1．本当に心に残る出来事は何も残さない
私たちは写真や思い出をたくさん残しますが、本当に心に残る出来事については、ほとんど記録をしないことが多いのではないでしょうか。あの日に感じた不安や流した涙を、データとして残すことはありません。しかし、詩篇56篇は、私たちが忘れてしまいたいほどつらかった不安や涙も、神がすべて覚えていてくださると語っています。この詩は、神の愛の深さを優しく伝えてくれる詩です。
2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈
詩篇56篇の表題には「ペリシテ人がガテでダビデを捕えたとき」と記されており、これはサムエル記第一21章の出来事に関連付けられて読まれてきました。ダビデは、自分を殺そうとするサウル王から逃れ、敵国であるペリシテ人のもとに身を寄せるという、とても不安定な状況にいました。ただし、この詩はダビデが実際に体験した出来事をそのまま表現したものというよりも、その経験を基にして、後に共同体の礼拝でも使われる誰でも祈ることができる詩としてまとめられたものだと考えられています。
さらに、詩篇55篇から57篇は意図的に並べられていると見る説もあります。55篇では心が揺れ動き、56篇では恐れの中でも信頼を語り始め、そして57篇ではついに賛美へと進んでいく流れがあるのです。詩篇56篇はその中間に位置し、恐れと信頼が同時に存在する信仰の姿を描いています。
3．本篇の流れ
それでは、詩篇56篇の内容を順に見ていきましょう。
1〜4節「恐れの中での最初の信頼」詩人は、敵に苦しめられている状況を率直に語りつつ、「恐れるときも、私はあなたに信頼します」と告白しています。ここでは、恐れと信頼が同時に語られています。
5〜7節「見えない攻撃の中で」敵が常に悪だくみをして命を狙っている様子が描かれます。この部分では、直接的な暴力だけでなく、中傷や監視といった目に見えにくい圧力があり、詩人の不安がより深まっています。
8〜11節「神は涙を覚えておられる」詩の流れが大きく変わります。「あなたは私のさすらいを記録されています」と、神が苦しみを見逃さず、しっかり覚えておられることに気づき、その確信から「私は恐れません」と再び信頼の告白をしています。
12〜13節「信頼から一歩踏み出す」詩人は「誓いを果たします」と語ります。どんな誓いなのかは具体的に書かれていませんが、彼は苦しみの中で神に誓いを立て、今、まだ何事かが起こる前に、その約束を守ろうとしています。神が誓いを守らせてくださると確信し、感謝のささげ物をしようと決心しているのです。大切なのは、ご利益を求めてではなく、神の前で誠実に生きることを決意している点です。
4．本篇の読み方
この詩の中心は「恐れが消えること」ではなく、「恐れの中で信頼し続けること」にあります。4節と11節には、似た言葉で信頼の告白が繰り返されており、それが強く強調されています。
特に議論になるのは8節の「涙の皮袋」です。これは文字通りにではなく、神が苦しみをひとつも忘れないというたとえとして理解するのが一般的です。ここで大切なのは、「神が報いてくださること」よりも、「神が必ず見ていてくださる」という安心感です。
5．現代の私たちへの適用
あなたの人生は、ただ流されて消えていく儚いものではありません。私たちは悩み、心が不安で落ち着かない時や、どうすればよいかわからなくなる時、人知れず心が揺れることもあります。しかし、神はそんな私たちのすべてをちゃんと見てくださっているのです。
ですから、孤独な苦しみの中でも「今日も神に信頼して歩もう」、そして「約束通り感謝のささげ物をささげよう」、と心の中でひとことつぶやいてみてください。それが、詩篇56篇が教えている信仰のあり方です。ではまた明日。
[Season 6] Psalm 56 Explained in a Simple Way
1. Introduction
We keep many photos and memories, but we often do not record the events that remain deeply in our hearts.
We do not save our fears from that day or the tears we shed as data.
However, Psalm 56 tells us that even the fears and tears we wish to forget are all remembered by God.
This psalm gently shows us the depth of God’s love.
2. Historical and Literary Background
The title of Psalm 56 says, “When the Philistines seized David in Gath,” and this has been connected to the event in 1 Samuel 21.
David fled from King Saul, who wanted to kill him, and went to the land of the Philistines, his enemies.
He was in a very unstable situation.
However, this psalm is not only a direct description of that event.
It was shaped later into a prayer that anyone can use, and it was used in the worship of the community.
Some scholars think that Psalms 55 to 57 are arranged on purpose.
Psalm 55 shows a shaken heart.
Psalm 56 begins to speak trust even in fear.
Psalm 57 moves forward into praise.
Psalm 56 stands between them and shows a life of faith where fear and trust exist at the same time.
3. The Flow of the Psalm
Let us now look at the flow of Psalm 56.
Verses 1–4: “First trust in the middle of fear.”
The writer speaks honestly about being troubled by enemies.
At the same time, he says, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.”
Here, fear and trust are spoken together.
Verses 5–7: “Under unseen attacks.”
The enemies are always planning harm and trying to take his life.
This part shows not only direct violence but also hidden pressure such as slander and watching.
Because of this, the writer’s fear grows stronger.
Verses 8–11: “God remembers the tears.”
The flow of the psalm changes here.
The writer says, “You have kept count of my wanderings.”
He realizes that God does not miss his suffering but remembers it fully.
From this confidence, he again declares, “I will not be afraid.”
Verses 12–13: “Taking one step from trust.”
The writer says, “I will fulfill my vows.”
It does not explain what the vow is.
But even in suffering, he made a vow to God, and now, before anything has changed, he decides to keep it.
He believes that God will help him keep his promise, and he prepares to give thanks.
What matters here is not asking for reward but choosing to live faithfully before God.
4. How to Read This Psalm
The center of this psalm is not that fear disappears.
It is about continuing to trust God in the middle of fear.
Verses 4 and 11 repeat similar words of trust, which strongly emphasize this point.
Verse 8 mentions “a bottle for tears,” which is often discussed.
This is not meant to be taken literally.
It is understood as an image that God does not forget even one part of our suffering.
The key point is not that God will reward us, but that He surely sees and remembers.
5. Message for Us Today
Your life is not something that simply flows and disappears.
We worry, feel restless, and sometimes do not know what to do.
There are moments when our hearts are shaken in ways no one else sees.
But God sees all of it.
So even in lonely pain, try to say in your heart, “Today also, I will trust in God,” and “I will offer thanks as I promised.”
This is the way of faith that Psalm 56 teaches us.
