1．神の裁きを宣告するセラヤ
バビロンに対する裁きの宣告は、本章までとなります。これらは、巻物に記されて、宿営の長であったセラヤに手渡されました。エレミヤは、預言通り、バビロンに引き連れられていくことがあったら、これを注意して読み、バビロンの滅亡を宣告するように、と言います（61-66節）。セラヤは、エレミヤの預言を口述筆記し、助けたバルクの兄弟です。バルクはエルサレムで、セラヤはバビロンで、神の定めを宣告する者となりました。
そして本章は、58節に及ぶ長いバビロンに対する裁きの宣告ですが、それは、捕囚の民に対する悔改めを勧め、新しい希望を持って行動するように促す内容にもなっています。彼らは、自分たちがバビロンに打ち破られた事の意味を悟らなくてはなりませんでした。このようにされたのは神である、と。そして神に立ち返り、神と共に新しい行動を起こす決断を促されなくてはならなかったのです。ですからエレミヤは言います。5節「しかし、イスラエルもユダも、その神、万軍の主に見捨てられることはない。彼らは、イスラエルの聖なる方から離れ、彼らの地は罪過で満ちていたが、バビロンの中から逃げ、それぞれ自分自身を救え。バビロンの咎のために断ち滅ぼされるな。これは、主の復讐の時、主がこれに報いをなされるからだ。」
2．神の言葉に生きる
バビロンによって滅ぼされた他の国々は、二度と再興されることもなかったのにも関わらず、イスラエルがエルサレム帰還とその再興を実現させたのは、このエレミヤのことばを伝えるセラヤの働きがあったからこそでしょう。そしてセラヤのことばを神のことばとして受け止める人々がいたからこそでしょう。
14節、「万軍の主はご自分にかけて誓われた。「わたしは必ず、バッタのような大群のような人々でおまえを満たす。彼らはおまえに対して叫び声をあげる。主は、御力をもって地を造り、知恵をもって世界を堅く据え、英知をもって天を張られた。主の御声に、天では水のざわめきが起こる。主は地の果てから雲を上らせ、雨のために稲妻を造り、ご自分の倉から風を出される。すべての人間は愚かで無知だ。すべての金細工人は、彫像のために恥を見る。その鋳た像は偽りで、その中には息がない。」
バビロンもまた裁かれる。神ご自身の権威の高さは、神がバビロンもイスラエルもみな創造した、天地の造り主だというところにあります。神は万物すべてを支配しておられる。だから、たとえバビロンの勢いが絶頂の極みにあり、誰もこれに抗しえないと思われることがあっても、神が意思されるなら、その勢いは一瞬にして取り去られるのです。
エレミヤは、捕囚の残りの民に、悔改めを促しました。また同時に、捕囚の身となり、バビロンに連れ去られていく民に対しても悔改めを促しています。そして、まことの神に立ち返るように、まことの神のことばに信頼して生きるようにと勧めるのです。
ですから、もし、今、何かで打ち敗れた思いを感じていることがあるなら、これが神の裁きであると思うところがあるなら、いつまでも項垂れておらず、神を見上げて、新しい今に踏み出すべきなのです。神は私たちの立て直そうとする努力を祝してくださるお方です。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 51: The Declaration Against Babylon
1. seraiah pronounces god’s judgment
The pronouncements of judgment against Babylon end with this chapter. These were written on a scroll and handed to Seraiah, the chief of the camp. Jeremiah tells him to read them carefully and pronounce the destruction of Babylon if he is ever taken to Babylon, as prophesied (vv. 61-66). Seraiah is the brother of Baruch, who dictated and helped Jeremiah with his prophecies. Baruch became the one to pronounce God’s decree in Jerusalem and Seraiah in Babylon.
And while this chapter is a 58-verse long pronouncement of judgment against Babylon, it is also an exhortation to the captives to repent and to act with new hope. They had to realize the significance of their defeat by Babylon. It was God who had done this. They had to be prompted to turn to God and make a decision to take a new course of action with Him. So Jeremiah says, verse 5: “But neither Israel nor Judah will be forsaken by the Lord their God, the Lord of hosts. They shall be separated from the Holy One of Israel, and their land shall be full of transgressions; but flee from the midst of Babylon, and save yourselves, each one of you. Do not be cut off and destroyed because of the iniquity of Babylon. For this is the time of vengeance of the Lord, and He will recompense it.”
2. living by the Word of God
The reason Israel was able to return to Jerusalem and rebuild, even though the other nations destroyed by Babylon were never to be rebuilt, was because of the work of Seraiah, who preached the words of Jeremiah. It was also because of the people who accepted Seraiah’s words as God’s words.
Verse 14 says, “The Lord of hosts swore by himself, saying, ‘I will surely destroy the grasshoppers. I will surely fill you with people like a swarm of grasshoppers. They will cry out against you. nbspThe LORD hath made the earth with his power, and with his wisdom hath he established the world; with his wisdom hath he stretched out the heavens. At the voice of the LORD, there will be a murmuring of waters in the heavens. He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth, He makes lightning for rain, and He sends forth the wind from His storehouse. All men are foolish and ignorant. Every goldsmith sees shame because of his graven image. His cast image is false, and there is no breath in it.”
Babylon will also be judged. The height of God’s own authority lies in the fact that He is the Maker of heaven and earth, having created both Babylon and Israel. God is in control of all things. Therefore, even when Babylon is at the height of its power and no one seems able to resist it, if God wills, the power will be taken away in an instant.
Jeremiah urged the rest of the captive people to repent. At the same time, he also urges repentance to the people who are taken away into captivity to Babylon. He encourages them to turn to the true God and to live trusting in His Word.
Therefore, if we are feeling defeated in any way, if we feel that this is God’s judgment, we should not stay drooping, but look up to God and step into the new now. God is the one who celebrates our efforts to rebuild. I wish you a good day today.
