1．ここに至るまでの積み重ねの長さを考える
私たちは、大きな節目を迎えたとき、「ここに至るまでには長い積み重ねがあったのだな」と気づかされることがあります。たとえば家族の記念日や教会の周年記念の「今」を祝うとき、その背後には何年にもわたる歩みや、人知れず支えてきた人々がいるのです。
ネヘミヤ記12章の城壁奉献式も、まさにそんな大切な瞬間でした。大きな礼拝として行われた城壁奉献式にも、実に緻密な準備と長い歴史の積み重ねがありました。名簿に並ぶ人々の名前は、世代にわたって「礼拝を守りつづけてきた人々」の証しとなっています。そして、奉献式の典礼は、共同体が「礼拝を中心に生きる」姿を鮮やかに映し出しています。
この12章を読むとき、私たち自身の教会生活を支える多くの人々や長い歩みに、自然と目が向くようになるでしょう。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的位置づけ
ネヘミヤ記12章は、「捕囚後の共同体における礼拝の秩序の整備」と「城壁奉献式」の二つの内容からできています。1～26節は、正統な祭司とレビ人の名簿で、27～47節には奉献式の記録があります。歴史の連続性と神の恵みから生まれる喜びが組み合わさり、この章の中心的なテーマを形作っています。
3．本章の構造
まず、1～26節では帰還初期（ヨシュア・ゼルバベル時代）からネヘミヤの時代まで続く祭司とレビ人の名簿が記されています。これは単なる記録ではなく、奉献式を担う祭司制度が歴史の中で正しく整えられてきた証拠ともいえるものです。
続く27～30節では、各地に散っていたレビ人たちが呼び集められ、祭司・レビ人・民、さらに城壁までも順に「きよめ」られます。礼拝を始めるための典礼的な準備が行われたのです。
31～42節には、城壁を巡る2つの賛美隊が登場します。一方はエズラに率いられて右回り、もう一方はネヘミヤと共に左回りで進み、左右対称に城壁を行進します。町を取り囲む城壁の上に感謝の歌声が響く光景は、エルサレム共同体の神への信仰と、彼らが神の民の都市であることを力強く表していました。
43節では「神が彼らを大いに喜ばせた」と記され、祝祭の喜びが頂点に達します。そして44～47節で、礼拝を保つための制度の整備によって締めくくられます。
4．オリジナルリーダーが読み取ったこと
当時の読者が最も深く受け止めたのは、「自分たちが喜びをささげた」ことではありません。「神ご自身が彼らを大いに喜ばせてくださった」という事実でした（12:43）。城壁の再建そのものよりも、神が約束どおり彼らをエルサレムに導き、礼拝を中心とする生活に立ち返らせてくださったという神のはたらきが、彼らの心を圧倒したのです。
背景には、1～26節に記された、「神が歴史を通して守り続けた正統な祭司制度」があります。奉献式に立ったのは、その場だけで集められた人ではなく、神が世代を超えて用意し、整えてきた祭司たちでした。ここには、イスラエルの歴史に深く関わってこられた神の確かな現実（リアリティ）があらわれています。
5．普遍的テーマと実際的適用
現代の私たちが注目すべきはそのポイントでしょう。礼拝共同体は人の努力や知恵だけで成り立つのではなく、何よりも神が歴史を導き、担い手を整えてくださることによってつくられる、という点です。
神が世代を超えて祭司やレビ人を守り、礼拝を担ってきた人々を整えてこられた。神が長い時をかけて今ある礼拝を備えられてきた。だからこそ「神が彼らに大きな喜びを与えられた」（12:43）という感動が、城壁の上で高らかに賛美されるのです。
現代の教会も同じです。私たち
の礼拝の背景には、多くの奉仕や支えがあるものの、それらは神が教会を導き、担い手を備え、共同体を築いてこられた賜物です。もちろん、ひとりひとりの奉仕も大切です。どんな小さなことでも、神はそれを受け入れてくださり、忠実に仕える者を祝福し、用いてくださいます。そのことを心に留めるとき、私たちは自分の奉仕に感謝と敬意を持って取り組み、教会の健全な礼拝共同体を支えあう心へと導かれていくのです。
6．感謝をもって礼拝をささげましょう
ネヘミヤ記12章の喜びの頂点は、神が歴史の中で共同体を整え、ついに大きな喜びを与えてくださったという、神の主導的な働きにありました（12:43）。
今の私たちも、礼拝共同体がここまで導かれてきた背後にある神の変わらぬ導きと祝福を覚えながら、感謝をもって礼拝をささげ続けていきましょう。ではまた明日。

1. Think about the long build-up that led to this moment
When we reach an important milestone, we often realize how long the journey has been. For example, when we celebrate a family anniversary or a church anniversary, we remember that many years of walking together and many unseen supporters stand behind the “today” we are celebrating.
The dedication of the wall in Nehemiah chapter 12 was exactly such a moment. This great worship celebration was not sudden. It was built on careful preparation and a long history. The names listed in the records are a testimony to people who kept worship alive across generations. The order of the dedication ceremony clearly shows a community that chose to live with worship at its center.
As we read this chapter, our eyes are naturally opened to the many people and the long journey that support our own church life today.
2. Historical and literary position of this chapter
Nehemiah chapter 12 has two main parts: the organization of worship order in the post-exile community, and the dedication of the wall. Verses 1–26 list the legitimate priests and Levites, and verses 27–47 record the dedication ceremony. The continuity of history and the joy born from God’s grace come together to shape the main theme of this chapter.
3. Structure of the chapter
First, verses 1–26 describe the lists of priests and Levites from the early return period (the time of Jeshua and Zerubbabel) to the time of Nehemiah. This is not just a record of names. It shows that the priestly system that supported the dedication was properly formed through history.
Next, in verses 27–30, the Levites who were scattered in various places are gathered. The priests, Levites, the people, and even the wall itself are purified in order. This was the liturgical preparation needed to begin worship.
Verses 31–42 describe two choirs of thanksgiving walking on the wall. One group, led by Ezra, goes to the right, and the other, with Nehemiah, goes to the left. They move in a balanced way around the city. Songs of thanks echo on the wall surrounding Jerusalem, powerfully expressing the faith of the community and their identity as God’s people.
In verse 43, it is written that “God made them rejoice with great joy,” and the celebration reaches its peak. Finally, verses 44–47 close the chapter with the establishment of systems to maintain worship.
4. What the original readers understood
What touched the original readers most deeply was not that “they offered joy,” but that “God Himself made them rejoice greatly” (12:43). More than the rebuilding of the wall, they were overwhelmed by God’s work: He led them back to Jerusalem as promised and restored a life centered on worship.
Behind this stands the reality shown in verses 1–26: God preserved the legitimate priestly system throughout history. The priests who stood at the dedication were not chosen only for that day. They were prepared and sustained by God across generations. Here we see the strong reality of a God who has been deeply involved in Israel’s history.
5. Universal themes and practical application
This is the key point for us today. A worshiping community is not built only by human effort or wisdom. Above all, it is formed because God leads history and prepares those who serve.
God protected priests and Levites across generations and prepared those who carried worship. God spent a long time preparing the worship we have today. That is why the joy described in “God gave them great joy” (12:43) was sung loudly on the wall.
The same is true for the church today. Behind our worship are many acts of service and support, but all of them are gifts from God, who has guided the church, prepared its workers, and built the community. Of course, each person’s service is important. Even small acts are accepted by God. He blesses faithful servants and uses them. When we remember this, we are led to serve with gratitude and respect, supporting a healthy worshiping community together.
6. Let us offer worship with thanksgiving
The peak of joy in Nehemiah chapter 12 is found in God’s leading work. God prepared the community through history and finally gave them great joy (12:43). As we worship today, let us remember God’s unchanging guidance and blessing that have brought our worshiping community to this point. Let us continue to offer worship with thankful hearts.
