1．アッシリアへの裁きとユダへの約束
1節ナホムは、「散らす者が、おまえに向かって上って来る」と言います。ナホムは、エレミヤやイザヤのように、イスラエルに向かって語っているわけではありません。当時の大国アッシリアに向かって語っているのです。一体誰がアッシリアを散らすと言うのか。これまで諸国を侵略し、世界の頂点に立ったアッシリアが、散らされると言うのです。しかしこの預言は、確かに成就し、アッシリアは、メディアとバビロンの連合軍によって滅ぼされていくのです。神が計画された歴史を変えることはできません。ですから、2節、神は、滅亡寸前であったユダ南王国に、これを回復する、と約束しています。2節の「荒らす者」は、第三版では「かすめる者」。ここでは、徹底的にアッシリアが荒らされて略奪されることを語っているのでしょう。
2．アッシリアへの攻撃
3節以降は、アッシリアを滅ぼすメディアとバビロンの連合軍の激しい攻撃の様子が描かれています。実に生々しく、絵画的に描かれています。メディア軍は、緋色を好んだとされ、その軍隊は、煌びやかな装いであったのでしょう。そして陣形を整え、強力な戦車隊を引き連れて襲い掛かるのです。5節、「高貴な人は呼び出され」とあります。それは、本来、戦いの前線には出てこないような、身分の高い者がこの戦いに招集されるということです。つまり、いよいよ敵は本陣に迫れり、開城を求める段階に来た、というところでしょうか。3節が攻撃側の描写であることは明らかですが、4節は、攻撃側か防御側か難しいところです。5節は、防御側とすれば、外から柵が設けられるというのは、袋小路に追い詰められたアッシリアの悲劇を物語っているようです。
そこに6節「いくつもの川の水門が開かれ、宮殿は消え去る」と言います。ニネベは、長さ5キロ、幅2.5キロの大きさの町で、ティグリス川とコセル川の岐点に建てられていました。30メートルの高さの城壁をもって守られ、城壁の上は、4台の戦車を並べて走らせることができるほど広い、難攻不落の町であったとされます。しかし、ニネベを攻略したメディアとバビロンの連合軍は、ニネベを貫流するコセル川を調整している水路や水門を占拠し、それを開放し、町を水攻めにし、これを占領したと言います。この出来事は、ナホムが預言して、20年と経たずに実現しました。
その破壊は、あまりにもすさまじく、その後約200年を経て、この地域を遠征した歴史家のクセノフォンも何も記録していないことから、永遠に忘れられた町となったと考えられています。10節、「不毛、空虚、そして荒廃」とありますが、ヘブル語では、ブーカー、メブーカー、メブラーカーと、音の語呂合わせがあり、徹底した攻撃を効果的に語り、恐怖を煽られる気がします。
ヨナの時代、ニネベは悔い改めましたが、それから約100年後、ニネベは神の前に頑なで、滅ぼされていきます。神が敵となることの恐ろしさがあります。しかし神が味方ならば、現状がどうあれ、ユダ南王国のように救い出される、希望があると考えるべきでしょう。目には見えませんが絶えず共にいてくださり、正しいことをなさる主を喜び、信頼し、そのみ教えに従ってまいりたいものです。主の側に立つ旗印を明らかにいたしましょう。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Nahum, Chapter 2: The Thorough Destruction of Nineveh
1. judgment on Assyria and promise to Judah
Verse 1 Nahum says, “He who scatters will come up against you.” Nahum is not speaking to Israel, as Jeremiah and Isaiah were. He is speaking to Assyria, the great power of the time. Who in the world would scatter Assyria? Assyria, which had invaded the nations and stood at the top of the world, would be scattered. But this prophecy will indeed be fulfilled, and Assyria will be destroyed by the combined forces of Media and Babylon. We cannot change the history that God has planned for us. Thus, in verse 2, God promises to restore this to the southern kingdom of Judah, which was on the verge of destruction; the “ravagers” of verse 2 are “grazers” in the third version. Here it is probably speaking of Assyria being thoroughly razed and plundered.
2. attack on Assyria
Verses 3 and following describe a fierce attack by the combined forces of Media and Babylon that destroys Assyria. It is a truly vivid and picturesque depiction. The color scarlet is said to be the favorite color of the Median army, which must have been dressed in glittering attire. In verse 5, the nobleman is called out. This means that those of high rank, who would not normally appear at the front lines of battle, are called to participate in the battle. It is clear that verse 3 is a description of the attackers, but it is difficult to say whether verse 4 is for the attackers or the defenders. The fact that a fence is set up from the outside tells us of the tragedy of Assyria, which was trapped in a cul-de-sac.
Then verse 6 says, “The floodgates of many rivers will be opened, and the palace will disappear. Nineveh, 5 km long and 2.5 km wide, was built at the junction of the Tigris and Kosel rivers, protected by a 30-meter-high wall, so wide that four chariots could be driven side by side over the wall, and was said to be an impregnable city. However, the combined forces of Media and Babylon that captured Nineveh took over the canals and sluices that regulated the Kosel River, which flowed through Nineveh, opened them, flooded the town, and occupied it, according to the story. This event was prophesied by Nahum and came to pass in less than 20 years.
The destruction was so terrible that, some 200 years later, the city is thought to have been forgotten forever, as Xenophon, the historian who expeditioned through the area, recorded nothing.10 Verse 10, “barren, void, and desolate,” Hebrew, boukar, meboukar, mevlakhah, a sound word that effectively speaks of a thorough attack and seems to incite fear.
In the time of Jonah, Nineveh repented, but about 100 years later, Nineveh was stubborn before God and was destroyed. There is a fear of God being an enemy. But if God is on our side, we should consider that no matter what the current situation is, there is hope, that we will be rescued like the southern kingdom of Judah. We should rejoice and trust in the Lord, who is always with us and does what is right, although we cannot see Him, and follow His teachings. Let us make clear our banner of standing by the Lord’s side. I pray that today will be another good day.
