1．神を認めない生活
17章は、16章に続き「私たちの神、主に対して犯したという、私たちの罪とは何か」に対する二番目の答えとなる部分です。先に、それは、偶像崇拝であると指摘されました（11節）。ここでは、日々の具体的な生活の中で、神を認めない、私たちのあり様が問われています。
そもそも、キリスト者は毎週礼拝に通っていますが、そこで何をしているのでしょう。考えたいのです。エレミヤの時代は、礼拝は、神殿に赴いて犠牲動物を献げることが中心でした。彼らはいつも、犠牲動物が目の前で屠られ、その動物の血が祭壇の角に塗り付けられるのを見ていました。そして、祭司が、それは彼らの罪の赦しのため、そして彼らが神あっての人生であることを覚えて、新しい一週もこの犠牲によって新しくされ、新しい歩みをするようにと教えられたわけです。彼らは「祭壇の角」に塗られた血を見ながら、神を信じていながら、神に対して不忠実な一週間の歩みを振り返り、尊いいのちの犠牲によってその不忠実さが赦されて、再び、新しい人生を歩むように動機づけられたわけです（1節）。しかし、それは、繰り返されるたびに、単なる儀式に過ぎないものになっていきました。いつもの習慣になり、自分の不忠実さのためにいのちが殺められたことに無感覚となっていったのです。それは、心が神から遠く離れていたためです（5節）。実際に行われていることは、神抜きの儀礼であり、その延長の生活でした。
彼らは安息日に、神あっての自分であることを覚え、感謝し、心を整えるよりも、神など振り返りもせず、昨日の金儲けの続き、つまり仕事に精を出すことばかりを考えていたというわけです。何とも、それは、私たちの姿そのものかもしれません。神は、そのような人生は、「地にその名が記される」ものだ、つまり、神にもその名は覚えられることはない、いずれ誰からも忘れ去られてしまう、ということでしょう。どんなにこの地上で名声をはせても、いずれ時代とともに忘れ去られていく寂しい人生です。
2．安息を聖なるものとせよ
21節「安息日に荷物を運ぶな。またそれをエルサレムの門の内に持ち込むな。また、安息日に荷物を家から出すな。いかなる仕事もするな。安息日を聖なるものとせよ」。と言います。大切なのは、運ぶ、持ち込む、家から出す、という行為のことではありません。安息日を聖なるものとすること、安息を味わうことです。神あっての生活である、と神を認める特別な日を守る、ということです。ただ日曜日ごとに、教会へ行く習慣を守ればよいということではありません。礼拝に出席して、そこで神の安息を深く味わうことなのです。預言者イザヤは心ここにあらずの、ただ習慣的儀礼的にささげる礼拝に、神が嫌悪感を抱いていることを伝えています（イザヤ1:11）。礼拝は主の安息を味わい、楽しむ素晴らしい時です。パウロは、週の初めの日に、ささげるべきものを取り分けるように教えましたが、それは、主にお会いすることを心待ちにし、楽しみとし、一週の守りを心から感謝し、その気持ちを献金という形にするという意味と無関係ではありません。もちろん、仕事の性質上、日曜日を聖日とすることのできない人もおられますし、そのような人を念頭にして語っていることではありません。大切なのは、「安息日」を守ることではなく「安息」を守ることです。神を慕い、愛する心が、礼拝者の内にあるかどうかが問われているのです。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Jeremiah 17 – Drawing Near to God from the Heart
1. life without acknowledging god
Chapter 17 is the second part of the book that answers the question, “What is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God? Earlier it was pointed out that it is idolatry (v. 11). The question here is what we are, not acknowledging God in the concrete details of our daily lives.
To begin with, Christians go to worship services every week, but what are they doing there? I want to think about it. In Jeremiah’s day, worship centered on going to the temple and offering sacrificial animals. They always watched as the sacrificial animal was slaughtered before their eyes and the blood of the animal was smeared on the horns of the altar. And so the priests were taught that it was for the forgiveness of their sins and to remember that their life was a life with God, and that they were to be renewed by this sacrifice and walk anew in the new week as well. As they looked at the blood on the “horns of the altar,” they reflected on a week of unfaithfulness to God, even though they believed in Him, and were motivated to walk a new life again, forgiven for their unfaithfulness by the sacrifice of His precious life (v. 1). But each time it was repeated, it became nothing more than a mere ritual. It became a habit, and they became insensitive to the fact that life was killed because of their unfaithfulness. It was because their hearts were far from God (v. 5). What was actually taking place was a ritual without God and an extension of their lives.
Instead of remembering, thanking, and preparing their hearts for God on the Sabbath, they were thinking only about continuing yesterday’s money-making, that is, going about their business. How very much like us! God would say that such a life is one in which “his name will be written on the earth,” meaning that his name will never be remembered by God, and he will eventually be forgotten by everyone. No matter how much fame one may have on earth, it is a lonely life that will eventually be forgotten in time.
2. keep the Sabbath holy
Verse 21: “Do not carry your baggage on the Sabbath. Do not carry baggage on the Sabbath, nor bring it within the gates of Jerusalem. And do not bring your baggage out of your house on the Sabbath day. Do no work of any kind. Keep the Sabbath day holy. He says, “The important thing is that you do not carry or bring your baggage. It is not the act of carrying, bringing in, or taking out of the house that is important. It is about keeping the Sabbath day holy and savoring the rest. It is about keeping a special day that acknowledges God as the reason for our lives. It is not just a matter of keeping the habit of going to church every Sunday. It is about attending worship services and deeply experiencing God’s rest there. The prophet Isaiah tells us that God is displeased with worship that is not from the heart, but is merely habitual and ritualistic (Isaiah 1:11). Worship is a wonderful time to savor and enjoy the Lord’s rest. Paul taught us to divide our offering on the first day of the week, not unrelated to our anticipation and enjoyment of meeting the Lord, our sincere thanksgiving for His protection during the week, and our giving of that feeling in the form of an offering. Of course, there are those who, due to the nature of their work, cannot observe Sunday as a holy day, and I am not speaking with such people in mind. The important thing is not to keep the “Day of Sabbath” but to keep the “Sabbath”. The question is whether or not the heart of adoration and love for God is within the worshipper. I pray that today will be another good day.
