１．ピリピの教会への感謝（1:1-5）
パウロは、エペソ人の手紙において、神の霊的な祝福とそれに基づく、幸せな人間関係のあり方について語ってきました。今日開く、この手紙では、それがもっと具体的な形で語られています。
まずパウロは、宣教のために、ピリピの人々がよい協力関係を持ってきたことに感謝を言い表しています。6節「あずかってきた」の原語はコイノニアです。なかなか訳しにくいことばですが、敢えて訳せば、福音を広めることにおいて「親しい協力関係を保ってきた」ことに感謝しています」ということでしょう。
つまり、ピリピの教会の信徒は、パウロにキリストの福音を知らされて、それを喜び、パウロと気楽で楽しい付き合いを続けてきた、というのではありません。むしろ、パウロが、より多くの人々に福音を知ってもらいたいと熱意を持っていることに気づき、その働きがさらに進むように、と喜びをもって助け（使徒16:12）、いやむしろ、犠牲を払っても支えてきた、というわけです（4：3、2コリント8:1-5、9:1-5）。パウロが、感謝するわけです。
2．ピリピの教会のための祈り（1:6-11）
そのようなわけでピリピの教会は、宣教の熱意があり、愛を持って神のために働く教会と言えます。にもかかわらずパウロは、ピリピの教会について、さらなる霊的な成長を求めて祈るのです（9-11節）。というのもそれは、私たちが考える程度のものではないからでしょう。神が引き上げてくださる高さは、私たちの考えが及ばない、計り知れないものがあるのです。
そこでパウロは10節、真にすぐれたものを見分けることができるように、と祈ります。別訳の聖書では、「異なっているものを区別する」ことができるように、とあります。パウロは、何が正しく、倣うべきものか、何が間違っていて、避けるべきものなのか、それを区別できるように、と祈るのです。キリスト者がいよいよキリスト者らしく、教会が教会として建て上げられることを願うならば、当然の祈りです。
3. ピリピの教会のための配慮（1:12-30）
さて、12節、パウロは今置かれている自分の状況について語ります。ピリピの教会の人たちは、パウロが投獄されたことを知り、心配していました。当時、投獄されることは死を意味しました。パウロは、家族のように自分を心配するピリピの教会の人たちを安心させようとして語り始めます。
心配しないでよい、と。見方を変えると、悪いことばかりではない。福音が前進している。そこに注目し欲しい。神が共に働いているのだから安心して欲しいと言います。
実際、キリスト教はそれまで貧しい人たちを中心に広がり、なかなかローマの支配層までには及びませんでした。ところが、パウロの投獄を機会に、今や、親衛隊の人々、つまりローマの軍隊にも福音は伝えられている。これは喜ぶべきことだというわけです（18節）。
そしてパウロは、キリストの素晴らしさが現されるのなら、今の痛みなどなんでもない、と言います（20節）。むしろ私たちはキリストのための苦しみをも賜っている（29節）、と言います。イエスは、私たちの救いのために十字架という苦しみを負ってくださった。イエスの弟子である私たちも、同じ道を歩む者でしょう。イエス以上にはなれないとしても、イエス以下であってはならないのです。キリストの痛みを負う、キリストのために損ができる、そのような人がいるからこそ、教会の働きも成り立って行きます。家庭も、会社でも同じ、人がやりたがらないこと、痛みを負う人がいればこそ、物事は回っていくのです。

Philippians 1: Proud of the Philippian Church
1 Thanking the Philippian Church (1:1-5)
In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul talked about God’s spiritual blessings and how to have happy relationships based on them. In this letter, which begins today, he talks about it in a more concrete way.
First, Paul expresses his gratitude for the good partnership among the Philippians for the sake of his mission. It is a difficult word to translate, but if we were to go out on a limb and translate it, it would be, “I am thankful for the close partnership we have had in spreading the gospel.
This is not to say that the Philippian church was happy that Paul shared the gospel of Christ with them and that they continued to have an easy and pleasant relationship with him. Rather, they were aware of Paul’s zeal to reach more people with the gospel, and they joyfully helped him (Ac 16:12), or rather sacrificially supported him (4:3; 2Co 8:1-5; 9:1-5), to further his work. No wonder Paul is grateful.
2. Praying for the Church in Philippi (1:6-11)
The church in Philippi can be described as a church that has missionary zeal and works for God with love. Yet Paul prays for the Philippian church to continue to grow spiritually (vv. 9-11). This is probably because we do not think of ourselves in such terms. The heights to which God will lift us are immeasurable and beyond our ability to comprehend.
So Paul prays in verse 10 that we may know what is truly excellent. Another translation of the Bible says, “to discern that which is different. Paul is praying to be able to distinguish between what is right and to be imitated, and what is wrong and to be avoided. This is a natural prayer if we want Christians to finally be Christians and the Church to be built up as the Church.
3. consideration for the church at Philippi (1:12-30)
Now in verse 12 Paul talks about his current situation. The church in Philippi was concerned when they learned of Paul’s imprisonment. In those days, imprisonment meant death. Paul begins by trying to reassure the Philippian church members who were worried about him as if he were family.
They need not worry, he says. From another perspective, it is not all bad. The gospel is moving forward. That’s what I want you to focus on. God is working with us, he says, so don’t worry.
In fact, Christianity had spread mainly among the poor and had not reached the ruling class in Rome. But with Paul’s imprisonment as an opportunity, the gospel is now being preached to the SS men, the Roman army. This is something to rejoice about (v.18).
Paul then says that if the excellency of Christ is to be revealed, then the pain of the present is nothing (v. 20). Rather, he says, we too have been gifted with suffering for Christ’s sake (v. 29). Jesus suffered on the cross for our salvation. As disciples of Jesus, we will walk the same path. Even though we cannot be more than Jesus, we must not be less than Jesus. The work of the church is only possible because there are people who can bear the pain of Christ, who can lose for His sake. It is the same in a family, in a company, in a business. Things will turn around only when there are people who are willing to do what others are not willing to do and who are willing to bear the pain.
