1． ヤコブの人生の総括（47:1-27）
エジプトに住み始めたヤコブが、ファラオと会見します。ヤコブは、ファラオの質問に答えて言います。自分の人生には「いろいろなわざわいがあり」と。確かに、ヤコブの人生を振り返ってみれば、兄エサウを騙す羽目になって、家を離れ（27章）、助けを求めたラバンに騙され、望みもしない4人の妻を得て、妻の争いに苦しめられ（30章）、20年の搾取とハラスメントを受けた労働の日々を過ごしました（29-31章）。また、息子、娘たちの浅はかな行動によって、定住するために買い取ったシェケムの地を追われ（34章）、最愛の妻ラケルを失い（35章）、さらに妻ラケルの形見のように大切にしたヨセフを失い（37章）、老いた晩年に、さらに愛妻ラケルのもう一つの形見であるベニヤミンさえ失う覚悟を決めさせられた（42章）歩みでした。それは、いろいろなわざわいの記憶に圧倒されそうな人生でした。
しかし、実際には、ヤコブは、様々な苦難の中で、自分とともにおられる神を肌身で感じて来たのです。彼は、家を出た後に、まことの神と出会い、べテルに祭壇を築きました（28章）。そしてラバンに搾取された20年の最後には、「神は私の苦しみとこの手の労苦を顧みられ、昨夜さばきをなさったのです」（31:42）と、神が正しいことを行う方であることを認めています。さらにシェケムでカナン人とペリジ人に憎まれ、その土地にいられなくなった時には、神の守りを体験しています。
だからこそ、最愛の妻ラケルが死に臨んで、ラケルが生まれてくるわが子を「ベン・オニ（悲しみの子）」と呼んだ際に、ヤコブは、その名を「ベニヤミン（我が右手の子）」と積極的に読み替えることもできたのでしょう。そして、ベニヤミンのエジプト行きについても「全能の神」（43:14節）にすべてをゆだねる気丈な心を持つに至ったと言えます。
自らの人生を振り返り、様々な苦難に満ちている、と思うことはあるものです。しかし、神を知る人生が、世間的に見て幸せであるとは限らないのです。キリスト者の人生は綺麗ごとではありません。けれども、神がその苦難を乗り越える力を与えてくださることも事実なのです。ヤコブの生涯はその明確な証拠です。様々な痛みや破れがある現実の中で、生き抜かなくてはならない人間に、人生の最期まで、望みを手放してはならない、と励まし、支えて、共に歩む神を覚えることが大切なのです（イザヤ43:1-2）。
ヤコブは、ファラオを二度祝福しています。一介の地方の農夫が、偉大なエジプトの国の王ファラオに祝福を語るのです。それは、この私が、米国の大統領、あるいはロシアの大統領に対面して、祝福する実に大それた行為に違いありません。しかし、ヤコブにとっては、大それたことではない、当たり前のことなのです。エジプトの王ファラオに遥かに優る天地創造の神の祝福を伝えるのですから。そして、それが、神のみこころだからです。神を信じる者は皆、このような大胆な心に生き、神を信じる信じないを問わず、すべての人に、祝福を告げることができる者なのです。神はあらゆる人々への慈愛に満ちています。
2．ヨセフの飢饉への対応（47:13-31）
さて、ヨセフが飢饉に際して、どのように対処したのかに注目しましょう。ヨセフは、ただ人々を難局から切り抜けさせるのみならず（17節）、土地と交換に食料を与え、五分の一税を課しました。土地はファラオの所有となり、その住民はファラオの借地人となりました。確かにヒクソス王朝以降、エジプトでは土地その他の財産の集中的な国有化が進んだと言われます。20％という税率は、40～60％にさえ達し得る古代社会の税率に比較すると、十分国民の生活に配慮したものです。
こうしてヨセフは、税制を整え、エジプトの将来を築く、国の構造改革を成し遂げていきます。それは、まさにヤコブと同じで、天地万物を支配し、夢を解き明かす神と共にあればこそ、できた大胆な発想と行動であったのでしょう。どんな事態にあっても、もう終わりだとは考えず、これは、プロセスである、よりよい変化へのチャンスとしてとらえ、前に進んでいく。これが神を信じる者の強みです。信仰者であればこそ持ちうるしたたかさを大事にし、人類の祝福された未来をリードする者でありたいものです。

Genesis 47 Joseph’s Policy
- Summary of Jacob’s Life (47:1-27)
After Jacob began living in Egypt, he met with Pharaoh. In response to Pharaoh’s question, Jacob said, “I have had many troubles in my life.” Indeed, looking back at Jacob’s life, he ended up deceiving his brother Esau and left his home (chapter 27), was deceived by Laban when he asked for help, had four wives he did not want, suffered from their quarrels (chapter 30), and spent 20 years of exploited and harassed work (chapters 29-31). Furthermore, because of the foolish actions of his sons and daughters, he was driven out of the land of Shechem that he had purchased to settle down (chap. 34), lost his beloved wife Rachel (chap. 35), and then lost Joseph, whom he cherished as a memento of his wife Rachel (chap. 37). In his old age, he was forced to prepare to lose even Benjamin, another memento of his beloved wife Rachel (chap. 42). It was a life that could have been overwhelming with memories of various calamities. However, in reality, Jacob felt firsthand that God was with him, even in the midst of all his hardships. After leaving home, he met the true God and built an altar at Bethel (chap. 28). And at the end of 20 years of being exploited by Laban, he acknowledged that God is righteous, saying, “God has looked upon my affliction and the toil of my hands, and has judged me last night” (31:42). Furthermore, when Jacob was hated by the Canaanites and the Perizzites in Shechem and could no longer live there, he experienced God’s protection.
That is why, when his beloved wife Rachel was near death and called her newborn son “Ben-oni” (son of sorrow), Jacob was able to positively interpret the name as “Benjamin” (son of my right hand). And when it came to Benjamin’s departure to Egypt, Jacob had the fortitude to entrust everything to “God Almighty” (43:14).
We often look back on our own lives and think that they are full of various hardships. However, a life that knows God is not necessarily a happy one in the eyes of the world. The life of a Christian is not pretty. However, it is also true that God gives us the strength to overcome those hardships. Jacob’s life is clear evidence of this. It is important for people who must survive in a reality filled with various pains and brokenness to remember that God encourages, supports, and walks with them, telling them not to give up hope until the very end of their lives (Isaiah 43:1-2).
Jacob blesses Pharaoh twice. A simple local farmer speaks a blessing to Pharaoh, the king of the great nation of Egypt. For me to bless the president of the United States or the president of Russia face to face must be a very bold act. However, for Jacob, it was not a big deal, it was just a natural thing. He was conveying the blessing of the God who created heaven and earth, who is far superior to the king of Egypt, Pharaoh. And this is because it is God’s will. All those who believe in God can live with such a bold heart and pronounce a blessing on all people, whether they believe in God or not. God is full of mercy towards all people.
- Joseph’s response to the famine (47:13-31)
Now, let us look at how Joseph responded to the famine. Joseph not only helped the people out of their predicament (verse 17). He also provided food in exchange for land. Additionally, a one-fifth tax was imposed. The land became the property of Pharaoh, and its inhabitants became his tenants. It is said that after the Hyksos dynasty, Egypt saw the intensive nationalization of land and other assets. Compared to the tax rates of ancient societies, which could reach 40-60%, the 20% tax rate was a sufficient consideration for the lives of the people.
In this way, Joseph established a tax system and accomplished structural reform of the country, building the future of Egypt. Just like Jacob, it was a bold idea and action that was possible only with God, who rules over all things in heaven and earth and interprets dreams. Whatever the situation, do not think that it is the end, but see it as a process, an opportunity for better change, and move forward. This is the strength of those who believe in God. We should treasure the shrewdness that only believers can have, and be those who lead the way to a blessed future for humanity.
