今日の聖書箇所には、王国時代のイスラエルで生きた人々の名前がたくさん並んでいます。しかし、これは単なる歴史の記録ではありません。聖書を読むうえで大切なのは、「この書を最初に読んだ人たちが、どのように受け止めたのか」を考えることです。今の私たちには、当時の文化や時代背景が分かりにくい部分もあります。だからこそ、まず当時の人々にとってどんな意味があったのかを理解し、そのうえで、今日の私たちにどんなメッセージがあるのかを考える必要があるのです。
1．章の全体像：ダビデから捕囚帰還まで
まず、この章の構成を見てみましょう。
前半（1〜9節）に並んでいる名前はダビデの子どもたちのものです。ヘブロン時代に生まれた6人、バテ・シュア（バテ・シェバ）による4人、そしてエルサレム時代に生まれた9人。
次に（10〜16節）、ソロモンからユダ王国滅亡までの王たちの名前が続きます。ここには列王記との表記の違いや、写本上の誤りと考えられる箇所もあります。
最後に（17〜24節）、バビロン捕囚後の人々の名前です。ゼルバベルという名前が出てきますが、彼は帰還民のリーダーでした。この章は、ダビデからゼルバベルまで、神の計画が途切れなかったことを示しているのです。
2．重要なポイント：神の選びは恵みによる
ここで注目したいのは、ダビデの家族にまつわる現実です。長子アムノンによる近親者への過ち、三男アブシャロムの反逆、四男アドニヤの身を滅ぼす行動、そしてダビデ自身の多くの妻をめぐる問題など。正直、隠しておきたい不名誉な出来事ばかりです。それでも神は、この家系を選び続けました。なぜでしょうか？
その理由は明確です。神の選びの基準は、私たち人間の基準とはまったく違うからです。私たちは、優れた人や能力のある人を選ぶことが多いですが、神はそうではありません。神の選びは、すべて「恵み」によってなされます。
さらに、バビロン捕囚後のゼルバベルも、立派な指導者というより、弱さや限界を持つ人でした。しかし神は彼を用い、新しい礼拝共同体を導きました。この系図は、「神は弱い者を用い、強いとみなされる者を退ける」という、神の主権の表れです。
3．この系図が語る神学的メッセージ
歴代誌が書かれた時代、ゼルバベルは約4万2千人の民を導くリーダーでした。そのため、当時この書を読んだ人々は、まず自分たちのリーダーにまつわる歴史的な背景を知ることになったでしょう。ただし、この書が伝えたいのは、単なる「政治的な正当性」ではありません。むしろ、自分たちのルーツを知り、これからどのように生き、どんな社会を築くべきかを教えているのです。
特に重要なのは、新しいことを始める時、私たち人間なら一番優れた人たちを集めてチームを作ろうとしますが、神はそうではないという点です。神は、人間の価値基準や能力に頼らず、むしろ「新しいスタートにはふさわしくない」と思われる人をも選び出し、礼拝する民を造られるのです。これは、神の恵みの大きさを示しています。
まとめ
この系図を読むとき、ただ名前を追いかけるのではなく、その背後にある神の意図や思いを感じてみましょう。たとえ過去に失敗や挫折があったとしても、神はあなたを礼拝へと招いています。「自分には資格がない」と思う人こそ、神の恵みの対象です。

[Season 6] 1 Chronicles Chapter 3 – God’s Choice by Grace
Today’s Bible passage lists many names of people who lived in Israel during the kingdom period. But this is not just a historical record. When we read the Bible, it is important to ask: “How did the first readers understand this text?” For us today, the culture and background of that time can be hard to grasp. That is why we need to first understand what this meant for the people back then, and then think about what message it has for us today.
1. The Whole Picture: From David to the Return from Exile
Let’s look at the structure of this chapter.
The first part (verses 1–9) lists the names of David’s children: six born in Hebron, four by Bath-shua (Bathsheba), and nine born in Jerusalem.
Next (verses 10–16), we see the names of the kings from Solomon to the fall of Judah. Here, there are some differences compared to the book of Kings, and even some possible copyist errors.
Finally (verses 17–24), we find the names of people after the Babylonian exile. Zerubbabel appears here as the leader of the returnees. This chapter shows that God’s plan never stopped—from David to Zerubbabel.
2. Key Point: God’s Choice Is by Grace
Now, notice the reality behind David’s family. Amnon’s sin against his relative, Absalom’s rebellion, Adonijah’s destructive ambition, and David’s own problems with many wives. Honestly, these are shameful events. Yet God kept choosing this family. Why?
The reason is clear: God’s choice is completely different from human standards. We often choose the most talented or capable people. God does not. His choice is always by grace.
Even Zerubbabel, after the exile, was not a strong leader. He had weaknesses and limits. Still, God used him to lead a new worshiping community. This genealogy shows that God uses the weak and sets aside those who seem strong. It is a sign of His sovereignty.
3. The Theological Message of This Genealogy
When Chronicles was written, Zerubbabel was leading about 42,000 people. So, the first readers saw their leader’s historical background. But the purpose of this book was not political legitimacy. It was to remind the people of their roots and teach them how to live and build their society.
Here is the key: When we start something new, we choose the best people for the team. God does not. He does not depend on human standards or abilities. He even chooses those who seem “unfit” for a new beginning and makes them His worshiping people. This shows the greatness of God’s grace.
Summary
When you read this genealogy, do not just follow the names. Look for God’s purpose behind them. Even if you have failures or setbacks, God invites you to worship Him. If you think, “I am not qualified,” you are exactly the one God calls by His grace.
Please keep this message in your heart today: “God’s choice is by grace.” That is the most important truth in 1 Chronicles 3.
