調子のいい言葉や耳ざわりのよい説明、責任の所在があいまいな発言——こうした言葉が軽く扱われる社会の中で、私たちは知らず知らずのうちに疲れてしまうのです。詩篇12篇は、まさにこのような感覚と深く響き合う詩です。この詩は、「言葉が壊れてしまった社会」で何を信頼して生きるべきか、静かに投げかけています。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
詩篇12篇は、詩篇1〜41篇からなる第一巻に含まれる、個人の嘆きの詩です。王の勝利や国の繁栄をたたえる王権詩とは違い、社会の中で誠実さが失われていく現実に直面した、一人の祈りが語られています。
具体的な成立年代は分かっていません。ダビデの時代を思わせる要素もありますが、内容は特定の歴史状況に限定されません。「忠実な者の消滅」や「言葉の腐敗」といった主題は、後の預言書、たとえばイザヤ書の社会批判にも繋がる、普遍的な問題意識を持っています。
3．本篇の流れ
それでは、詩篇12篇の流れを詩人の言葉に沿って辿ってみましょう。
1–2節「誠実な言葉が消えた世界」詩人は、敬虔な者がいなくなり、人々が互いに偽りを語る現実を嘆きます。これは単に嘘つきが増えた、という話ではありません。言葉を聞いても、何が本当かわからなくなってしまった社会への痛みが表現されています。
3–4節「言葉による支配への怒り」へつらいや傲慢な舌が社会を動かしていると述べます。言葉が真実を伝えるものではなく、相手を操作するための手段となってしまっているのです。
5節「神の声が割り込む転換点」ここで場面が変わります。主ご自身が「今、わたしは立ち上がる」と語り、踏みにじられた者を救うと宣言します。
6–7節「試された言葉への信頼」人の言葉と違い、主の言葉は精錬された銀のように純粋で、守る力があると告白されています。
8節「救済後も続く現実」しかし、それでも社会には卑しいことがはびこり続けます。詩は解決で終わるのではなく、なお緊張感を残したまま締めくくられています。
4．本章の読み方
伝統的な説教では、主の言葉の真実さや信じる者が守られる希望が語られてきました。不誠実が多い世界であっても、神は誠実であるという慰めがあります。
ただし、文脈を重視すると、詩篇12篇は希望だけで終わっていないことに気を付ける必要があります。救済の宣言があっても現実はすぐには変わりません。悪は完全に消え去らず、なお人の間に遺り続けています。
この詩は、現実の悪から目を背けて神の言葉を信じるように促しているのではありません。現実の悪をしっかり見つめつつ、神の言葉に心を向け続ける生き方が示されています。
5．現代の私たちに対する適用
情報があふれ、言葉の価値が揺らぐ時代に、詩篇12篇はこう語ります。「何が本当かわからないことがあっても、信ずべき言葉を見失うな。」と。
人の言葉が混じり物だらけであるからこそ、精錬され、試された主の言葉を見分け、そこに立って歩むことが求められています。偽りの声に流されず、現実を見据えながら、なお神の言葉に信頼を置いて生きる――それが、この詩篇が私たちに示す、現実的な信仰の姿と言えるでしょう。

Psalm 12 — Season 6 Living Surrounded by Words We Can No Longer Trust
1. Introduction: “Can You Really Trust That Word?” — A Psalm That Begins with Doubt
Have you ever received a payment reminder email and noticed that the sender’s address is slightly different from what it claims to be? Experiences like this are not unusual today. We live surrounded by a massive amount of words every day. But at times, we stop and wonder, “How much of this can I really trust?”
Smooth words, pleasant explanations, and statements with unclear responsibility—when such words fill society, we become tired without even noticing it. Psalm 12 deeply resonates with this feeling. This psalm quietly asks what we should rely on when words themselves have broken down.
2. Historical and Literary Context
Psalm 12 belongs to Book One of Psalms (Psalms 1–41) and is a personal lament. Unlike royal psalms that celebrate victory or national strength, this psalm speaks from the prayer of one person facing a society where faithfulness is disappearing.
The exact historical setting is unknown. While it may reflect the time of David, the content is not limited to one period. Themes such as “the disappearance of the faithful” and “the corruption of words” connect with later prophetic criticism found in books like Isaiah. The psalm addresses a problem that remains universal.
3. Flow of the Psalm
Verses 1–2: A World Where Faithful Words Have Disappeared
The psalmist laments that godly people are gone and everyone speaks lies to one another. This is not simply about an increase in lying. It expresses the pain of living in a society where, even after hearing words, people can no longer tell what is true.
Verses 3–4: Anger Toward Power Used Through Words
Flattering lips and proud tongues are described as ruling society. Words no longer aim to speak truth but are used to control others. Language has become a tool of domination.
Verse 5: The Turning Point — God’s Voice Enters
Here the scene changes. The LORD himself speaks: “Now I will arise.” God declares that he will bring salvation to those being oppressed and trampled down.
Verses 6–7: Trust in Words That Have Been Tested
Unlike human speech, the words of the LORD are pure, like silver refined in a furnace. God’s words are trustworthy and have the power to protect.
Verse 8: Reality That Continues Even After Salvation Is Promised
Still, worthlessness continues to spread among people. The psalm does not end with resolution. Tension remains, showing that the world does not instantly change.
4. How to Read This Psalm
Traditionally, Psalm 12 has been read as a message of comfort, emphasizing the truth of the LORD’s words and the promise that God protects the faithful. These themes are important.
However, when we respect the context, we must notice that the psalm does not end with simple hope. Even after God’s declaration, reality remains difficult. Evil does not disappear immediately.
This psalm does not urge us to deny reality and blindly trust God’s word. Instead, it teaches us to face the brokenness of society honestly while continuing to place our hearts in the LORD’s tested words.
5. Meaning for Us Today
In an age flooded with information and unstable words, Psalm 12 speaks clearly: “Even if not everything changes, do not lose the word you trust.”
Because human words are mixed and unreliable, we are called to discern and stand on the refined and tested words of the LORD. Without being swept away by false voices, we look at reality as it is and still choose to rely on God’s word. This psalm shows us a realistic form of faith that is still needed today.
