本日からエレミヤ書に入ります。この書も52章と長いですが、ぜひ、読み切るというのではなくて、読みを深める努力をしてまいりましょう。そうすれば、聖書を読むのが当たり前のこと、欠かせないことになっている自分に気づかされるはずです。
1．エレミヤ書の背景
この書の著者エレミヤですが、彼の名エレミヤは、ヘブル語で「主は高められる」を意味しています。彼は、エルサレムの北東約4キロに位置する寒村、アナトテの町に住んでいた祭司の子でした。BC627年に神の啓示を受け、約50年に渡って預言活動を行いました。
先に読んだイザヤ書の時代背景は、アッシリア帝国が世界を支配する時代でした。しかし今や、世界の支配者は、アッシリアではなくバビロンでした。アッシリア帝国は、BC633年アッシュール・バーン・アプリ王の死後、次第に弱体化し、BC605年カルケミシュの戦いにおいて、ネブカデネザル王が率いるバビロン軍に破れ、滅んでいました。
そのような状況下で、ユダ南王国のエホヤキム王は、エジプトの助けを借りて、バビロンからの独立を企てようとしていたのです。しかしその試みはBC596年に失敗し、エホヤキム王は最初の捕囚民としてバビロンに連れ去られ、ゼデキヤが王となります。しかしそれはもはや傀儡政権というべきもの、ユダ南王国は、実質バビロン帝国に吸収合併されてしまったのです。それでもユダ南王国内の反バビロン派、いわゆる親エジプト派の動きは収まらずにいたのです。そこでエレミヤは、親エジプト派の行動が、神のみこころに反し、さらなる悲劇につながると預言します。
2．エレミヤの召命
さてこの1章は、エレミヤが預言者として召命を受けた時の出来事を語ります。エレミヤは、神の召しに尻込みをしています。確かに、国内強硬派の親エジプト派に物を申すわけですから、それはご免被るというものでしょう。しかし神は、ご自分が共におられること、そして必要な助けを与えると語ります（8節）。ちょうど、この対話が起こったのは、アーモンド畑の中だったのでしょう。アナトテはアーモンドの産地で有名です。イスラエルでは1、2月頃に真っ先に白い花を咲かせ、春の訪れを告げ知らせる花です。日本で言えば、桜です。桜の枝につぼみが付き始めると春間近し！と私たちのこころは、期待に膨らみます。ちょうど、エレミヤがアーモンドの枝を見て、そのつぼみを見つけて期待を膨らませていたように、神も、エレミヤが預言者として立ちあがるのをじっと見つめていた、ということでしょう。それは、5節「わたしは、あなたを胎内に形作る前からあなたを知り、あなたが母の胎を出る前からあなたを聖別し、国々への預言者と定めていた」と神のエレミヤに対する特別な期待であったわけです。ですから、さあ、あなたが預言者として立つ時が来た、出ていきなさい、ということでしょう。しかも、ここはヘブル語の「アーモンド」（シャーケード）と「見張っている」（ショーケード）に語呂合わせがある、一種のだじゃれがあります。神はユーモラスに語り、エレミヤの肩を押しているのです。
で、13節、いよいよ、エレミヤが伝えるべきメッセージが神に与えられます。北から傾く「煮え立った釜」は、バビロンのことでしょう。神がユダ南王国のすべての悪に対して、北方の民、バビロンを裁きの執行者とされることを語っています。
そして17節、神はエレミヤに「腰に帯を締め、おびえるな」と言います。こんな大それたメッセージを語るのか、エレミヤは、腰が引ける思いであったはずです。しかし、神は言います。19節「彼らはあなたと戦っても、あなたに勝てない。わたしがあなたとともにいて、あなたを救い出すからだ」ただ主に信頼するのみのエレミヤでした。神の召しに立つことは信仰の業以外の何物でもありません。では、今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Jeremiah 1: The Calling of Jeremiah
Today we begin the book of Jeremiah. This book is also long at 52 chapters, but I urge you to make an effort to deepen your reading rather than to read it all. If you do so, you will find that reading the Bible has become a natural and indispensable part of your life.
1. Background of the Book of Jeremiah
The author of this book is Jeremiah, whose name Jeremiah means “the Lord is exalted” in Hebrew. He was the son of a priest who lived in the town of Anathoth, a cold village about 4 km northeast of Jerusalem, and received divine revelation in 627 BC.
The historical background of the earlier reading of Isaiah was a time when the Assyrian Empire ruled the world. Now, however, it was Babylon, not Assyria, that ruled the world. The Assyrian Empire had been gradually weakening after the death of King Ashurban Apri in 633 BC, and was defeated and destroyed by the Babylonian army led by King Nebuchadnezzar in the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC.
Under these circumstances, King Jehoiakim of the Southern Kingdom of Judah attempted to gain independence from Babylon with the help of Egypt. However, the attempt failed in 596 BC, and King Jehoiakim was taken into Babylon as the first captive, and Zedekiah became king. The Southern Kingdom of Judah was essentially merged into the Babylonian Empire. Even so, the anti-Babylonian, or pro-Egyptian, movement within the Southern Kingdom of Judah remained unabated. Jeremiah prophesied that the actions of the pro-Egyptians would go against God’s will and lead to further tragedy.
2. The Calling of Jeremiah
This first chapter tells the story of Jeremiah’s calling as a prophet. Jeremiah is put off by God’s call. Certainly, he would be reluctant to do so because he would be addressing the hard-line pro-Egyptians in his own country. But God tells him that He is with him and will give him the help he needs (v. 8). It was probably just in the almond fields that this dialogue took place. Anatote is famous for its almonds. In Israel, almonds are the first white flowers to bloom around January or February, heralding the arrival of spring. In Japan, it is the cherry blossom. When buds begin to appear on the branches of cherry trees, we know that spring is just around the corner! Our hearts swell with anticipation. Just as Jeremiah looked at the almond branches and was filled with anticipation when he saw the buds, so God was watching Jeremiah as he stood up as a prophet. It was God’s special expectation for Jeremiah, as verse 5 says, “I knew you before I formed you in the womb, and I sanctified you before you left your mother’s womb, and I set you apart as a prophet to the nations. So now the time has come for you to stand as a prophet, and you are to go forth. Moreover, there is a kind of pun here, with the Hebrew word for “almond” (shirkade) and “watching” (showcade). God is speaking humorously and encourages him to try it.
So, in verse 13, finally, God gives Jeremiah the message to deliver. The “boiling pot” tilting from the north is probably Babylon. He is telling us that God will make Babylon, the people of the north, the executor of judgment against all evil in the southern kingdom of Judah.
Then, in verse 17, God tells Jeremiah to “gird up your loins and do not be afraid. Jeremiah must have been embarrassed to be speaking such a big message. But God says, verse 19: “They may fight against you, but they will not prevail against you. Jeremiah could only trust in the Lord. Standing in God’s calling is nothing but a work of faith. I pray that today will be another good day.
