本日よりダニエル書に入ります。ダニエル書は、ユダ南王国の末期、バビロン捕囚が行われた時代を背景とし、舞台は、バビロンとなっています。
1．第一回バビロン捕囚の出来事
まず1節、「ユダの王エホヤキムの治世の第三年」は、西暦ではBC605年となります。現在のトルコとシリアの国境付近で「カルケミシュの戦い」が起こりましたが、その直後のことでした。バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルは、エジプトとアッシリヤ亡命軍の連合部隊を討ち破り、その勢いでシリアとイスラエルをも征服したのです。この際ネブカドネツァル王は、イスラエルの王族や貴族の中から、有能な青年を捕虜とし、連れ帰っています。
そして、捕虜となった彼らは、「カルデア人の文学とことば」を3年間教えられます。バビロンの哲学、宗教、魔術、天文学、科学、そして医学に精通するように訓練を受け、これらをバビロンの公用語つまり、アッカド語で学んだのです。それは、この若い青年たちをカルデア人のリーダーとして利用するためでした。
また彼らは、バビロン式の名前を与えられました。ダニエル（「神はさばきたもう」の意）は、ベルテシャツァルと呼ばれました。それは「マルドゥクの妻、王を守る者」を意味しています。ハナンヤ（「主は恵み深い」の意）はシャデラク（「アク（バビロンの月の神）の命令」の意）と改名され、ミシャエル（「神であられるのは誰か」の意）は、メシャク（「誰がアクのような神か」の意）と、そして、アザルヤ（「主は助けたもう」の意）はアベデ・ネゴ（「ネボ（バビロンの神）のしもべ」の意）と名付けられました（7節）。
さらに彼らは、王が食べるごちそうや王が飲むぶどう酒を与えられました。それは実に名誉なことであったはずです。しかし、それはまさに、エゼキエルがあらかじめ警告したように、異教の地で、宗教的に汚れたもの（レビ記11章）食べさせられることになる試練そのものであったのです（エゼキエル4:12-15）。こうして彼らは、まことの神を信じる身でありながら、その信条に反して、異教徒として生きることを強いられていくのです
2．ダニエルたちの信仰的な決断
このような事態にあって、彼らは、与えられた食事を辞退し、菜食に徹する道を選びました。彼らにとって、改宗を迫られることはなくても、異教的習慣に与ることは、違和感を覚える事態でした。そしてこれに対して、全面拒否に代わる代替え案を提案した、と言う形です。神が働いてくださったので、彼らの世話役に対する願いは、心配されながらも、受け入れられていきます。さらに神は、四人の少年に、知識とあらゆる文学を理解する力を与えらます。バビロン側にとっても、彼らがバビロンの学問に習熟し、リーダーとして訓練されることが重要なポイントでしたから、そこにしっかり取り組む彼らを、王は認め、受け入れていくわけです。
印象的なのは、四人の若者に積極的に働かれる神の存在です。信仰の立場を貫くことは、しばしば、習慣的、文化的な相違を乗り越える微妙な試練があるものでしょう。しかし、エゼキエル書においても、「主はそこにおられる」（エゼキエル48:35）ことを学びましたように、主は彼らと共にいて助けてくださったのです。何よりも、取り組まねばならぬ部分にしっかり取り組み、そこで認められていくことが大切で、神はそのための助けを注いでくださるお方です。試練においては、押さえるべきところを押さえて、注力する判断力を大切にし、大胆な歩みをしてまいりたいものです。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 1: The Age of Daniel (Chapter 1)
Today we begin the book of Daniel. The book of Daniel is set against the backdrop of the Babylonian Captivity at the end of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, and the setting is Babylon.
1. The First Babylonian Captivity
The first verse, “the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,” is dated 605 BC in the Western calendar. It was shortly after the “Battle of Carchemish” took place near the present-day border between Turkey and Syria. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, defeated a combined force of Egyptian and Assyrian exiles and used their momentum to conquer Syria and Israel. At this time, Nebuchadnezzar took back as prisoners of war capable young men from among the royalty and nobility of Israel.
They were then taken captive and taught “the literature and language of the Chaldeans” for three years. They were trained to become familiar with Babylonian philosophy, religion, magic, astronomy, science, and medicine, which they learned in the official language of Babylon, Akkadian. The purpose was to use these young men as leaders of the Chaldeans.
They were also given Babylonian names. Daniel (meaning “God has judged”) was called Belteshazzar. It means “wife of Marduk, protector of the king. Hananya (meaning “the Lord is gracious”) was renamed Shaderak (meaning “the decree of Aku (the Babylonian moon god)”), Mishael (meaning “who is God”) was renamed Meshach (meaning “who is a god like Aku”), and Azarja (meaning “the Lord help”) was renamed Abed-nego (“Nebo ( (meaning “servant of Nebo (the god of Babylon)”) (v. 7).
They were also given a feast for the king to eat and wine for him to drink. It must have been a great honor. But it was the very ordeal that Ezekiel had warned them about, that they would be forced to eat religiously unclean food (Leviticus 11) in a pagan land (Ezekiel 4:12-15). Thus, they were forced to live as pagans, contrary to their belief in the true God.
2. the religious decision of Daniel and his friends
In the face of this situation, they chose to decline the food they were given and to remain vegetarian. Even though they were not forced to convert, they were uncomfortable with the pagan customs. In response, they proposed an alternative to total rejection. God was at work, and their request for a sponsor was accepted, albeit with concern. God also gives the four boys knowledge and the ability to understand all literature. The king recognizes and accepts their commitment to the Babylonians, since it was important for the Babylonians to train them in Babylonian learning and to train them to be leaders.
What is striking is the presence of God actively working with the four young men. Holding to a position of faith can often be a delicate ordeal of overcoming customary and cultural differences. But as we learned in Ezekiel, “the Lord is there” (Ezekiel 48:35), and He was with them to help. Above all, it is important to work hard on the areas that need to be worked on and be recognized there, and God is the one who pours out help for that. In trials, we should be bold in our walk, holding on to what we need to hold on to, and valuing our judgment to focus on what we need to focus on. I pray that today will be another good day.
