2．本編の歴史的・文学的な背景
詩篇37篇は、詩篇第1巻に含まれる知恵の詩で、ヘブライ語のアルファベット順に沿ったアクロスティック形式で書かれています。心情を吐き出す嘆きの詩ではなく、人生の教訓をきちんと整理し、心に刻み込むための詩です。前の36篇が「悪い人の現実」を描いていたのに対し、37篇は「それにどう向き合うか」に焦点を当てています。また、25節からダビデの晩年の作と考えられており、個人的な経験を越えた普遍的な知恵として伝えられています。
3．詩篇37篇の内容の流れ
では、本篇の流れを見てまいりましょう。
1～11節「悪い人の繁栄に心を乱されてはいけない」 悪を行う者に腹を立てないように。彼らの繁栄は、すぐにしおれる草花のように一時的なものだと書かれています。むしろ、目には見えない神に心を向け、神の恵みをじっと待つよう勧めています。
12～20節「神は最後まで見ておられる」 今は悪い人が力強く見えても、神はその最期を知っている。彼らの力は失われ、正しい人は守られる、と伝えます。
21～26節「正しい人の歩みは支えられる」 正しい人ですべてがうまくいくわけではありません。神に信頼して歩もうとする人もつまずきますが、神が手を取ってその生涯を支えてくださると語られています。
27～33節「正義の道を歩み続けよ」 だから、目の前の状況に左右されず、神に従う正しい生き方から外れないようにしなさいと教えています。
34～40節：「最後には正しい者が解き放たれる」 神は最後に必ず正しい人に良いことをしてくださると語られています。神に身を寄せる者を、神は守ってくださるのです。
このように、詩篇37篇は同じ教訓を繰り返し言い換えながら、読者の心にしっかりと刻み込むように語られています。
4．詩篇37篇の読み方
この詩はよく「正しく生きれば必ず報われる」という因果応報の考え方で読まれがちです。しかし、文脈の強調点はそこではありません。この詩が語っているのは、結果や報いがなかなか現れない現実を前提としつつ、それでも神の時を信じて待つ生き方です。つまり、悪い人の繁栄に心を揺らしたり迷ったりする人たちへ、正しい方向を指し示すものです。「地を受け継ぐ」とは、必ず成功するという意味ではなく、神の秩序のもとで安心して生きられる場所が与えられる、という約束を表しています。
5．現代の私たちへのメッセージ
詩篇37篇は、世の中の矛盾に対して怒りや不安を感じてはいけない、と言っているのではありません。むしろ、その感情を否定するのではなく、人生の時間を神に委ねるように、と教えているのです。今日一日、誰かの成功や不正に心がざわついたときには、「今」だけで判断するのではなく、「最後」を神に委ねましょう。その一歩こそが、この詩の知恵に生きることです。では、また明日。

When we look at daily news or events around us, we sometimes feel that honest people are not always rewarded. It can seem that those who work sincerely gain less than those who act skillfully and get ahead more easily. When we face this kind of reality, a quiet frustration or uneasiness may begin to grow in our hearts. Psalm 37 speaks directly to this kind of feeling.
In a world where the wicked seem to succeed, how should people of faith live? David speaks as someone who has lived through many experiences, offering a steady and thoughtful answer to this question.
2. Historical and Literary Background
Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm found in Book 1 of the Psalms. It is written in an acrostic form, following the order of the Hebrew alphabet. Rather than expressing strong emotion like a lament, it carefully organizes life lessons and helps the reader remember them. While Psalm 36 describes the reality of evil people, Psalm 37 focuses on how to respond to that reality. From verse 25, it is often understood as written in David’s later years, and it speaks beyond personal experience as a form of lasting wisdom.
3. The Flow of Psalm 37
Now, let us look at how the psalm develops.
Verses 1–11: Do Not Be Troubled by the Success of the Wicked
The psalm begins by telling us not to become angry at those who do evil. Their success is described as something temporary, like grass that soon fades. Instead, we are encouraged to turn our hearts toward God, who cannot be seen, and to wait quietly for His grace.
Verses 12–20: God Sees the End
Even though the wicked may appear strong now, God knows how their story will end. Their power will not last, and those who live rightly will be protected. The psalm invites us to see beyond the present moment.
Verses 21–26: The Life of the Righteous Is Sustained
Being righteous does not mean everything goes well. Even those who trust God may stumble, but God holds their hand and sustains them through life. The focus is not on success, but on being supported.
Verses 27–33: Stay on the Path of Justice
Because of this, we are told not to be shaken by what we see around us. Instead, we should continue to live in a way that follows God, without turning away from what is right.
Verses 34–40: The Final Outcome Belongs to God
At the end, the psalm speaks of a final outcome. God will ultimately act for those who are righteous. Those who take refuge in Him will be protected. The emphasis is not on immediate results, but on what God brings about in the end.

4. How to Read This Psalm
This psalm is often read as teaching that if we live rightly, we will surely be rewarded. However, that is not the main point. The phrase “inherit the land” does not promise easy success. Instead, it points to a place where life can be lived securely under God’s order.
