1．ユダの裏切り（26:1-19）
26章の冒頭には「イエスはこれらのことばをすべて語り終えると」とあります。つまり、ここまでの内容が、イエスの語られたすべてである、と言うことでしょう。そしてこれ以降は、いよいよイエスが語られたことに基づいて、イエスご自身が行動を起こした内容について語られるのです。つまりそれは、イエスが十字架の使命を成し遂げた記録です。ですからマタイは、ルカのようにエルサレムへ向かう旅で起こった出来事は飛ばしています。そして、一挙にエルサレムでの出来事、つまりイエスの十字架の予告、最後の晩餐、ユダの裏切り、イエスの逮捕と裁判へと駆け足で書き進んでいくのです。
まずマタイは油注ぎと呼ばれた出来事を書き留めています。この出来事は、すべての福音書に記録されていますが、微妙にその状況や内容が異なっています。その違いについては、後でじっくり読み比べて見つけていただきたいと思いますが、この時女は、インドから輸入されたぜいたく品の香油をイエスの頭に注ぎました。それは死体に塗るために用いられるもので、イエスの葬りの備えをするものでした。
続いて、ユダの裏切りの記録です（14-25）。イエスは銀貨30枚で取引されました。それは、奴隷を失った主人に対して支払われる賠償金の額に相当するものです（出エジプト21:32）。つまり、既にゼカリヤ書で学びましたが、ゼカリヤの預言どおりに（ゼカリヤ11:12）、イエスの働きは、銀30枚、奴隷程度のものだと見下したのです。神の子イエスの働きは、お金に換算されるようなものではありません。それは全人類を救う、尊いものです。
2．最後の晩餐と逮捕（26:20-75）
ともあれマタイはこの後駆け足で、最後の晩餐、ゲッセマネの園での祈り、逮捕と裁判、そしてペテロの裏切り、とイエスの身に起こったことを書き連ねていきます。注意深く読むと、17節、マタイは最後の晩餐は、種なしパンの祭の第一日、ニサンの月の15日に行われたと記しています。しかし、ヨハネの福音書によると、この出来事はニサンの月の14日が始まる夜に起こったとされています（13:1、18:28）。ヨハネの記録では、イエスが十字架につけられたのは、ちょうどお祭り騒ぎの時、過ぎ越しの小羊が殺される時刻、つまりニサンの月の14日が終わる午後に起こったことになります。このずれをどう考えるのか？はっきりとした根拠はありませんが、おそらくヨハネの方が事実に近いのではないか、と考えられていて、マタイの記録とどうして異なっているのか、その原因は、よくわかっていません。気になる人もおられるかもしれませんが、福音書は、マタイの福音書にしても、執筆された時には、すでにその出来事から約20、30年も経っていて、書いている内容も、私たちが神を知ることに関して必要なことに絞っていることを弁えておく必要はあるでしょう。
ともあれマタイは、56節、十字架の前にイエスの身に起こったこれらすべてのことが、聖書、つまり旧約聖書に語られていることが成就するために起こったのだと言います。具体的に言えば、私たちの罪の赦しが成し遂げられるためでした。ただそこには、もはやイエスのエルサレム入場を大歓迎した民衆の姿はありません。弟子たちもみな、イエスを裏切り、消え去っていました。さらにイエスに敵対し、イエスを葬り去ろうとする者たちが、イエスを取り囲み、イエスには、辱めと侮辱が加えられています。まったくイエスには絶望的な状況でした。その時のイエスの心境はいかばかりであったか、と心痛む思いです（ヨブ記29、39）。しかし、マタイは、これが私たちの罪の赦しのためにイエスが引き受けられた試練であったと語り掛けるのです。わずか銀30枚で、この偉業を成し遂げられたイエスを、あなたはどう受け止めるのか？あなたに永遠のいのちをお渡しするために、イエスが成し遂げたこの出来事に、やはり心動かされるところです。では、今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。
Matthew 26: The Road to the Cross of Jesus
1. betrayal of Judas (26:1-19)
The beginning of chapter 26 says, “When Jesus had finished speaking all these words. In other words, this is all that Jesus has said up to this point. From this point on, we are finally told what Jesus himself did based on what he had said. In other words, it is the record of Jesus’ accomplishment of the mission of the cross. So Matthew, like Luke, skips the events that took place on the journey to Jerusalem. Matthew, like Luke, skips the events of the journey to Jerusalem and rushes through the events in Jerusalem at once: the announcement of Jesus’ crucifixion, the Last Supper, Judas’ betrayal, Jesus’ arrest and trial, and so on.
First, Matthew writes down the event known as the anointing. This event is recorded in all the Gospels, but with slightly different circumstances and details. The woman anointed Jesus’ head with perfumed oil, a luxury imported from India, which was used to anoint corpses. It was to be used to anoint the corpse and prepare it for Jesus’ burial.
Next, we have the record of Judas’ betrayal (14-25). Jesus was traded for 30 pieces of silver. That is the equivalent of the amount of compensation paid to a master for the loss of a slave (Ex. 21:32). In other words, as we have already learned in the book of Zechariah, Jesus’ works were dismissed as 30 pieces of silver, about the size of a slave, just as Zechariah prophesied (Zechariah 11:12). The work of Jesus, the Son of God, is not something that can be converted into money. It is precious, saving all mankind.
2. the Last Supper and the arrest (26:20-75)
Matthew then proceeds to describe what happened to Jesus, including the Last Supper, the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the arrest and trial, and Peter’s betrayal. If you read carefully, in verse 17, Matthew notes that the Last Supper took place on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the 15th day of the month of Nisan. John’s Gospel, however, states that it took place on the night that the 14th day of the month of Nisan begins (13:1; 18:28). According to John’s record, Jesus’ crucifixion took place just at the time of the festivities, at the time the Passover lamb was slain, i.e., in the afternoon at the end of the 14th day of the month of Nisan. What do we make of this discrepancy? There is no clear evidence, but it is thought that John is probably closer to the facts, and it is not clear why it differs from Matthew’s record. Some may be curious, but it should be noted that the Gospels, even Matthew’s, were written about 20 or 30 years after the events when they were written, and the content of the Gospels is focused on what we need to know about God.
At any rate, Matthew says in verse 56 that all these things that happened to Jesus before the cross happened in order to fulfill what the Bible, the Old Testament, tells us. Specifically, it was so that the forgiveness of our sins could be accomplished. Only there are no longer the people who welcomed Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem with open arms. The disciples had all betrayed Jesus and disappeared. Furthermore, those who were hostile to Jesus and wanted to bury him surrounded him, adding insult and humiliation to his disgrace. It was a desperate situation for Jesus. It is heartbreaking to imagine how Jesus must have been feeling at that time (Job 29, 39). But Matthew tells us that this was the trial Jesus undertook for the forgiveness of our sins. How do you accept Jesus who accomplished this feat with only 30 pieces of silver? I am still moved by this event that Jesus accomplished in order to offer you eternal life. So, I pray that you have a good day today.
