1．難船したパウロの一行（27:1-20）
パウロは、カエサルに上訴したので、ローマで裁判を受けることになりました。ローマの百卒長ユリアスの率いる護衛に守られ、パウロは、海路2700キロ、陸路180キロにおよぶ長旅が始まりました。主の約束であり、個人的な願いでもあったローマ行きは、実に不思議な形で実現したのです。ただイタリアへの直行便がなかったため、それは沿岸船を乗り継いでの旅となりました。
ある写本によると、パウロたちは15日間でミラに到着したとあります。ミラは、トルコ北岸、小アジアのルキヤ地方にある港町で、彼らはここからようやくイタリアに向かうアレキサンドリアの穀物船に乗り換えることができました。一般にその船の大きさは、長さ55メートル、排水量1200トンほどであったと言います。富山県の射水市に大型練習帆船海王丸が保存されていますが、その大きさの約半分くらいです。海王丸は、定員168名、パウロの一向が乗った船は、276名が乗り込んだとされ、定員の約3倍、かなり無理な乗船だったようです。
おまけに、地中海を航海するには難しい時期に差し掛かっていました。地中海は、冬季の嵐のため、11月になると航海は翌3月まで完全に停止、その前後は、不要不急の航海以外は、避けられたのです。実際、パウロの一行は強い向かい風に妨げられて、イタリアまでの中間地点にあたるクレテ島の「良い港」に到着したのは、約25日後、すでに10月上旬の断食の日を過ぎていました（使徒27:9）。既に海上封鎖になる時期で、これ以上先に進むのは危険でしたが、船長たちは、もう少し良い場所で冬を越したいと考え、ちょうど良い風が吹いてきたのに乗じて、同じ島の西側にあるピニクス港へ向かったのです。翌日には到着するはずでした。しかし暴風に襲われ、漂流すること14日間、約900キロ先のマルタ島に流されてしまいました。
2．神に守られた一行（27:21-44）
ルカはその漂流の旅を記録しています。それは15節「流されるまま」、船の積荷も船具も捨て（18節）、20節「太陽も星も見えない日が何日も続き、暴風が激しく吹き荒れ…助かる望みも今や完全に断たれようとしていた」状況でした。21節、もう食事をする気にもなれない長い時であったようです。ルカの書き記す一語一句が心を捕らえます。
というのも、私たちの人生も、そのようなことばで綴られる日々があるからです。人も組織も信用できない世の荒波にもみくちゃにされて、何もかも失い、露頭に迷う思いとなり、立ち上がる気力もない、ということがあるものでしょう。しかしそのような状況にあってパウロは、同乗者に語り掛けます。24節「恐れることはありません」、25節「元気を出しなさい」パウロは、何時も最善にことを進めてくださる神を信頼していました。実に、十字架を見上げ、神の愛に守られていることを悟った人生は、恐れを知りません。イエスの私たちに対する十字架の愛をしっかり受け止めるならば、乗り越えられない苦難はありません
こうして、14日目、舟はどこかの陸地へと近づきました。まだ陸が見えたわけではありませんでしたが、35節、パウロは、皆に食事をするように促しました。そして彼らは全員無事に陸にあがったのです。
神は実に荒っぽいことをされました。しかし不思議にも、船長の計画では、最低でも翌年4月以降に到着するはずだった旅が一挙に短縮され、年内に到着してしまったというわけです。そして、ローマでのパウロの宣教は、思いのほか早く始まりました。カイザリヤの牢獄に閉じ込められた2年が埋め合わされていくのです。神のなさることはよくわかりません。しかし、神に信頼し、神に身を任せた人生は、私たちの思いを超えた動きになることは確かです。今日も、物事はすべてよきになると神の愛と御計画を信じて歩ませていただきましょう。
Acts 27: Journey to Rome
1. The shipwrecked party of Paul (27:1-20)
Paul had appealed to Caesar and was to be tried in Rome. Protected by an escort led by Julius, a Roman centurion, Paul began his long journey of 2,700 km by sea and 180 km by land. The Lord’s promise and personal desire to go to Rome was fulfilled in a very strange way. Since there were no direct flights to Italy, the journey was made by coastal ship.
According to one manuscript, Paul and his team arrived at Mila in 15 days. Mila is a port city on the northern coast of Turkey, in the Lukya region of Asia Minor, from where they could eventually transfer to the Alexandria grain ship bound for Italy. Generally speaking, the size of this ship was about 55 meters long and had a carrying capacity of about 1,200 tons. The large training sailboat Kaiwomaru, preserved in the city of Imizu in Toyama Prefecture, is about half that size. The Kaiwomaru had a capacity of 168 passengers, while the ship Paul’s crew boarded is said to have carried 276 passengers, about three times its capacity.
In addition, it was a difficult time of year to sail the Mediterranean. Because of winter storms in the Mediterranean, voyages were completely suspended from November until the following March, and in the period before and after, voyages were avoided except those that were not necessary or urgent. In fact, Paul’s party was hampered by a strong headwind and arrived at the “good harbor” of Crete, halfway to Italy, some 25 days later, after the fast day in early October (Ac 27:9). It was already time for a sea blockade and it would have been dangerous to go any further, but the captains wanted to winter in a better place, so they took advantage of a good wind and sailed to the port of Pinnix, on the western side of the same island. They planned to arrive the next day. However, a storm broke out and after 14 days of drifting, they were swept to the island of Malta, about 900 km away.
2. The group protected by God (27:21-44)
Luke records their journey. Luke records their journey: v. 15, “as they were being carried away,” abandoning their ship’s cargo and equipment (v. 18); v. 20, “For many days they could see neither the sun nor the stars, and the storm blew violently… Any hope of their rescue was now completely cut off. It was a long time before he even felt like eating. Every word Luke writes is gripping.
We are all in such a situation because there are days in our lives that are written in such words. There will be times when we are tossed about by the stormy seas of a world where people and organizations cannot be trusted, where we lose everything, where we feel lost, and where we do not have the strength to get up again. In such a situation, Paul tells his fellow travelers, “Do not be afraid” (v. 24) and “Be of good cheer” (v. 25), trusting in God who always does the best. Indeed, a life that looks up to the cross and realizes that it is protected by God’s love knows no fear. When we firmly accept the love of the cross of Jesus for us, there is no hardship that we cannot overcome!
So, on the 14th day, the boat approached some land. Although there was no land in sight, verse 35, Paul urged everyone to eat. And they all made it safely to land.
God had indeed done a very hard thing. Strangely enough, the captain’s plan was to arrive at least in April of the following year, but the journey was shortened and they arrived before the end of the year. Paul’s mission in Rome began earlier than expected. The two years he spent in prison in Caesarea were made up for. We don’t know what God is doing. But we can be sure that a life of trust and surrender to God will go beyond our thoughts. Today, let us walk with faith in God’s love and plan for all things to work out.
