1．ヨエル書について
ヨエル書の著者については、「ペトエルの子ヨエル」とあるだけで、あまりよくわかっていません。その時代背景については、ヨエル書自体から考えられる二つの説があります。一つはBC830年頃、ヨアシュの時代、バビロン捕囚以前に書かれたと考える伝統説です。というのも、本書でユダの敵とされている民族はアッシリア人、カルデア人ではありません。それは、ペリシテ人とフェニキア人（3:4）、エジプト人とエドム人（3:19）で、バビロン捕囚という歴史的な出来事が起こる前の状況を示しているからです。他方近年の批評的な研究は、バビロン捕囚期以降の時代に書かれたとします。というのも、ヨエル書には、イスラエル北王国のことが語られていないこと、そして、エルサレムの陥落が暗示されていると思われる箇所があること（3:1-3、17）からです。今の処は、前者の伝統説、つまりバビロン捕囚の出来事の前に書かれたという説が有力です。
2．いなごの害
では1章を見てまいりましょう。いなごによって農作物がことごとく食べ尽くされる、恐ろしい災害が描かれています。「噛みいなご」「いなご」「バッタ」「若虫」（4節）、ヘブル語では、いなごに4種類のことばが使われ、新改訳も苦心して訳出しているようです。カトリック教会の訳であるバルバロ訳はこれらを音訳しています。これらの違いは、いなごの種類を示すのか、成長の一つの過程の状態を示すのか、よくわかっていません。また4種類のいなごが一度に襲ったのか、いなごの災害が四度立て続けに起こったのか、もわかりません。しかしながら、数えきれないいなごの大群が、アラビヤ砂漠の風によってパレスチナに運ばれ、日食のように太陽を暗くし、青草や木立の一切を食い尽くしてしまう前代未聞の災害が起こっていたのです（2節）。それは酔っぱらいが目を覚まされ（5節）、祭司たちが、ささげ物を入手できなくなり（9節）、さらに国民と家畜は食糧と水不足で死に直面し（20節）、国土が荒廃する出来事でした。
3．ヨエルによる神のことば
ヨエルは神のことばを語ります。第一に、「聞け」「耳を傾けよ」（2節）と。前代未聞の事態がこの世界に起こりつつあるとき、私たちはまず真っ先に神のことばに注目しなくてはなりません。というのも、この世のあらゆる事柄を支配しているのは聖書の神であり、天地創造の神です。コロナ禍の影響がまだ収まらない今は、まさにその時でしょう。
続いて「子どもたちに」「（その）後の世代」にこのような事態を伝えよと言います（3節）。これは特別な時代、神が物申さねばならぬ時代だからでしょう。
ですから5節「目を覚ませ」と言います。黙示録のサルディスの教会への警告を思い出すところです（黙示3:1-6）。時代の流れがストップさせられるような状況が起きている。それは時代の流れに流されるままに生きて、自分を失いかけている人たちへの警告です。果たして今のままの生き方の継続に何が待ち受けているのか、立ち止まってよくよく考えることだと言います。どのように生きることが本当なのか、どのように家族と共にあるか、どのように会社を動かすべきか、この危機的な状況にあって、私たちは考えなくてはなりません。そして、「痛み悲しめ」（8、13節）「泣き叫べ」（11、13節）「粗布をまとって」（13節）「きよめの集会を招集せよ」（14節）「主を呼び求めよ」（14、19節）と勧められます。主を求める以外に、この危機的状況を乗り越える術はありません。このような時代であればこそ、教会に集まり、共に主を仰ぎ、祈り、神の語り掛けを受ける時なのです。つまり、すべき正しいことを教えられる時なのです。教会に集まって心を一つにして祈り、主のことばに耳を傾けましょう。では今日も良き一日となるように祈ります。

Joel 1: God’s Word Spoken to the Locusts
1．About the Book of Joel
Not much is known about the author of the book of Joel, other than that it refers to “Joel son of Pethuel. There are two possible theories about its historical background based on the Book of Joel itself. One is the traditional theory that it was written around 830 BC, in the time of Joash, before the Babylonian captivity. This is because the peoples mentioned as enemies of Judah in this book are not the Assyrians or Chaldeans. It is the Philistines and Phoenicians (3:4) and the Egyptians and Edomites (3:19), because they represent the situation before the historical event of the Babylonian captivity. Recent critical studies, on the other hand, place the book in the period after the Babylonian Captivity. This is because the Book of Joel does not mention the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and there are passages in which the fall of Jerusalem seems to be implied (3:1-3, 17). For now, the former traditional theory, that is, that the book was written before the Babylonian captivity, is the most likely explanation.
2. the harm caused by locusts
Let us look at chapter 1. We see a terrible plague of locusts devouring all the crops. In Hebrew, four different words are used for locusts: “biting locusts,” “locusts,” “grasshoppers,” and “young insects” (v. 4). The Barbaro translation, the translation of the Catholic Church, transliterates these words. It is not clear whether these differences indicate the type of locusts or the state of one of the growth processes. We also do not know if all four types of locusts struck at once, or if four locust plagues occurred in rapid succession. However, there was an unprecedented disaster in which countless locust swarms were carried into Palestine by the winds of the Arabian Desert, darkening the sun like an eclipse and devouring every green grass and grove of trees (v. 2). It was an event that would wake up the drunkards (v. 5), make it impossible for the priests to obtain offerings (v. 9), leave the people and their livestock to die from lack of food and water (v. 20), and devastate the land (v. 21).
3. the word of god through joel
Joel speaks the Word of God. First, “Listen” and “give ear” (v. 2). When unprecedented events are taking place in the world, we must first of all look to the Word of God. For it is the God of the Bible, the God of creation, who is in control of all things in this world. This is the very time when the effects of the Covid disaster have not yet subsided.
He then tells us to tell “our children” and “the generation after [them]” about this situation (v. 3). This is a special time, a time when God must speak.
Therefore, verse 5 says, “Wake up. We are reminded of the warning of Sardis to the church in Revelation (Rev. 3:1-6). A situation has arisen where the current of the times is being brought to a halt. It is a warning to those who are living as the current of the times and are on the verge of losing themselves. He says that we should stop and think carefully about what really awaits us if we continue to live the way we are now. How should we really live, how should we be with our families, how should we run our companies? We are then encouraged to “grieve in pain” (vv. 8, 13), “cry out” (vv. 11, 13), “cover ourselves with coarse cloth” (v. 13), “call a meeting of cleansing” (v. 14), and “call upon the Lord” (vv. 14, 19). There is no other way to overcome this critical situation than to seek the Lord. It is precisely in times like these that we should gather in the church, look to the Lord together, pray, and receive God’s word. In other words, it is a time to be taught the right things to do. Let us gather in church, pray with one heart, and listen to the Lord’s words. Let us pray for a good day today.
