1．無にならない宣教の努力（1:1-12）
パウロは、まず挨拶から始めます。親しい弟子テモテであるのに、いささか改まった書き方です。なぜかなとも思いますが、テモテに改めて読んでもらいたいことを伝える、最も重要なことを伝えたいという意識があったためかもしれません。
さて第一の手紙では、キリストは望みとして語られていました。第二の手紙では、いのちと言い換えられています。私たちの信仰は、まさにキリストのいのちの約束に生きることを中心とするものです。テモテに必要とされているのは、そのキリストのいのちにつながることであったのでしょう。
この時テモテは、エペソの教会で困難に直面していました。4節「あなたの涙」とあります。厳しい状況にあったテモテを思いつつ、パウロは真剣に語り掛けようとしていたのです。
第一に、神の賜物を燃え立たせよ（6-7節）と。困難を乗り越えるために、必要なものは、神のいのちそのものです。テモテは、燃え尽きていたのでしょう。もはや先には一歩も進めないという無力感にあるテモテに、パウロは、与えられているものに注目するように勧めます。つまり天来の「力と愛と慎みとの霊」が与えられている（7節）。第一の手紙でも、パウロは「あなたのうちにある聖霊の賜物を軽んじてはいけません」（1テモテ4:14）と勧めています。
その力で今の困難を乗り越えるのです。そのためにはまずゆっくり、じっくり、そのいのちを感じる時が必要です。直ぐに動き出さずに、まず疲れた体は休息をとって休めましょう。そして、疲れた心に、神のいのちが再び燃え出すまで、じっくり神のことばに耳を傾けるのです。そうすれば自分で自分を奮い立たせようとせずとも、心が動き出します。
第二に、自分の立ち位置をはっきりさせることでした。パウロはテモテに、神の御言葉を語ることや、投獄されているパウロとつながっていることを恥じるようなことがあってはならない、と言います（8節）。パウロから離れていく人々が多くいたようです（4:16）。テモテも迷っていたのかもしれません。そんなテモテにパウロは、はっきりと「神の力によって、福音のために私と苦しみをともにしてください」と呼びかけています。そして自分の立場を弁明しています。自分が投獄されているのは、福音宣教のためである、と。
そして、その福音は、神の計画と恵みによるもので、それは永遠の昔から与えられていた、と。福音は、キリストの十字架と復活によって、人の死を打ち滅ぼし、命を与えるものです。その宣教者として投獄されることは、名誉なことで、恥ではないのです。またパウロが投獄され、パウロの宣教が妨げられるのみならず、無に帰せられるような事態が生じたとしても、心配しないことです。神は、私たちの努力を無駄にはしません。たとえ教会に何かがあって、働きが先細っていくように見えるような時であれ、今この時の働きに集中すべきです。神の御計画は変わらないことを信頼することです。
パウロは重ねて言います。信仰と愛をもって、委ねられたものを守っていきなさい。つまりパウロから聞いたことを健全な教えのことばの手本として、しっかり持りなさい、と（13節）。つまり神に信頼しなさい、というわけです。
2．起こっている事柄に目を留める（1:16-18）
パウロは、自分の身の回りで起こっていることについて語ります。ここに出てくるフィゲロとヘルモゲネがどんな人であったのかはよくわかりません（15節）。一説にパウロに敵対し、テモテを支持しなかった教会の指導者たちであったとされます。また、パウロから離れていく者もいました（16節）。デマスは彼を見捨て（2テモテ4:10）、パウロの仲間は遠い宣教地へと旅立っていました。そして偽りの教理が教会には広まっていた（2テモテ2:17-18）。なんともそれは暗い、辛い時期であったと思われます。
しかし、そのような中でも、パウロの心に慰めを与えるような出会いもありました。オネシポロの訪問です。彼の名前には、「利益を生む」という意味があります。彼は、エペソの教会の執事であったようです。オネシポロは、エペソからローマへと長旅をし、大変な苦労をしてパウロを探し出しました。皆が皆見捨てていくわけではないのです。大切な動きにこそ目を留め、力付けられたいものです。
神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように、ではまた明日、このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Second Epistle of Timothy, Chapter 1 The burning of gifts.
1. missionary efforts that are not in vain (1:1-12)
Paul begins with a greeting. It is a somewhat formal way of writing, even though he is a close disciple of Timothy. One wonders why, but it could be because he was aware that he wanted to tell Timothy once again what he wanted him to read and what was most important.
In the first letter, Christ was spoken of as hope. In the Second Letter it is expressed as life. Our faith is about living in Christ’s promise of life. It is likely that what Timothy needed was to be connected to this life of Christ.
At this time Timothy was facing difficulties in the church in Ephesus, v.4: “your tears”. Thinking of Timothy, who was in a difficult situation, Paul tried to speak seriously to him.
First, he wanted to ignite the gifts of God (vv. 6-7). To overcome difficulties, the very life of God is needed. Timothy must have been burnt out. When Timothy feels helpless, unable to go any further, Paul encourages him to focus on what he has been given. He has been given the heavenly “spirit of power, love and humility” (v.7). In the first letter, Paul also encourages us not to “despise the gift of the Holy Spirit which is in you” (1 Timothy 4:14).
Use this power to overcome the difficulties of the present. To do this, we first need time to slow down, to take our time, to feel our life. Do not start moving right away, but let your tired body rest first. Then listen carefully to God’s Word until the life of God begins to burn in your tired heart. Then your heart will begin to move without you having to try to wake yourself up.
Second, he needed to make his position clear. Paul tells Timothy that he should not be ashamed to speak the word of God or to be associated with the imprisoned Paul (v.8). It seems that many people were leaving Paul (4:16). Timothy may have been lost as well. To such a Timothy, Paul clearly calls out, “By the power of God, suffer with me for the sake of the gospel. He then defends his position. He says that he is imprisoned for preaching the gospel.
And that the gospel is of God’s plan and grace given to him from eternity past. The gospel is that which destroys death and gives life to people through the cross and resurrection of Christ. To be imprisoned for preaching it is an honor, not a disgrace. And if Paul’s imprisonment not only hinders his mission, but brings it to nothing, do not worry. God will not waste our efforts. We should focus on the work of the present, even if something happens in the church and the work seems to slow down. Trust that God’s plan is unchanging.
Paul reiterates. Guard with faith and love what has been entrusted to you. In other words, hold fast to what you have heard from Paul as an example of sound doctrine (v.13). In other words, trust in God.
2. Keep an eye on what is going on (1:16-18).
Paul is talking about what is going on around him. It is not clear what kind of people Figello and Hermogenes were (v.15). One theory is that they were church leaders who opposed Paul and did not support Timothy. There were also those who had left Paul (v.16). Demas had deserted him (2 Timothy 4:10), and Paul’s companions had left for distant mission fields. And there was false teaching in the churches (2 Timothy 2:17-18). What a dark and difficult time it must have been.
But even in the midst of all this, there was one encounter that brought comfort to Paul’s heart. It was a visit from Onesiphorus. His name means “profitable. He seems to have been an administrator of the church in Ephesus. Onesiphoros made the long journey from Ephesus to Rome and went to great lengths to find Paul. Not everyone will leave everyone. It is important to keep an eye on important movements and be strengthened by them.
