「歴代誌第一の第5章」は、多くの人名が並んでいて、一見すると退屈に感じるかもしれません。しかし、この章には、イスラエルの歴史が大きく動いた「決定的な瞬間」がいくつも記されています。具体的には、長男ルベンの失敗、ガド族の勝利、そしてマナセ族の悲劇という三つの出来事です。これらを通して、聖書が私たちに伝えようとしている大切なメッセージを一緒に受け止めていきましょう。
1．章全体の流れをつかもう
まず、第5章では、ヨルダン川の東側に住んでいた三つの部族――ルベン、ガド、マナセ――の家系と歴史がまとめられています。章の構成は以下のようになっています。
1～10節は、ルベン族の系図。イスラエルの長男ルベンは、なぜその特別な権利を失ったのかを押さえることが大切です。
次の11～22節は、ガド族の系図。戦いが得意と言われるガド族、彼らは、どうして勝利できたのかがポイントです。
最後の23～26節は、マナセ族の系図、彼らはなぜアッシリア帝国に連れ去られてしまったのかを考えましょう。では、順番にポイントを見てまいります。
2．ルベンの失敗――長男の特権が失われた理由
ルベンはイスラエルの長男でしたが、父親の寝床を汚すという大きな過ちを犯しました。当時、父の側女と関係を持つことは、父の財産を奪おうとする行為だとみなされ、親に見放されても仕方がありませんでした。そのため、彼は、長男としての権利を失ってしまいます。
注目すべきは、その権利がヨセフに移され、王としての役割はユダ族に与えられた点です。これは、単なる血筋や偶然ではない、神の主権による秩序の強調です。長子権はヨセフに、王権はユダに――この二重の分配は、イスラエル全体の歴史的バランスを示すものです。なぜなら、ヨセフの子孫は北王国の主要部族（エフライムとマナセ）を形成し、ユダは南王国の中心となったからです。捕囚後にこの事実を記録することで、歴代誌は「南北の兄弟関係を回復し、全イスラエルの統一性を再確認し、さらにダビデ契約とメシア的希望に立ち返るべきメッセージを伝えているのです（エゼキエル16:47も参照）。
3．ガド族の勝利――勝因は礼拝だった
ガド族は訓練を受けた勇敢な戦士でしたが、勝利の本当の理由は神に頼ったことでした。聖書にも「神は彼らの願いを聞き入れられた」（5:20）とあります。ここで使われているヘブル語עָתַר（アータル）には、「祈りが叶った」という意味だけでなく、「礼拝者の切実な願いが受け入れられた」というニュアンスがあります。つまり、勝利のカギは礼拝の心にあったのです。努力や能力はもちろん大切ですが、最後に勝利をもたらすのは、神を信じて礼拝する姿勢です。神はより頼む者を決して拒むことがありません。

4．マナセ族の悲劇――礼拝から離れた代償
マナセ族の話もとても大切です。彼らは本来礼拝すべき神を忘れ、偶像を拝んでしまいました。そのため、アッシリア帝国に滅ぼされます。歴代誌の著者は、この出来事を後の時代の人々への大切な警告として記しました。「神を礼拝しなくなれば、イスラエルは存続できない」と伝えていたのです。というのも、彼らの先祖は神によってエジプトの奴隷状態から救い出された人々でした。しかし、その大きな恵みを忘れ、神から離れてしまったことで、人間としてのまごころも失っていたのです。この教訓は、現代を生きる私たちにも通じます。大切にすべき関係や信頼を軽く見てしまえば、やはり当然その報いがやってくるのです。礼拝することをやめれば、神からの祝福も失われてしまいます。それはつまり、最も大事な神との関係を疎かにしたことの結果です。
最後に、今あなたの人生の中心にあるものは何でしょうか。大事なものをきちんと大事にする。最初にすべきことを優先する。神を信じる人にとって、まず大切なのは神を礼拝することです。ぜひ、この基本を意識して今日一日を過ごしてみてください。神は祝福をくださるお方です。それでは、また明日。

Chapter 5 summarizes the genealogy and history of three tribes living east of the Jordan River—Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh. The structure is as follows:
Verses 1–10: Reuben’s genealogy. Why did Israel’s firstborn lose his special rights? That’s key.
Verses 11–22: Gad’s genealogy. Known as skilled warriors, why did they win their battles? That’s the point.
Verses 23–26: Manasseh’s genealogy. Why were they taken away by the Assyrian Empire? Let’s think about that.
2. Reuben’s Failure – Why the Firstborn Lost His Privilege
Reuben was Israel’s firstborn, but he committed a serious sin by defiling his father’s bed. In those days, sleeping with a father’s concubine was seen as trying to steal his property. So Reuben lost his birthright.
Notice this: the birthright was given to Joseph, and kingship to Judah. This was not random—it shows God’s sovereign order. The birthright went to Joseph, kingship to Judah. This double distribution shaped Israel’s history: Joseph’s descendants formed the northern kingdom (Ephraim and Manasseh), and Judah became the center of the southern kingdom. By recording this after the exile, Chronicles calls Israel to restore unity and return to the hope of the Davidic covenant and the Messiah (see Ezekiel 16:47).
3. Gad’s Victory – The Secret Was Worship
Gad’s tribe had brave, trained warriors. But the real reason for victory was their trust in God. The Bible says, “He answered their prayers” (5:20). The Hebrew word עָתַר (atar) means not only “prayer was answered” but also “the deep plea of a worshiper was accepted.” Victory came from a heart of worship. Effort and skill matter, but final victory comes from trusting and worshiping God. He never rejects those who rely on Him.

4. Manasseh’s Tragedy – The Cost of Leaving Worship
Manasseh’s story is also vital. They forgot God and worshiped idols. So the Assyrian Empire destroyed them. The writer of Chronicles gives this as a warning: “If Israel stops worshiping God, it cannot survive.” Their ancestors were freed from slavery in Egypt by God’s grace. But forgetting that grace, they turned away—and lost their integrity. This lesson applies today: if we neglect what matters most, consequences follow. Stop worshiping, and blessings disappear. It’s the result of ignoring our relationship with God.
