イスラエルという国は、とても不思議な国です。この時代、イスラエルの人々は、自分たちの国を再び建て直そうと、捕虜となっていた場所から戻ってきました。本当は、バビロンに残ることも、他の暮らしやすい国に移ることもできたのです。しかし彼らは、わざわざ困難な道を選び、荒れ果てたエルサレムへ戻る決断をしました。では、いったい何が彼らをそこまで動かしたのでしょうか。今回は、歴代誌第一9章を通して、その理由を一緒に探っていきます。
1. ここまでの流れを押さえよう
歴代誌第一の1章から8章までは、アダムから始まるイスラエルの長い系図がずっと続きます。なぜこんなにも多くの名前が書かれているのでしょうか。それは、イスラエルの歴史が「神とイスラエルの契約の物語」だということを伝えるためです。9章の最初（1節）では「全イスラエルは系図に記載された」とあるように、これまでの流れがまとめられています。
その後の2節からは、2つの大きな系図が登場します。1つ目は、バビロン捕囚から戻り、首都エルサレムの再建のために集まった人々の系図（2～34節）。2つ目は、イスラエルで最初の王であったサウルの家系の系図（35～44節）です。
このように、イスラエルの民の流れは、古代から今に至るまで脈々と受け継がれ、バビロン捕囚という大きな苦しみを経ても、その血筋や信仰は消えませんでした。これは、神との契約が今も生きているということを伝えているのです。
イスラエルの人々は、モーセの時代に約束されていたように、不忠実になったことで神から裁きを受け、国をバビロンに滅ぼされて捕虜となりました。しかし神は彼らを完全には見捨てず、やがて彼らはまたエルサレムに帰ることができました。しかも、その中にはユダ族だけでなく、エフライムやマナセといった、もともとの北王国の人々も含まれていたのです。これは、イスラエル全体の回復への希望を表しています。
2. なぜエルサレムを選んだのか？
ネヘミヤ記を読むと、当時のエルサレムは便利な場所ではありませんでした。農業に向いておらず、暮らしも苦労の連続。実際、10人に1人しか都に住めず、多くの人が周辺で生活していたことが記録されています。それでも彼らは、エルサレムに戻り、礼拝を再び始めました。一体なぜなのでしょうか。
それは、彼らにとって神の言葉に従うことが、人間として損か得かということよりも大きな意味を持っていたからです。エルサレムの再建は、単なる町づくりではなく、神が約束したことに応える行為でした。そして約束通りに回復されたこと自体が、彼らにとって大きな喜びだったのです。
3. 地味な役割で支えられる礼拝
9章の後半では、エルサレムに住む人々がどんな働きを担っていたかが紹介されます。門番、宝物庫の管理、道具の準備、香りのもの（香料）の調合、供えパンの用意、そして歌うたい――。現代風にいえば、受付係や建物管理、聖餐式の準備、聖歌隊などにあたります。
これらは決して目立つ仕事ではありません。夜の見回りや開錠、毎日のこまごまとした準備など、地味で表には出ない役割です。しかも、彼らは神殿の再建だけでなく、自分たちの暮らしの再建や安定という課題も抱えていました。そんな中でも、みんなが必要とされる役割を丁寧に果たし、礼拝をしっかり支えたのです。歴代誌の著者は、これらの地味な働きが「神と結んだ契約の物語」を支えていることを伝えたいのです。
4. サウル家の系図は希望を語る
最後に、サウル王の家系の系図がもう一度出てきます。これは8章の繰り返しのようですが、9章で再び載せられるのは理由があります。それは、次の10章でサウル王朝の終わりが語られる前に、「どんな家系でも神の記憶から消えない」ことを示すためです。
人であれば、失敗した家系は切り捨てて終わりにしてしまいます。しかし神はそうしませんでした。サウル家は王位を失った後も、エルサレムにとどまることが許されています。 ここに神の憐れみや希望を見ることができます。失敗や過去の痛みをもった人でさえ、神の民の歴史に組み込まれ、忘れられることがない――これが歴代誌が伝えている「回復の物語」です。
5. この章が問いかけてくること
この章は、私たちに「便利さや楽さ」よりも、「自分たちの使命」を大切にすることを教えています。困難なエルサレムにあえて戻った人々の姿から、「神の言葉に従うことには大きな価値がある」と語られているのです。また、表には出ない地味な働きが、共同体の礼拝を支え、整える基礎になっていることも伝えています。開錠や準備といった目立たない仕事が礼拝を支えているのです。現代の教会も、このような文化を大事にしていきたいものです。
さらに、失敗した人や、つらい過去のある人でも排除せず、みんなで回復のドラマに参加する――それが神の望まれる姿です。このように分断を乗り越えて一致することこそ、本来の私たちのあり方だと教えてくれます。
このようにして、歴代誌第一9章はただの名前のリストではありません。その背後には、約束を守り続ける神の誠実さ、そしてその神に応え、エルサレムを再建した人たちの信仰や誠実な姿が映し出されているのです。それでは、また明日。
Season 6: 1 Chronicles 9 – A Gentle Explanation: The Story of Jerusalem’s Restoration
Israel is a very special nation. At this time in history, the people of Israel decided to rebuild their country. They returned from the land where they had been captives. In fact, they could have stayed in Babylon or moved to other countries where life was easier. But they chose a hard way and went back to ruined Jerusalem. Why did they make such a decision? What moved them so deeply? Today, we will look at 1 Chronicles chapter 9 and try to find the answer.
1. Let’s Review the Story So Far
Chapters 1 to 8 of 1 Chronicles are full of long lists of names, starting from Adam. Why so many names? Because Israel’s history is a story of a covenant between God and His people. Chapter 9 begins with a summary: “All Israel was listed in the genealogies.” Then, from verse 2, we see two big family lists. The first list (verses 2–34) shows the people who returned from Babylon and gathered to rebuild Jerusalem. The second list (verses 35–44) shows the family of Saul, Israel’s first king.
This tells us something important: even after the great suffering of the Babylonian exile, Israel’s faith and bloodline did not disappear. God’s covenant was still alive. Long ago, God promised blessings to Israel through Moses. But when they became unfaithful, they were judged, their country was destroyed, and they were taken as captives. Still, God did not abandon them completely. Later, they came back to Jerusalem. And not only the tribe of Judah returned—people from Ephraim and Manasseh, from the old northern kingdom, were also included. This shows hope for the restoration of all Israel.
2. Why Did They Choose Jerusalem?
The book of Nehemiah tells us that Jerusalem was not an easy place to live. It was not good for farming, and life was hard. In fact, only one out of ten people lived in the city; most lived outside. Yet they returned and started worship again. Why?
Because obeying God’s word was more important than comfort or profit. Rebuilding Jerusalem was not just building a town. It was answering God’s promise. And seeing that promise come true was their greatest joy.
3. Worship Supported by Humble Roles
The second part of chapter 9 shows what jobs the people had in Jerusalem. There were gatekeepers, managers of the treasure rooms, people who prepared tools, mixed perfumes, baked the bread for offerings, and singers. Today, we might call them ushers, building managers, communion helpers, and choir members.
These jobs were not glamorous. They included night watch, opening doors, and daily preparations—quiet, unseen work. And remember, these people were also trying to rebuild their own homes and lives. Yet they faithfully did their tasks to support worship. The writer of Chronicles wants us to see that these humble jobs were part of God’s covenant story.
4. Saul’s Family Speaks of Hope
Finally, we see the family of King Saul again. It looks like a repeat of chapter 8, but there is a reason. Before chapter 10 tells of Saul’s death, chapter 9 reminds us: no family is forgotten by God. People might cut off a failed family, but God does not. Even after losing the throne, Saul’s family was allowed to live in Jerusalem. This shows God’s mercy and hope. Even those with failure or pain are included in God’s people. This is the message of restoration in Chronicles.
5. What Does This Chapter Ask Us Today?
This chapter teaches us to value our mission more than comfort. The people who returned to hard life in Jerusalem show us that obeying God’s word is worth more than convenience. It also teaches that quiet, humble work supports the whole community. Opening doors and preparing things may seem small, but they make worship possible. Churches today should honor this culture.
It also tells us to welcome people with failures or painful pasts. God wants everyone to join the story of restoration. And it calls us to overcome divisions and live in unity. So, 1 Chronicles 9 is not just a list of names. Behind it, we see God’s faithfulness and the people’s faith as they rebuild Jerusalem. See you next time!
