1．ヨシュアの失敗と神さまのご計画（9:1–21）
イスラエルの人々がカナンの地に入ったとき、周囲の国々はさまざまな反応を示しました。ある国々は戦いを選びましたが、ギブオンという町の人たちは、戦わずに生き残る方法を考えました。彼らは、遠い国から来た旅人のふりをして、古びた袋や破れたぶどう酒の皮袋、かたくなったパンを持ち、「私たちは遠くから来ました。どうか、平和の約束をしてください」と頼んだのです（9:4–5）。
しかし、実際には彼らはすぐ近くに住んでいました（9:7）。ヨシュアとイスラエルの指導者たちは、この策略にだまされてしまいます。なぜでしょうか。聖書には「彼らは主に伺うことをしなかった」（9:14）と書かれています。つまり、神さまに相談しなかったのです。しかし、神さまはだまされてはいませんでした。むしろ、この出来事を通して、神さまはご自分を信じようとしたギブオン人にあわれみを示されたのです。
ギブオン人は「私たちは、あなたがたの神、主の名を聞いたからです」（9:9）と言いました。これは、ラハブという女性と同じように、神さまを信じようとする心の表れでした。
2．失敗を認めて、前に進む（9:22–27）
ヨシュアは、自分たちがだまされたことを知り、きっと悔しい思いをしたでしょう。しかし、彼は神さまの名前で結んだ約束を破りませんでした。聖書には「主を恐れる者を、主は尊ばれる。損になっても、誓ったことは変えない」（詩篇15:4）とあります。ヨシュアは、ギブオン人に水くみや薪（まき）を運ぶ仕事を任せました（9:21）。これは、申命記29:11に書かれている通りです。
ここで大切なのは、ヨシュアが自分の失敗を認め、神さまの前で誠実に行動したことです。私たちも、ときには間違った選択をしてしまうことがあります。しかし、そのとき大事なのは、自分を責め続けたり、人を恨んだりすることではありません。「失敗を抱えながらも、神さまの前に正しく歩むこと」が大切なのです。
3．ギブオン人のその後と神さまの不思議なご計画
ギブオン人との約束は、後になっても大きな意味を持ちました。たとえば、サウル王がギブオン人を殺したとき、神さまはその罪を問われました（2サムエル21章）。また、ギブオン人はバビロンから帰ってきた後、エルサレムの町の壁を直す仕事にも協力しました（ネヘミヤ3:7）。つまり、かつてはイスラエルから遠ざけられていたギブオン人が、後にはイスラエルを助ける大切な存在になったのです。
このことは、聖書のローマ人への手紙8章28節を思い出させます。「神を愛する人には、すべてのことが益となるように働く」つまり、神さまは人間の失敗さえも用いて、ご自分のご計画を進められるのです。
4．今を生きる私たちへ
私たちも、ときどき「なぜあんな約束をしてしまったのだろう」と後悔することがあります。また、軽い気持ちで決めたことが、大きな責任になってしまうこともあるでしょう。しかし、神さまはそんな私たちを見捨てません。むしろ、その失敗さえも用いて、祝福へと変えてくださいます。大切なのは、失敗を認めて、神さまの前に誠実に歩むことです。そして、神さまの名前で交わした約束を、たとえ損に思えても守ることです。神さまは、そのように誠実に歩もうとする人々を祝福してくださいます。

ヨシュア記9章は、「失敗の中にある神さまのあわれみとご計画」を教えてくれます。ギブオン人の策略、ヨシュアの失敗、そして神さまのあわれみ。これらすべてが、神さまのご計画の中で用いられました。今日も、私たちの過去の失敗や弱さを神さまの前に差し出しながら、誠実に、正しく、共に歩んでいきましょう。主の恵みが豊かにありますように。では、また明日。

The Gibeonites’ Trick and God’s Mercy
1. Joshua’s Mistake and God’s Plan (9:1–21)
When the people of Israel entered the land of Canaan, the nearby nations reacted in different ways.
Some chose to fight. But the people of Gibeon chose a different way.
They wanted to survive without war.
So they made a plan.
They wore old clothes, carried broken wine bags, and brought dry, hard bread.
They said, “We have come from a far country. Please make a peace agreement with us” (Joshua 9:4–5).
But in truth, they lived very close by (9:7).
Joshua and the leaders of Israel believed their story.
Why? Because they did not ask God for guidance (9:14).
They made a decision without praying.
But God was not fooled.
Instead, He used this event to show mercy to the Gibeonites—because they wanted to trust Him.
The Gibeonites said,
“We have heard about the name of the Lord your God” (9:9).
This was a sign of faith—just like Rahab in Jericho.
2. Admitting Mistakes and Moving Forward (9:22–27)
When Joshua found out the truth, he must have felt upset.
But he did not break the promise he made in God’s name.
The Bible says,
“The Lord honors those who fear Him, who keep their promises even when it hurts” (Psalm 15:4).
So Joshua gave the Gibeonites jobs: carrying water and cutting wood (9:21).
This was written in Deuteronomy 29:11.
The important point is this:
Joshua admitted his mistake and acted honestly before God.
We also make wrong choices sometimes.
But what matters is not blaming others or staying in regret.
What matters is walking forward with honesty and faith—even with our mistakes.
3. What Happened to the Gibeonites Later?
The promise with the Gibeonites had long-term effects.
Later, King Saul killed some of them.
God punished Israel for this (2 Samuel 21).
But the Gibeonites stayed faithful.
After the exile, they helped rebuild the wall of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3:7).
The people who were once outsiders became trusted helpers.
This reminds us of Romans 8:28:
“God works all things together for good for those who love Him.”
Even our mistakes can become part of God’s good plan.
4. For Us Today
Sometimes we say, “Why did I make that promise?”
Or we make a quick decision that brings heavy responsibility.
But God does not leave us.
He can use even our failures to bring blessing.
What matters is this:
Admit your mistake.
Walk honestly with God.
And keep your promises—even when it’s hard.
God blesses those who walk with truth and faith.
Final Words
Joshua 9 teaches us that God’s mercy can work even through our mistakes.
The Gibeonites’ trick, Joshua’s failure, and God’s kindness—
All of these were used in God’s plan.
So today, bring your past mistakes and weaknesses to God.
Walk with honesty, faith, and hope.
