Season 6: 1 Chronicles 15 – Moving Toward the Heart of Worship
This chapter shows King David carrying the Ark of the Covenant again. It is not just a historical record. It tells us what David learned from his failure and how he changed his attitude and actions. This gives us important hints for thinking about our relationship with God and the meaning of worship.
1. Let’s Look at the Structure of the Chapter
The chapter has four main parts:
- Part 1 (verses 1–3): Preparation and Gathering – David sets up a new tent and calls the leaders of Israel.
- Part 2 (verses 4–10): List of Levites – The names of those who serve in worship are written in detail.
- Part 3 (verses 11–15): Command for Holiness and Carrying – David orders that the Ark be carried in the right way, according to the Law.
- Part 4 (verses 16–29): Music and Procession – A joyful parade with instruments, singing, and shouts.
And then, the contrasting scene with Michal.
Chronicles tells the same event as Samuel, but it focuses more on David as a leader, the order of worship, and the unity of the people. It speaks to those who returned from Babylon: “Let’s rebuild worship again!”
3. Learning from Failure – David’s Change
The first time David moved the Ark, he ignored the Law and used a cart. He failed. This time, he told the Levites to carry it on their shoulders, as God commanded (verse 2; 2 Samuel 6:3,13). David admitted his mistake and went back to God’s Word in Numbers and Deuteronomy.
The detailed lists of Levites (verses 4–10, 16–24) are not random. The writer wants to show that worship is a community work. David is pictured as a leader who guides the people, like Moses did. The message is clear: “Return to the heart of worship.” David was not perfect, but he tried to follow God’s Word. We also are not perfect, but we can serve God by following His Word.
4. The Heart of Worship – A Message for Today
This chapter teaches four key points:
- Holiness – Worship is not something extra. We must set apart time and heart (verse 12).
- Order – Follow God’s Word. David learned from failure and returned to the Law (verse 15).
- Joy – Worship needs active praise, with heart and voice (verse 16).
- Community – Worship is not only personal. All Israel gave glory to God together (verse 28).
Michal’s cold look (verse 29) warns us not to make worship just an empty form.
