1．リベカを巡る試練（26:1-13）
アブラハムの子イサクは、裕福な家に生まれ、平穏無事な毎日を暮らしている、誰もがそう思ったことでしょう。しかし、人の人生などわからないものです。イサクの住む土地に飢饉が生じ、イサクもまたその影響を受けるのです。彼は、父のアブラハムがそうしたように、一時エジプトへ退避し、この飢饉を逃れようとしました。その意味するところは、彼はそれほど、蓄えもなく、裕福でもなかった、飢饉が生じたら生活できる場所を求めて移動せざるを得ない程度の生活であった、ということです。息子のヤコブの代には、飢饉があっても移動しなくてもよかったことを考えると、その生活レベルがわかるでしょう。
そんなイサクに神は、ゲラルの地に住み、エジプトへは向かわないようにと命じられるのです。そしてアブラハムに約束された契約のことばを繰り返されました。神のみこころは、イサクが約束の地から離れてはならない、ということでした。
ところが、そのゲラルで彼は事件に巻き込まれるのです。土地の人々は、イサクの美しい妻に興味を抱きました。イサクは、危険を回避するため、父同様に、リベカを自分の妹と偽るのです。しかしそれが発覚し、ゲラルの王、アビメレクの配慮により、イサクは守られることになりました。
一読、父アブラハムのエピソードを思い起こすことです。しかも名前が同じアビメレク。そこでこの点については、様々な議論があり、これはイサクのものではなく、アブラハムの重複記事の一つだと考える人もいれば、イサクの記事として考え、このアビメレクを先のアビメレクの息子だったと考える人もいます。
問題は、事実のエピソードだとした場合、なぜこのようなエピソードが挿入されたかです。注目すべきは、13節です。このエピソードの後、イサクは、農耕を始め、経済的に豊かになっているのです。「この人は富み、ますます栄えて、非常に裕福になった」とその豊かさは、三度強調されています。約束の土地が確実に彼のものとなっていくのです。
2．井戸を巡る試練（26:14-35）
そして、井戸を巡って、アビメレクとの盟約により、彼は自分の土地の所有の境界を定めるに至りました。日本では、日本の全土を表現するのに、北海道から沖縄までというがあります。それに相当するイスラエルでの言い方は、ダンからベエル・シェバまでです。こうして、アブラハムに対する神の約束がアブラハムの死後も生き続け、イサクの代に南の境界、ベエル・シェバが意識され、具体的に形になっていく様が描かれています。
大切なのは、こうした神の約束が実現し、具体な形になっていく状況は、イサクの努力とは別のところで起こっていることでしょう。イサクは、ペリシテ人に嫌がらせを受け、この地域で生きていくには大切な井戸を奪われる事件に巻き込まれます。そのような状況に対するイサクのあり方は、軟弱で、逃げ腰です。衝突が起こればその場所を去り、別の地に自分の居を構え新しいスタートを切ります。そして、父アブラハムの神、主の名を呼び求めて、これに期待を寄せているのです。
こんなことで、神の尊い計画が実現できるのか？普通は、こんな人間は社会では相手にされないのです。その要領の悪さと軟弱な姿勢に付け込まれて、奪われてポイ捨てです。しかしそれでも神のアブラハムに対する約束は、変わらないのです。逃げていくイサクを祝福が追いかけていく形です。そして、奪われるにいいだけ、いじめられるにいいだけという状況にあったイサクを、アビメレクは見ていて、イサクの人生に注がれる神の祝福を知り、アビメレク自らイサクと和解しようとやってくるのです。考えられない力の逆転が生じています。
大切なのは、神を信じる者の人生には、万物の根源であり、祝福の源であるその神の配慮があるということでしょう。「柔よく剛を制す」ではありませんが、しなやかに、妨げのある時にはその妨げを避けて流れるように人生を生き、溜水のように動きを留められるのなら、そのまま静かに時を過ごすように人生を生きていく。何か不本意と思われるようなことがあっても、そこで抗ったりせずに、疑問を小脇に抱えて、神の善であることを信頼し、押し出されるままに生きていく。そうすれば、取り戻される者は取り戻され、新たに祝福されるものは祝福される、とこれらのエピソードは語っているようにも思います。神と共に生きるというのは、立派な人生を歩むことではありません。正しい人生を生きることは当たり前です。むしろ、流水のごとく、人生の自然の流れに沿いながら生きていくこと、人の悪意や妬みにさらされても恐れないことです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネルの登録、メンバーの登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日、このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Genesis 26: Isaac’s trials.
- the trials over Ribekah (26:1-13)
Everyone would have thought that Isaac, the son of Abraham, was born into a wealthy family and lived a life of peace and tranquillity. However, one never knows what life will be like. When a famine strikes the land where Isaac lives, he too is affected. He tried to escape the famine by fleeing to Egypt for a time, just as his father Abraham had done. The implication is that he was not so well-off or well-stocked that he had to move to a place where he could live when the famine hit. Considering that by the time of his son Jacob, he did not have to move in the event of a famine, you can see the level of his living.
God commands Isaac to live in the land of Gerar and not to go to Egypt. He then repeated the words of the covenant promised to Abraham. God’s will was that Isaac should not leave the Promised Land.
However, in Gerar he was involved in an incident. The people of the land were interested in Isaac’s beautiful wife. Isaac, like his father, pretends that Ribekah is his sister in order to avoid danger. However, this is discovered and Isaac is protected by the care of Abimelech, king of Gerar.
One reading is to recall the episode of his father Abraham. Moreover, the name is the same Abimelech. So there is a lot of debate on this point, some people think that this is one of the duplicate articles of Abraham, not of Isaac, while others consider it as an article of Isaac and think that this Abimelech was the son of the earlier Abimelech.
The question is, if it is a factual episode, why was it inserted? It is worth noting verse 13. After this episode, Isaac begins to farm and becomes financially prosperous. His wealth is emphasised three times: ‘This man became rich and became more and more prosperous and very wealthy.’ The promised land is surely becoming his. - trials over the wells (26:14-35)
And the pact with Abimelech over the wells led him to define the boundaries of his land ownership. In Japan, there is a Japanese way of describing the whole of Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. The equivalent in Israel is from Dan to Beersheba. Thus, God’s promise to Abraham lived on after his death, and the southern boundary, Be’er Sheva, was recognised and concretely shaped in Isaac’s generation.
Importantly, these circumstances in which God’s promises are fulfilled and take concrete form are probably occurring apart from Isaac’s efforts. Isaac is involved in an incident where he is harassed by the Philistines and deprived of a well, which is important for life in the area. Isaac’s attitude to such situations is soft and flippant. If a conflict arises, he leaves the place, takes up his residence in another place and makes a new start. And he is looking forward to this, calling on the name of the Lord, the God of his father Abraham.
How can God’s precious plan be realised in this way? Normally, people like this are not taken seriously in society. They are taken advantage of for their ineptitude and soft attitude, and are robbed and discarded. Yet God’s promise to Abraham remains the same. The blessing follows Isaac as he runs away. And Abimelech sees Isaac in a situation where he is only good for being robbed and bullied, and knowing God’s blessing poured out on Isaac’s life, Abimelech himself comes to be reconciled with Isaac. An unthinkable reversal of power has occurred.
What is important is that the life of a believer in God has the care of that God who is the source of all things and the source of blessing. If you are able to stay in motion like a pool of water, then you should live your life as if you were quietly passing the time. If something seems unwanted, don’t fight it, but live your life as it is pushed out, holding your doubts aside, trusting in God’s goodness. Then those who are taken back will be taken back, and those who are blessed anew will be blessed, these episodes seem to tell us. Living with God is not about living a respectable life. Living a righteous life is a given. Rather, it is about living like running water, following the natural course of life, and not being afraid to be exposed to the malice and envy of others.
