2．ペリシテ人とはどんな人たちか？
ペリシテ人は、昔クレタ島からエジプトを経て、カナン地方の南西の海岸に住みついた民族です。時代は紀元前1200年から1050年ごろと考えられています。イスラエルがカナンに定着した後に現れたため、ヨシュア記には登場しません。彼らは鉄の武器を持ち（1サムエル記13:19-23）、組織だった軍隊もありました。そのため、イスラエルにとっては非常に手強い敵だったのです。
3．神の箱が奪われた理由とその意味
ペリシテ人はイスラエルとの戦いに勝ち、神の箱を戦利品として持ち帰りました。神の箱はイスラエルの信仰の中心であり、それを失うことは国全体の危機でもありました。ペリシテ人はその箱を自分たちの神殿に置き、イスラエルの神を自分たちの神々の一つとして扱おうとしました。彼らは多くの神を信じる「多神教」の信仰を持っており、これは日本の伝統的な考え方にも少し似ているかもしれません。
4．ダゴン神殿で起きた不思議な出来事
神の箱がペリシテの神ダゴンの神殿に置かれると、奇妙なことが起こります。ダゴンの像が倒れ、頭と腕が「敷居」の上に落ちてしまったのです。これは、ダゴンの像には力がなく、イスラエルの神の力が本物であることを示しています。ダゴンは「魚」や「穀物」を意味し、豊作を願うペリシテの主な神でしたが、その像が倒されたのです。つまり、人間の戦いを超えた、神々の力比べの結果が現れたということです。
5．ペリシテ人に起きた災い
さらに神の箱がアシュドデに運ばれると、町には疫病が広がりました。聖書には「死ななかった者は腫れ物で打たれ、助けを求める叫び声が天にまで上った」（12節）と書かれています。ギリシア語訳の聖書（七十人訳）では「ねずみが現れ、死と破滅が広がった」とも記されています。歴史家のヨセフォスは、ペストや赤痢が流行したのではないかと考えています。ペリシテ人は神の箱が原因だと気づき、箱を別の町へ移しましたが、どこへ行っても災いは止まりませんでした。こうして、ペリシテの神の限界が明らかになったのです。
6．神の箱が教えてくれること
この一連の出来事は、戦いが単なる民族間の争いではなく、イスラエルの神とペリシテの神々との力比べになったことを示しています。神の箱が運ばれる先々で災いが起こるため、ペリシテ人たちはイスラエルの神の力を認めざるを得ませんでした。しかし、彼らは災いの原因が神の箱であることは認めても、イスラエルの神を信じることはありませんでした。
7．信仰とは何かを考える
人は災いや苦しい目にあっても、それだけで神を信じるようにはなりません。むしろ、苦しい時には「神がいるなら、なぜこんな目にあうのか」と考えてしまいがちです。しかし、そうした時こそ、自分の考えにとらわれず、素直な心で物事を見つめることが大切です。試練は、新しい視点や可能性に気づくチャンスでもあります。そして、目に見えない神の存在を知るきっかけにもなるのです。「信仰」というと、苦しいときに助けてもらうためのものだと思う人もいるかもしれません。しかし、信仰はそれだけではありません。信仰を持つことで、人生の意味や、歴史の中で神がどのように働いてきたかを知ることができます。つまり、信仰は私たちの考え方や生き方を深めてくれるものなのです。
8．イエス・キリストとのつながり
旧約聖書では、神の箱が「神が共にいる」ことの象徴でした。一方、新約聖書では、イエス・キリストが「インマヌエル（神が共にいる）」として来られました。キリストは、神の箱よりもさらに深く、神の存在を人々に示した方です。そして、今も昔も変わらず、いつまでも私たちと共におられる方なのです。
9．現代へのメッセージ

2. Who Were the Philistines?
The Philistines were a strong people who came from Crete, passed through Egypt, and lived near the sea in Canaan.
They lived around 1200 to 1050 BC.
They did not appear in the Book of Joshua, so they came after Israel settled in Canaan.
They had iron weapons (1 Samuel 13:19–23) and strong armies.
For Israel, they were very dangerous enemies.

Dagon was a god of fish and grain, and people prayed to him for good harvests.
But now, it was clear that this was not just a human fight—it was a battle between gods.
5. Trouble in the Philistine Cities
After the Ark came to Ashdod, many people got sick.
The Bible says, “Those who did not die were struck with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven” (verse 12).
The Greek Bible (Septuagint) says rats appeared and brought death and destruction.
The historian Josephus thought it was a plague or dysentery.
The Philistines moved the Ark to other cities, but the trouble continued.
This showed that their gods had no power to stop the disaster.
6. What Does the Ark Teach Us?
This story is not just about war between nations.
It is about the power of Israel’s God compared to the Philistine gods.
Wherever the Ark went, disasters happened.
The Philistines had to admit that Israel’s God was powerful.
