1．預言者エゼキエル
神は、エゼキエルに語りかけられました。「人の子よ、自分の足で立て。わたしがあなたに語る」（2節）。「人の子」は、イエスが好んで用いた称号です。それは、エゼキエルが神に造られた被造物に過ぎず、「人間のような姿」をした天使的な生き物（1:5）とは違うことを意味しています。神に召し出されたエゼキエルは特別な存在ではなく、只の人間である、ということです（2節）。パウロ的に言えば「私たちは、この宝を土の器の中に入れています。それは、この測り知れない力が神のものであって、私たちから出たものでないことが明らかにされるためです」（2コリント4:7）ということでしょう。しかもエゼキエル書を読み進んでいくと、エゼキエルほど不器用な人間はいない、と思わされます。神のメッセージを効果的に伝えようとするのなら、もっと違う人を神は選ぶべきではないか、と思わされるような人です。
実に、偉大な神の働きは、人の能力よりも、全く神のあわれみと助けによってこそ、進められるものなのでしょう。そのような意味で言えば、私は牧師、伝道師も同じだと思います。牧師、伝道師がその職務を進めていけるのは、能力よりも召しの問題です。求められるべき働き人は、この世的に能力のある人ではなく、地味であっても、只神のみことばの召しに忠実に生きる人です。今の日本の宣教に求められているのは、そのような人なのでしょう。
2．恐れるな
神は、エゼキエルが語る相手の特徴を語っています。３節、「人の子よ。わたしはあなたをイスラエルの民に、わたしに反抗する国民に遣わす」４節、「彼らは厚かましく、頑なである」。これは彼の時代の話ではありません。今の時代も同じような状況があるものでしょう。聖書をそのまま語り伝えても、反感を向けてくる人、はっきり物事を伝えても、全く聞いていないかのように振舞う人、いやそれ以上に、信仰生活や教会生活について、自己流の考えをごり押ししてくる人、このような人は現代においても珍しくはありません。むしろその方が普通なのかもしれません。
神は語ります。「聞く聞かないに関わりなく」語らなければならない、と。何とも大変な命令です。神のことばに素直に耳を傾ける者は少なく、ましてそれを行おうとする者もいない。信仰は付け足しで、お飾りのような人に語れ、と言うのです。神のことばに生きるために、自分の生活を変えていく、など決して考えもしなし、行おうともしない頑なな人々に語らなければならないのです。
エゼキエルは不器用ではあっても鈍感な人ではなかったでしょう。そして彼は、祭司の子でしたから、これまで神の御言葉に忠実な預言者たちがどのように扱われてきたのかも、よく理解していたと思われます。ですから、神が語ることば「彼らや、彼らのことばを恐れるな」「恐れるな」「そのことばを恐れるな」「彼らの顔におびえるな。」は、エゼキエルのおじまどう心を説得することばであったと言えます。神の器を立たせようとする神の熱心な姿がそこにあるのです。そのような意味で、今の時代においても、牧師の働きにしり込みする人々に、神は「恐れるな」「彼らの顔におびえるな」と語りかけておられることを覚えましょう。
「あなたの口を大きく開けて、私があなたに与えるものを食べよ（8節）。」牧師、伝道師の働きは、その働きに乗じて自己実現を考えるようなものではありません。召してくださる神との関わりがすべてなのです。ですから神が勧められることにしっかり応答することです。神は、自ら授ける者をしっかり受け止めよ、と語ります。それは「嘆きと、うめきと、悲痛に満ちた」内容の巻物でした。しかし、明日の３章で見るように、それは、エゼキエルにとっては蜜のように甘いものであったのです。不思議です。というのも、一見、「嘆きと、うめきと、悲痛に満ちた」内容であっても、そこには同時に、神のあわれみに満ちたことばが織り交ぜられていたことを、彼はよく理解したからなのでしょう。神のことばは、一見刺々しい裁きのことばのようでありながら、わかる人にはわかる、甘い蜜のことばです。甘さがわかる人々を見つけ出す、それが、牧師、伝道師の働きのまた難しさであるのかもしれません。では今日もよき一日であるように祈ります。

1. the prophet Ezekiel
God spoke to Ezekiel. Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak to you” (v. 2). I will speak to you” (v. 2). Son of Man” is a favorite title of Jesus. It implies that Ezekiel is only a creature made by God, not an angelic creature “in human likeness” (1:5). It means that Ezekiel, called by God, is not special, but a mere mortal (v. 2). In Pauline terms, “We have this treasure in earthen vessels. We are putting this treasure in earthen vessels so that it may be revealed that this immeasurable power is of God and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). Moreover, as one reads through the book of Ezekiel, one is reminded that no one is as clumsy as Ezekiel. He is the kind of person that God should have chosen differently if he wanted to convey God’s message effectively.
Indeed, the great work of God is carried out more by God’s mercy and help than by man’s ability. In this sense, I believe the same is true for pastors and evangelists. It is a matter of calling rather than ability that enables pastors and evangelists to advance in their work. The workers who should be sought after are not those who have worldly abilities, but those who live faithfully according to the call of God’s Word, even if they are humble. It is this kind of person who is needed for missions in Japan today.
2. do not be afraid
God is speaking of the characteristics of the person to whom Ezekiel is speaking: verse 3, “Son of man, I will make you a nation of Israel, and I will make you a people of Israel. I will send you to the people of Israel, to the nation that rebels against me.” v. 4, “They are thick-skinned and stubborn.” This is not the story of his time. There are probably similar situations in our time. It is not uncommon today for people to be antagonistic when we preach the Bible as it is, to act as if they are not listening even when we clearly communicate things, or even more so, to push their own ideas about faith and church life. In fact, it is probably more normal.
God speaks. God tells us that we must speak “whether we hear or not. This is a very serious command. Few listen to God’s word, much less do anything about it. He tells us to speak to those for whom faith is an add-on, a decoration. We must speak to the stubborn who will never think or do anything to change their lives in order to live God’s Word.
Ezekiel may have been clumsy, but he was not insensitive. And since he was the son of a priest, he would have understood how prophets who were faithful to God’s Word had been treated in the past. Thus, God’s words, “Fear not them, nor their words, nor their words, nor their words, nor be afraid of their faces.” were words of persuasion to Ezekiel’s faltering heart. This is God’s earnest desire to make His vessels stand. In this sense, let us remember that even in this day and age, God tells those who shy away from pastoral ministry, “Do not be afraid” and “Do not be frightened in their faces.
Open wide your mouth and eat what I give you (v. 8).” The ministry of a pastor or evangelist is not one in which one thinks of self-fulfillment as a way to take advantage of the ministry. It is all about relationship with God who calls us. Therefore, we must respond firmly to what God recommends. God tells us to receive those whom He gives. The first chapter of the book of Revelation was written in the year 1830, a scroll “full of lamentation, groaning, and woe,” yet, as we will see tomorrow in chapter 3, it was as sweet as honey to Ezekiel. It is strange. For he understood that even though at first glance it was “full of lamentation, groaning, and woe,” it was at the same time interwoven with the compassionate words of God. God’s words are words of sweet nectar, seemingly stinging words of judgment, but understood by those who understand. Finding people who understand the sweetness of God’s word is perhaps the most difficult part of the work of a pastor or evangelist. I pray that you have a good day today.
