Dr. Makoto
[Season 6] Proverbs 28: How Does Righteousness Support Society?
1. Introduction: Is Righteousness Only a Personal Matter?
When we hear “a righteous person,” we may picture someone who is honest, hardworking, and kind. These qualities matter. Yet the righteous person in Proverbs 28 is more than a morally respectable individual. This person seeks the Lord, listens to his instruction, and walks with integrity. Such a life affects not only the individual, but also families, communities, and society as a whole.
2. Historical and Literary Context
Proverbs 28 repeatedly contrasts the righteous with the wicked, and those who walk with integrity with those who follow crooked paths. These contrasts reveal two directions in life and the destinations to which they lead. Instruction is also a repeated theme in verses 4, 7, and 9. Biblical wisdom is not merely experience or practical skill; it is rooted in listening to God’s instruction.
3. The Flow of the Chapter
Verses 1–5: The Righteous and the Wicked
The righteous are described as bold as a young lion. Their confidence does not come from self-reliance, but from seeking the Lord and discerning what is right. The chapter also says that a discerning leader brings stability, showing that righteousness matters in public leadership as well as private character.
Verses 6–12: Wealth and Wisdom
A poor person who walks with integrity is better than a rich person whose ways are crooked. Proverbs is less concerned with how much wealth a person has than with how it was gained and how it is used. Our relationship with money reveals both wisdom and character.
Verses 13–18: Confessing and Turning Away
“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper.” The problem is not simply failure, but hiding wrongdoing and continuing in it. To confess and renounce sin means to acknowledge it, leave that path, and change direction. The wise do not justify themselves; they allow their way to be corrected.
Verses 19–28: Righteousness That Supports the Community
These verses speak of diligence, dishonest gain, care for the poor, and trust in the Lord. Verse 27 blesses those who give to the poor, while verse 28 says that when the wicked perish, the righteous increase. Righteousness protects the vulnerable and helps restore a just social order.
4. A Message for Us
The center of Proverbs 28 is not personal success, but righteousness rooted in seeking the Lord, receiving instruction, and walking with integrity. It reaches into the way we face our failures, gain and use money, treat vulnerable people, and exercise leadership.
Do our words, judgments, and choices strengthen trust around us, or do they protect only our own interests? Let us keep this question before us as we listen to God’s Word together.
See you tomorrow.
