、と言うわけです。けれども、神は、そこで「わたしは知らん」とは言わないのです。むしろ、悔い改めて偶像を捨てて、まことの神である主に心を定めなさい、と言うのです（6節）。さもなくば、あなたは偶像と共に亡びるだけである、と（7節）。
2．自分の救いと向き合う
そして神は、主に心を定めず悔い改めない偶像崇拝者を四つの災い、つまり飢饉、悪い獣、剣、疫病で裁くと言います。神を真実に求める義人は、このような災いに巻き込まれることはありません（14節）。ノア、ダニエル、ヨブはその義人の代表例です。ただし、この義人にあやかって人が助かるということもありません。義人はただその信仰によって自分を救うのみなのです（18節）。救いも霊的な成長も個々人の責任によるのです。誰も人の信仰を生きてくれる人はいません。牧師が、父や母が、あるいは伴侶が助けてくれる、そういうものではありません。ただ、個人一人ひとりが神の前にその信仰のあり様を問われるのです。私は、偽預言者に惑わされたと偽預言者のせいにできるわけでもなく、偽預言者を見分けようとしなかった、その人自身の信仰の姿勢が問われるのです。
6節、新改訳聖書第三版では「悔い改めよ（6節）」でした。しかし、ヘブル語の原語では後悔する、申し訳なく思うということばではなくて、立ち返る、向きを変える、という意味のことばが使われています。そこで、新しい、新改訳2017の訳では「立ち返れ」となっています。バビロンに捕虜となって連れて来られた人々は、具体的にバビロンの偶像を拝んでいたわけではありません。しかし、心の中にイスラエルの神が第一とはなっていない人々でした。つまり、自称クリスチャン、形ばかり教会に通い、聖書も購入して持ってはいるけど、三度の食前の時ですら神に感謝の祈りも献げることもない、つまり普段は神に心を向けることもない、信仰はお飾りという人々です。そのような現実は間違っていたと認めて、そこから神を第一とした生活に「立ち返る」ことが求められているのです。
神は裁かれるお方ですが、むげに人を滅ぼされようとするお方ではありません。ご自分の義を示されるお方です。ですから、神の前に正しく歩んでいるならば、逆に、神の裁きに慰めを見出すことにもなります（22節）。私たちが神の前にどうあるか、ただ一人神の前に心探られた時に、私たちがどうあるのか、が問題です。ですから常日頃、聖書を開き、神の声に耳を傾け、神のことばを喜び、神を大事にする生活をしていれば、何も恐れることはないのです。神の前に真実な生き方をする者は、その義のゆえに自らを救うことになります。神は正しいお方であると信頼して歩ませていただきましょう。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 14: Accusations against hidden idols (14:1-11)
1. cast away idols
The leaders of Israel come to Ezekiel for advice. They apparently visited Ezekiel often (8:1, 20:1). The Babylonian captivity was still going on, and their minds were restless as to what would happen next. Would Jerusalem be completely destroyed and they would lose their homeland to which they should return, or would the time come when they would return to their homeland and rebuild their nation, as Jeremiah had once prophesied? They were pondering.
Ezekiel tells the leader, “How is it that you, who normally turn your hearts to idols and do not seek the word of God, are now seeking the word of God? If you want to hear the Word of God seriously, you should leave all idols behind and set your heart on God alone. Ezekiel is certainly right. For example, a person who is a Christian, but usually keeps his Bible on a bookshelf and does not open it, attends worship services as he pleases, and is open to various religious practices such as fortune-telling and feng shui, but when times get bad and life becomes difficult, he realizes that idols made of wood and stone are useless, and he turns to God alone. They realize that idols made of wood and stone cannot be relied upon, and they come seeking the true God and His Word. In other words, God says that it is strange that they seek Him only at a time like this, when they can hear His Word at any time. But God does not say, “I do not know. Rather, he tells them to repent, forsake their idols, and fix their minds on the Lord, the true God (v. 6). Otherwise, he says, you will only perish with your idols (v. 7).

God then says that He will judge idolaters who do not set their hearts on the Lord and do not repent with the four plagues: famine, wicked beasts, sword, and pestilence. The righteous who seek God in truth will not be caught up in these plagues (v. 14). Noah, Daniel, and Job are examples of such righteous people. However, there is no way that a person can be saved by this righteous person. The righteous only save themselves by their faith (v. 18). Both salvation and spiritual growth are the responsibility of the individual. No one can live a person’s faith. It is not something that a pastor, father or mother, or spouse can help you with. It is just that each individual is challenged by the state of his or her faith before God. I cannot blame the false prophet for misleading me, nor can I blame the false prophet for misleading me, but the person’s own attitude of faith, which did not try to discern the false prophet, will be questioned.
Verse 6, in the third edition of the Shin kai-yaku, was “Repent (verse 6). In the original Hebrew, however, the word is not “repent” or “be sorry,” but “turn around.” So the newer, Shin kai-Yaku 2017 translation is “turn around. Those who were brought into captivity to Babylon were not specifically worshipping the idols of Babylon. However, they were people who did not put the God of Israel first in their hearts. In other words, they were people who called themselves Christians, who went to church only in form, who purchased Bibles but did not offer prayers of thanksgiving to God even at the three meal times before meals, in other words, they did not usually turn their hearts to God. They are required to admit that such a reality is wrong and “turn back” to a life that puts God first.
God is one who judges, but He is not one who seeks to destroy people unnecessarily. He is the One who demonstrates His righteousness. Therefore, if we are walking righteously before God, we will find comfort in His judgment (v. 22). The question is how we are before God, when we are searched before Him alone. Therefore, if we open our Bibles on a regular basis, listen to God’s voice, rejoice in His Word, and live a life that values Him, we have nothing to fear. Those who live true lives before God will save themselves because of their righteousness. Let us walk trusting that God is righteous. I pray that today will be another good day.
