1．イエスの終末預言（24:1-21） 24、25章は、第五の説教集と呼ばれる部分で、その内容は、イエスの終末預言となっています。未来に起こることを語っている部分です。ただこの部分、どうも、一般的にではなく、親しい弟子たちのみに向けて語られたものです。
この個所をどのように理解していくか。歴史家のヨセフォスは、この箇所はAD70年のローマ帝国によるエルサレム攻撃をイエスが預言したものだと解説します。実際、教会史家のエウセビオスも、AD70年、キリスト教徒が、この箇所を覚えていて、エルサレムがローマ帝国に攻撃される前に立ち去って、難を逃れたと記録しています。
ただ3節、「あなたが来られ、世が終わる時のしるし」とあるように、それは、AD70年のエルサレム破壊に当てはめるよりは、さらに後の時代の人々にも関わる、世界の終末的な時を預言しているとも考えられるのです。となるとなんとなく聞き流せない内容が、そこにはあるということになります。
そこでマタイが語っていることに注目しましょう。まず、その夜の終わり、終末的な時には前兆があると語ります。どんな前兆か、いくつか拾い読みしてみましょう。まず5節、救い主の名を名のる偽キリストが現れること、6-7節、戦争・内乱、政情不安が起こること、7節、自然災害が起こること、9節、迫害や11節、宗教的な惑わしが起こること、12節、社会的な不正があり、人々は冷酷になっていくこと。そして、全世界へのキリスト教の宣教が終了する、と言います。
そのような事態の後に、35節「この天地は滅び去ります」と言います。考えてみると、私たちの時代は、このような宗教的な預言とは関係なく、環境問題、エネルギー問題が深刻化し、地球が滅びるのではないかという心配がある時代です。そうであれば、なおさら、この個所の語ることについては、よくよく心に留める必要もあるでしょう。
そして大切なことは、この個所を読みながら、この世に対する神の主権を理解することです。つまり、神によって創造され、始まったこの世界は、神がその終わりも定めておられる、ということです。核開発の過ちを犯した人間のせいで世の終わりが来るのではありません。あるいは、熱烈なキリスト教徒の祈りによって終末が近づいてくるわけでもありません。人類の歴史を支配し、これを始め、終わらせる神がいる、ということが教えられているのです。
2．終末の時（24:23-51）
ただ、やはりその時はいつなんだろうと気になる人も多いでしょう。時代が悪くなると何年何月に世の終わりが来るようなお話が、人々の興味関心を引きがちです。イエスは、それをどのように語っているのか。30節、「そのとき、人の子のしるしが天に現れます。」終末には何か劇画的なことが起こるのか、と思わされるところですが、マタイが言おうとしていることは、イエスの語ったことを皆が正しいと認める事態が生じるというだけのことです。そして、36節、その日は、誰も知らない、ただ神のみ知る時だから、目をさました生き方をしなさいと言います。具体的に45節「食事時にきちんと食事を与える」という当たり前のことをきちんとすることだと言います。
世の終わりが来るからといって、特別な生き方をせよとイエスはおっしゃいませんでした。むしろ、いつもどおりにしていなさい、と言います。つまり、冷静に物事を考え、人の言動に振り回されず、いつも通りに、やるべきことをしっかりやることです。やがて人は皆、神のもとへ帰っていくのですから、終末など恐れるものではないのです。むしろ愛の神とのしっかりした関係が築かれていれば、それは、恐れの日ではありません。明日のことは明日に委ねて、今日の一日をしっかり生きることです。では今日もよい一日であるように祈ります。Matthew 24: The Time of the End of the World
1. end-time prophecy of Jesus (24:1-21)
Chapters 24 and 25 are the fifth part of the sermon collection, which is called the Fifth Sermon, and its content is Jesus’ end-time prophecy. It is a section that talks about things that will happen in the future. But this part, apparently, was not spoken to the general public, but only to the disciples who were close to him.
How are we to understand this section? Historian Josephus explains that this passage is Jesus’ prophecy of the attack on Jerusalem by the Roman Empire in AD 70. In fact, the church historian Eusebius also records that in AD 70, Christians remembered this passage and left and escaped the difficulty before Jerusalem was attacked by the Roman Empire.
However, as verse 3 says, “A sign of the time when you will come and the world will end,” it could be considered to be a prophecy of the apocalyptic time of the world, which concerns people in even later times, rather than applying it to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. If that is the case, then there is something in there that is somehow hard to ignore.
So let us look at what Matthew is saying. First, he tells us that there will be omens at the end of the night, the apocalyptic time. Let’s pick up on a few of these omens. First, verse 5, the appearance of a false Christ claiming the name of the Savior; verses 6-7, wars, civil wars, and political unrest; verse 7, natural disasters; verse 9, persecution and verse 11, religious deception; verse 12, social injustice, and people will become ruthless. He then says that the Christian mission to the whole world will end.
After such an eventuality, verse 35 says, “This heaven and earth will perish. When you think about it, regardless of such religious prophecies, we live in a time when environmental and energy problems are becoming more serious, and there are fears that the earth will be destroyed. If that is the case, we need to keep in mind what this passage says even more carefully.
What is important is to understand God’s sovereignty over the world as we read this passage. In other words, God created and began this world, and He has also determined its end. The end of the world will not come because of man’s mistake of developing nuclear weapons. Nor is the end approaching because of the prayers of fervent Christians. We are told that there is a God who controls, initiates, and ends human history.
2. the time of the end (24:23-51)
However, many people are still wondering when that time is. When times get bad, stories about the end of the world coming in what year and month tend to attract people’s interest. How does Jesus tell it, verse 30, “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven.” One is led to believe that something dramatic will happen at the end of time, but what Matthew is trying to say is that there will be a situation in which everyone will agree that what Jesus said is true. Then, in verse 36, he tells us to live an awake life because that day is a time when no one knows, only God. Specifically, he says in verse 45, we are to do the natural thing properly, which is to feed properly at mealtime.
Jesus did not tell us to live a special life just because the end of the world is coming. Rather, he told us to do things as we always do. In other words, we are to think calmly, not be swayed by the words and actions of others, and do exactly what we are supposed to do as usual. In the end, everyone will return to God, so there is no need to fear the apocalypse. Rather, it is not a day to fear if we have a solid relationship with the God of love. We must leave tomorrow to tomorrow, and live well today. So I pray that you have a good day today.
