Chapter 13 Abijah’s Faith

  1. Abijah’s Special Record in Chronicles

The son of Solomon, Rehoboam, was succeeded by his son Abijah. In 1 Kings 15 he appears under the name Abijam in Sinkaiyaku 2017, and his life is recorded in only eight verses. But Chronicles, at 22 verses, is more than double the length. And there are important differences. In the Book of Kings, Abijah is recorded as a sinful king. But Abijah of Chronicles is a man of faith. Also, in the Book of Kings, the episode of the war with Northern Israel, which is written out in just one verse, is described in detail. The point of this chapter is to think about what the author of Chronicles intended in the way he picked up Abijah and the episode about Abijah.

  1. Great Reversal of Faith

First of all, Abijah has 400,000 elites and is fighting against Jeroboam 800,000 elites who rebel against God and worship the golden calf. However, the difference in his power and strategy is obvious, and Abijah’s army is sandwiched between the front and back of Jeroboam’s army and falls into a desperate situation. However, at the last minute, when Abijah called out to the true God, God sided with Abijah and Jeroboam was defeated.

There are two notable points in this great plot twist for Abijah. One is the change in emphasis from repentance to trust. What the reader needed was a reconstruction of worship, not a reconstruction of worship rituals, but a reconstruction of worship life. Worshiping God rightly brings us to a God-centered life. In this sense, Abijah’s “war declaration” against northern Israel has become a “holy war declaration.”

  1. Chronicles’ evaluation of Abijah

Next, the evaluation of Abijah is different in Chronicles and Kings. In Kings, Abijah is portrayed as a sinful king who “does all the sins that his father ever committed” (15:3), but in Chronicles Abijah rather calls straight to God. A faithful king. Moreover, Abijah’s understanding of faith goes back to the very basics. So Abijah stands on the merits of the past. Abijah believed that God’s blessing was based on David’s covenant of salt, not on anything Abijah himself. It is like thinking that our blessing is based on the cross of Jesus Christ. In other words, even though we are wicked, we are blessed by God because of the eternal covenant in the blood of Christ (Hebrews 13:20). Readers at the time would have read that Abijah, even though he was a bad person, asked for the “covenant of salt.” The covenant of salt is that God said to David, “Your house and your kingdom will endure before me, your throne will be established forever” (2 Sam 7:16). Thing. And it was called the covenant of salt because it was eternal and unchanging (Numbers 18:19). The covenant that was once made with David is valid forever. Readers were taught to walk with that conviction. And this is in no way contradicted by what the Book of Kings says that Abijah was a bad king, but was preserved for David’s sake (15:4). In other words, it should be said that both the books of Kings and Chronicles have not changed their evaluation of Abijah so much, and it should be said that they are describing in detail what the books of Kings simply wrote “for David’s sake.”

Anyway, this is a very practical and important thing to say. The Bible always gives great comfort and encouragement to those who repent and humble themselves before God. you may be a sinner. But God’s blessing is not on you, but is still poured out by the eternal covenant in the blood of Christ. And you can always trust God to win the big twist. Readers at the time suffered various obstacles and were unable to proceed with their work. But if that were the case, the episode of the sinful king Abijah who confronted and defeated Jeroboam would have turned their hearts to God. I hope you have a good day today.
