Dr. Makoto
[Season 6] Proverbs 19: Why Having Money Doesn’t Always Mean Being Rich
1. Can Money Make a Person Rich?
As income grows, people gather around us. Proverbs 19:4 acknowledges this reality: “Wealth adds many friends.” Yet verse 1 says that the poor person who walks in integrity is better than one who is dishonest and foolish in speech. Proverbs does not determine a person’s worth by whether they have wealth. Why is that?
2. Before Reading This Chapter
Proverbs 19 is a collection of short sayings. Though each stands on its own, the contrast between the person of integrity and the fool runs through the whole chapter. “The fear of the Lord” in verse 23 does not mean being afraid of God. It means living humbly as one created by God. Let us also remember that our daily life is watched over by God’s eyes.
3. The Flow of This Chapter
Now, let us look at the flow of this chapter.
Verses 1-9: “Integrity Matters More Than Wealth” Proverbs plainly portrays the harsh reality that wealth draws many friends while poverty can cause even a brother to stay away. But this does not mean Proverbs approves of that reality. Verse 1 says the poor person who walks with integrity is better. People measure others by their wealth, but what God notices is the character of integrity. That is why verses 5 and 9 repeat that a false witness will not go unpunished.
Verses 10-17: “Wisdom for the Home and a Warning Against Laziness” Here, sayings about daily life are gathered. Verse 13 compares a house filled with constant quarreling to a roof that never stops leaking — a vivid and understandable image. Verse 14 says that house and wealth are inherited from parents, but a wise wife comes from the Lord. Verse 17 calls giving to the poor “lending to the Lord.” This does not mean we are putting God in our debt. Rather, God receives that act as done to himself. It is not a promise that giving will always make us rich. God simply has deep concern for a person’s integrity.
Verses 18-23: “Listening to Counsel, and the Lord’s Plan” Verse 20 urges us to listen to counsel and accept discipline. Verse 21 says that many plans are in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that will stand. This does not mean we should not make plans. It means remembering that it is God who establishes them. We live each day under God’s watchful eyes. That is why verse 23 says that the fear of the Lord leads to life, and one who has it rests satisfied.
Verses 24-29: “The Foolishness of Turning Away from Discipline” Here the word “mocker” appears three times — one who scorns and laughs at correction. Verse 27 warns that if we stop listening to instruction, we will stray from the words of knowledge. Verse 29 closes the chapter by saying that judgment is prepared for such people. What is conveyed is God’s sovereignty and will.
4. A Message for Us
In life, having money does not always mean being rich. Even when possessions increase, if there is conflict and dishonesty, our richness is damaged like a house with a leaking roof. We tend to measure others—and ourselves—by what we own. But Proverbs frees us from that way of seeing. God does not look at wealth, but at a life that fears the Lord and walks with integrity. Verse 23 tells us that the one who fears the Lord comes to life and rests content. Of course, this is not a promise of becoming rich. Let us make fearing the Lord and walking with integrity the center of our daily lives.
