3．戦いの流れとイスラエルの敗北
イスラエルとペリシテの間で戦争が起こりました。ペリシテはエクロンから北上してアフェクに陣を敷き、イスラエルはエベン・エゼルに布陣します。戦いはイスラエルの大敗に終わりました。民は「なぜ神は私たちを打ったのか？」と問い、契約の箱を戦場に持ち込みます。ギリシア語訳旧約聖書（七十人訳）によれば、この戦いはペリシテ側からの攻撃で、イスラエルはやむなく迎え撃つ形だったことがわかります。
この敗北は、イスラエル史上、バビロンによるエルサレム陥落（紀元前586年）に匹敵するほどの大きな危機でした。しかし、これは預言者サムエルがすでに警告していた神の裁きでもありました（サムエル記第一3章）。神の言葉を聞かず、形だけの信仰に頼った結果だったのです。

5．ペリシテ人の反応とイスラエルの危機
契約の箱がイスラエルの陣営に来たと聞いたペリシテ人は、「だれがこの力ある神々の手からわれわれを救い出してくれるのか」と恐れました（4:8）。これは、異邦人である彼らが神の力を認めた瞬間です。神の主権はイスラエルだけでなく、すべての民に及ぶのです。その結果、ペリシテは士気を高めて戦い、イスラエルはさらに敗北します。祭司エリは神の栄光が去ったことを悟り、イスラエルは存続の危機に直面しました。
6．信仰の本質と回復の道
しかし、ここから神による回復の物語が始まります。敗北と絶望の中で、民は悔い改めて神に立ち返ります。サムエル記7章では、偶像を捨て、サムエルの導きのもとで神に向かう姿が描かれています。信仰とは、形式や感情ではなく、日々神の御心を求め、謙虚な心で歩むことです。神は、形だけの信仰ではなく、真実な心を求めておられます。

This chapter tells the story of a battle between Israel and the Philistines.
The people of Israel believed that if they brought the Ark of the Covenant to the battlefield, they would win. But this was not true faith. Their relationship with God had become only a form. Because of this, they suffered a great defeat.

The Philistines lived near the sea in the land of Canaan.
They had five main cities: Ekron, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gaza, and Gath.
They worshiped a god named Dagon and often used religion and military power together.
During the time of the Judges, they were strong enemies of Israel. Because of this, the tribe of Dan had to move to the north (Judges 18). - The battle and Israel’s defeat
The Philistines moved north and set up camp at Aphek.
Israel camped at Ebenezer.
The Philistines attacked, and Israel had to fight back.
According to the Greek translation of the Old Testament (Septuagint), Israel did not start the fight.
But they lost badly.
This defeat was as serious as the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC.
It was also part of God’s judgment, which the prophet Samuel had already warned about (1 Samuel 3).
The people did not listen to God’s word and trusted in religious form instead of true faith. - What happens when faith becomes only a form?
The people thought that bringing the Ark would give them victory.
But they treated it like a magic object.
They trusted in something they could see, instead of seeking God’s will.

When the Philistines saw the Ark in Israel’s camp, they were afraid.
They said, “Who can save us from these powerful gods?” (4:8)
Even though they were not Israelites, they recognized God’s power.

The Philistines became brave and fought harder.
Israel lost again.
The priest Eli realized that God’s glory had left Israel.

In chapter 7, the people turn away from idols and return to God.
Samuel leads them back.
